    I'm much more comfortable throwing straight discs straight for straight shots than hyzerflips, generally when I try to hyzerflip I put too much angle and/or throw them way up in the air. Throwing high speed drivers on hyzer angle to get that long glidey hyzer turn works pretty decently for me though.

    I find that when throwing a hyzer flip with something that would normally turn and burn, to prevent the burn and get a nice straight hyzer flip u simply throw the disc as a touch shot hyzer flip. You'll see a lot of pros do this with a forehand flick when they dont have a whole lot of room to throw in order to get outta trouble👍

    There's no definitive angle for EVERY disc. It all depends on the stability of the disc (it's original flight path and how well it has been beat in). If you are throwing a SUPER flippy disc, you can throw it with more hyzer angle. A more stable discs will require less hyzer angle. It all depends on the type of shot you need and the disc you are throwing; hence, why I can't tell you the exact angle you need to throw. Hope that makes sense!

  • @GladiatorDiscGolf

    It can certainly help depending on the stability of the disc. A really US disc will turn into a roller when thrown flat, so to get more air distance, you would have to throw it on hyzer so it flips up and glides.

    I’m still a noobie- playing 2months- and trying make sense of of the relationship of each rating plus disc weight. When you say use a disc with more turn, like -2 or -3, is that an absolute or is it relative to speed and/or glide? For instance, if I want a hyzer flip mid and a hyzer flip driver, will they both be -3 turn even though one is 5 speed and one is 11 speed. Hope that makes sense. Seems like one has to buy a lot of disc to try to get the right ones.

  • @GladiatorDiscGolf

    @GladiatorDiscGolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question! There is a lot of confusion about this stuff. I promise you will learn it. It is easier to hyzerflip a midrange than a driver because of the slower speed. The speed of a disc is relative to the power you need to throw it. An 11 speed will fly much faster than a 5 speed, but it needs significantly more power to get it up to speed. Since you are brand new to the sport, I would recommend not throwing anything faster than a 7 speed for the first few months. Really learn how to throw putters and mids on all angles. Eventually, you will be able to throw faster discs and will be able to hyzerflip an 11 speed.

  • @filipcza

    @filipcza

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's all about relationship between 3 variables: 1. How fast you throw the disc - More speed you put into the throw, the more the disc will turn over. 2. How understable the disc is - More understable, the easier it will turn over. 3. How much hyzer angel you use. So regardless of the disc, you have to balance these 3 things just right to get the disc to flip up and fly straight. So this basically means that you just have to try different discs so that you will find the right combination and then everything just "clicks". When it does click, you will get the most beautiful and very useful tool to this game.

  • @GladiatorDiscGolf

    @GladiatorDiscGolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question. If you are in the woods and have to throw through a tunnel, I would still lean on the hyzerflip. With a headwind, you could probably get away with hyzering a more OS stable disc than normal since the headwind is going to make it flip up more. In a tailwind, I would hyzer a more US disc than normal since the tailwind is going to make the disc fly more stable than normal. In this second situation, the US disc would counteract the tailwind and ideally you would still have a straight shot. Now, this is all in a perfect world where a golfer knows his or her discs super well and perfectly executes the shot. Remember, the purpose of the hyzerflip is to throw a straight shot with little lateral movement. Therefore, the disc choice should reflect any wind change.

The katana seems to be the easiest to get a long way. Not sure I can hyzer flip any of those but as a long time ultimate player it is interesting to see how differently discs can fly. What situations would the boss be useful in that line up? I guess just knifing high hyzers that stab into the ground?

  • @GladiatorDiscGolf

    @GladiatorDiscGolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question! Initially, I have to ask how far you can throw each of those discs. Distance drivers should go at least 350' if a player is throwing them off the tee (in my opinion). If a golfer can't get a distance driver to go that far, then they don't really have the arm for it. Once again, this is just my opinion. This relates to hyzer flipping a disc because you need to be able to get a distance driver up to speed in order to make it fly its intended path, let alone hyzerflip. If you have a wraith and destroyer already in the bag, I don't really see a reason to have a boss as well. You can easily manipulate the wraith and destroyer to fly like the boss probably does by simply throwing it on hyzer.

    Carl Williams a lighter weight disc goes out of your hand with more speed so it turns more. It’s the same as throwing into a head wind or throwing downhill. The speed of the disc relative to the air is what matters. And all things equal, a lighter disc goes out faster.

  • @Ozzys29

    @Ozzys29

    Carl Williams generally the lighter weight discs will play more understable than the rating of a traditional weight disc. So when doing a Hyzer flip with a blizzard Destroyer (light weight) as compared to a star or champion destroyer, you would need to put more angle (Hyzer) on the release for them to replicate the same shot. When both thrown on the same angle the lighter weight disc will want to turn over more and glide a little more assuming there’s not any wind

    @@GladiatorDiscGolf thats not true, I play advanced and I hyzerflip shrykes to about 425 with minimal effort. Are there times when hyzerflipping a disc in an open area is useful, yes. Where there is a headwind, throwing a hyzerflip is a great idea! However, hyzerflips make a disc more stable. That’s why you use US discs for them. The hyzer and the turn counteract each other to fly straight. An s-curve flight path will go further than a straight flight path. All disc golfers need the turn in a disc to get max distance. If you’re throwing for max distance and you hyzerflip a disc, you are cancelling out some, if not all, of the turn. That’s counterintuitive. When all the pros were doing the max distance challenge during quarantine, not a single one of them threw their discs on hyzer. Garrett Gurthie was throwing katanas way up high and letting them turn and glide.

  • @ffsrekt

    @ffsrekt

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@GladiatorDiscGolf high and letting the turn counteract the stall is literally the exact same principal regarding aerodynamics as throwing a hyzerflip for distance. Every single pro throws their discs on hyzer out of their hand for distance. All of their longest bombs are hyzerflips or high stall turnovers to counteract the turn. Throwing a disc on a hyzer flip does not make the disc more stable. You can't alter the stability of a disc. Its either stable or not. The fact is that any beginner throwing an understable disc on a hyzer flip to turnover line for a full s curve will get more distance than if they threw an understable, straight, or overstable disc on a flat line.

  • @GladiatorDiscGolf

    @GladiatorDiscGolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question! When throwing a hyzerflip, you are making a disc fly more overstable than it normally does. That’s why you want to use a flippy disc. The turn will balance out the hyzer and the disc will then fly straight. It’s for this reason that you wouldn’t normally throw a hyzerflip in an open field. For maximum distance, you want the disc to do an S-Curve. That’s why so many distance drivers turn and then fade. It provides maximum distance. For example, a destroyer thrown flat will fly further than a destroyer on a hyzer when the same person throws both shots. The hyzerflip provides more accuracy in wooded courses and sacrifices some distance, where as on the open fields where accuracy is not as important, you can really rip a disc on a flat line to get maximum distance.

  • @kimmomatikainen1843

    @@GladiatorDiscGolf This is incorrect. If you look at any distance competitions or one mile challenges, you can see that Simon, Oskari, Thomas G etc throws hyzer flips. Hyzer shot starts from lower so you get more big muscles working in on a hyzer angle. Quite many players throws their long distance throws on open hole as a hyzerflip, but most prefers flex shots. It is just that flex shots are thrown with overstable discs so they are more dependable. You can depend on the fade even in windy conditions. You can see in distance competitions that quite often throws fail, especially in wind, because understable discs don't forgive wrong angles. Hyzerflip flight is an S-line. It starts as a hyzer and then turns over and fades at the end. Hyzerflip doesn't mean that there is no fade at the end. In the woods hyzerflip is used, because with control it flips to flat and flies straight. Hyzerflip can have a straight flight, it can have an S-flight and it can have all anhyzer flight depending on how understable disc you use. You can check e.g. distance competition LVC (Oskari Vikström vs. Thomas Gilbert) and Simon's 1 mile challenge.

    The degree of hyzer necessary depends on the turn of the disc, how beat in it is, and the golfer's arm speed. Also, if you throw a disc with too much hyzer, you defeat the purpose of a hyzerflip. That's why it is important to learn a disc and throw it on different degrees of hyzer to find the right angle to counterbalance the turn.

    hyzerflip does not mean "flip over". That's a turn over, or flex.

    I’m on older guy, been playing a lot for ten years or so, still can’t throw all that far, or do all the cool shots you guys are talking about though. Some stuff is starting to click, I probably need more understable discs. I think I can kinda do this with a lighter Valkyrie. Last night I threw one 20% farther than ever. I love this sport, and like to watch all sorts of technique videos when Im not throwing. 😀 Thanks for your help, good channel.

    @@Ketoswammy You should do some testing with lower weights.. or as you said more understable discs. I love throwing stable to overstable discs below 170grams!

    Hodnisguitar - Sounds good, thanks. Yeah, my bag still only has two lighter weight disc-the Valkyrie I mentioned is just 158g- and they are definitely my favorites. They seem to be a bit harder to find, I need to break down and order a bunch online. I really didn’t pay much attention to the disc weight before. Discs are so unique bc it’s not just the mold, but plastic, weight, and wear.

    I disagree. I explained that to throw a hyzerflip, you need to throw a flippy disc on hyzer because the turn of the disc will make it flip up to flat.

    @@GladiatorDiscGolf what is a hyzer angle? Do you hold it different, is it wrist angle or release point? I saw you mentioned you change angles with your torso... What does that look like? Slow motion or just an exaggerated slow walk through would be helpful.

    @@lisafoxlove Sorry for the delay! To answer your question here, yes, you do hold the disc on a different angle. When throwing a hyzer, the outside of the disc (the part of the rim furthest from you) is pointed towards the ground. The best way to change this angle and consistently control it is to lean forward/bend at your waist. If you notice in my slow motion clips at the end of the video, I am leaning slightly forward on each throw. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions!
