How to Think Like an Offshore Bass Fisherman

Спорт

Offshore bass fishing can seem impossible for new bass fisherman because you can’t see what you’re casting at in the middle of the lake. Well what if I told you offshore bass fishing and fishing down the bank are exactly the same thing and if you’re good at fishing shallow water, you can become a great offshore angler in no time! Don’t believe me? Well then watch this video and let me try to change this perspective on offshore fishing forever! This is a pretty long video and you need to watch it all for it to make sense. So buckle up and grab a snack because this video is worth it!

Man, you really break this stuff down to basics. I can see I've been too "Willy nilly" in my fishing and have been wasting too much time on non-active spots. Gotta get more regimented in my approach and more disciplined it seems if I'm to take advantage of the 'laws of nature'. Thank you sir for breaking this down like this.

I love that you describe a game plan for attacking offshore fishing. When the lake is crowded with a lot of fishing pressure, it would be nice to have an offshore milk run. Instead of fishing docks behind everyone else. Thanks so much for your videos.

Start a new tournament series with NO electronics and watch the pros beat the bank😁 I use your google earth and navi tips and get close with my phone gps then drag a carolina rig, or u rig till something picks it up. There are many great guidelines in bass fishing but the more I learn the more I realize it's a guessing game. Get good electronics, fish good lakes (more than once to make logs), use good gear , make no mistakes and put it all together and maybe you'll win a tournament. Thanks Jonny👍

Thanks for breaking this down in an understandable way. I’m a lifetime fisherman but am just getting into off shore fishing for bass. I appreciate you hitting us with the realities and probabilities of it all. I’ve watched countless other videos in my attempt to learn and many give the impression that if you find the fish you’ll catch them providing you find the right presentation. I have found, like you said, that this is rarely the case. Just like anything else in life, gotta put in the time and effort to be rewarded.

Thanks a lot, Jonny. You opened up my mind about offshore fishing. Finally risked it, (nobody here to answer my questions, but online had all the answers), and invested on high-tech electronics and studied hard online, on how to interpret them, and was excited to see millions of shad while at lake. Later I upgraded to GPS trolling motor, to hold boat on same spot, but when I would fish a couple of spots, and zero strikes, I would get discouraged and go back to bank fishing, feeling that I just wasn’t cut out for offshore fishing. But now that you explained about fishing same spots at different times, I feel more encouraged to invest more time to offshore fishing. The example of; 8 spots fishing them 3 times, and hitting 5th or 10th spot at right time makes sense to me. While still bank fishing, I hadn’t given up on offshore fishing. I felt like I needed a key, to open the door for me to get back into the offshore game… If you get a chance to dedicate a video on desert lakes, we would love it. I moved from Arizona to New Mexico, and brush piles, laydowns, dock fishing are practically non-existent. Being deep irrigation lakes, they fluctuate 50 feet or more annually. But we have millions of fishermen at these lakes.

Jonny, all of your KZread videos have the best quality information available anywhere on how to actually catch fish. Theh best I've found. The very excellent Tacticalbassin focuses more on equipment and how to properly fish the gear, which is great stuff also. But you address a more detailed approach to understanding the underwater environment, which is so necessary, at least for me. What I like about your approach specifically is that you don't simply say "I'm running a crankbait over an offshore ledge," you show with the simulated graphics how and where the ledge lies in relation to the underwater terrain and the structure that inhabits that ledge. And your thorough explanations on using your electronics to graph an area got me to invest in a Navionics chip instead of using the onboard Lowrance chart, which is something right there LOL. Between you and TactBass, I spend far too much time in front of the 'puter instead of on the water.

Excellent video! I am a lifetime bank banger and and have over the past few years ventured offshore, as my dad used to say, for every one fish shallow there are 5 deep. You are correct in that it is all about timing and feeding windows - I have a few "Milk runs" I call them that consistently produce fish at different and varying times during the day. I look for isolated offshore structure that many guys miss - one major takeaway from your video for me is the 10 cast rule...I might go to 15, but as you very well point out it is just like shallow fishing. I find myself bank banging in spring and fall and early morning, then fishing most of my day off shore, especially in summer, and it has really improved my catch rates, as well as size. I get stuck on soft plastics and need to expand into jig fishing and probing deep a little more with jigs. Thanks so much for making these great videos and I hope you keep making them!

Good video!!! I enjoyed watching this video and you have very good perspective on off shore fishing . I'm going to try my best to do the exact same thing when I get to go fishing at Arkabutla Lake , Ms. I live in Olive Branch, Ms. and takes me about 30 mins. to Arkabutla Lake. The crappie and Bass too are very plentiful , but they tend to move a whole lot !!! That's what everybody says that catches fish on Arkabutla consistently. My 38 year old son and me bought an Alweld 18/60 stick steering boat with livescope on it this year and he works for the FAA and stays very busy so I don't get to go that often, but I watch your channel and see you catching those big nice Bass and you just make a lot of sense with your style of fishing , so I'm always listening closely! You nailed it and I’m guilty too. I’ll spend more time on an offshore point or hump because I can see fish there and hit the high spots on the bank because I can’t see anything on the graph. Another thing I’ll do is hit those docks and lay downs on the bank between points or humps. I fished offshore all morning and hit a lay down on the bank and bam two fish in 5 minutes. You have a gift for explaining things that registers at least with me. I’m still gonna beat banks but you’ve made me a better offshore angler.

Love this idea. The only thing i noticed is that most of the guys I see do well on the NC lakes specifically around raleigh is that they will sit on these key spots "25lb clubs" all day long. I guess their philosophy is that if they sit there all day they will have a shot at every feeding window these fish have. Implementing this 10 cast philosophy on these lakes can be difficult due to the number of boats on these lakes that tend to fish small at least in my case. Lots of times in these tournaments if you leave the spot you won't get it back at least not to yourself for a couple of hours or maybe even the entire day. Maybe that could be the reason they sit on these spots all day??

Dropping knowledge. Just put a striker 4 on my kayak yesterday, first time using a fish finder and definitely milked an off shore area more than any dock. However, I do pick apart every dock, but its usually within 10 cast. I quickly learned to move off those off shore spots with no bites, but the area is marked.

Like most of your videos, this one is very informative, and you build your case step by step, very logically....However, let me give you an example of something a whole lot of us have to face up here in the North East: I, and my friends, fish the NYC reservoir system, which is a series of waters spread out over Westchester and Putnam and Orange Counties in New York. These waters average anywhere from 1200 to 2500 acres, some a bit more, but we have a severe restriction: no motors of any kind, including , electric....So we are essentially rowing relatively huge bodies of water, where, we must pay strict attention to wind hourly forecasts, as, if you are caught far from your launching area and the wind really comes up, against you, you can be in a whole lot of trouble fast. As such, it is not easy at all to fish many spots per day, due to the sheer magnitude of the extents of your physical ability for row for so many miles. Also: when fishing offshore, any day where wind is higher than a certain amount, makes it extremely difficult to maintain boat control. Consequently, we have no choice but to spend more time on each spot, fishing it very thoroughly because we can only , literally, fish so many of them during an outing. Our boats are stored on the premises, chained to trees, so, we cannot just launch anywhere we want to, however, we can sometimes have more than one boat on a water in different areas, which are often miles away from each other.....It really changes the narrative tremendously.....These waters do NOT appear in Navionic type maps, so, although we have printed maps showing the contours, it is not very detailed and consequently, it is a long learning process to figure out the subtleties and nuances of our offshore structure. Many times, when people hear this, their first instinct is to say: Why not use an anchor? But in our case, 80 to 90 percent of our structural elements have rock as the cover factor, either piles, walls, or other various types, and all too often , if you DO anchor, the first cast might get hung up, and then you would have to constantly draw and lower the anchor, making more work than anything else. I guess, if there is a moral to this whole story, it is that if you fish from a bass boat, and have navionics and spot lock on your trolling motor, be VERY thankful and learn how to avail yourselves of these luxuries.

I agree with the feeding windows however add two more variables to the equation, reaction strikes and poking. Sometimes just because they are out of their feeding window doesnt mean you cant get them to bite. Fishing erratically can make a fish bite without being hungry. Also poking works to, taking advantage of their aggressive nature. If you keep casting and casting eventually that bass is going to get so annoyed, it will generate a reaction strike. Poking requires patience though lol.

This video is gold! Are you scanning these areas each time to pull up to fish them?

I agree with much of what you said and successful Bass fishing is ALL about percentages and playing the best odds but dude, I go and catch that many fish almost every time I fish without any graphing or electronics at all. I've been looking into the different units because I'm ready to make the investment into a good one but I was thinking that I would catch at least double those numbers once I had electronics😥🤔

Great video...still a dilema... might not ever be the right feeding time at any...or fish bank all day and get 7 -10 always eventually...
