Hi Antonio 👋 Spanish is my mother language and English is my second language which I started to learn when I was seven years old. My dad put me in a bilingual school where my subjects were in English, i.e. math, science, social studies, geography, history, even religion. Besides, all my teachers were Americans. So that was my "artificial" environment, mainly in school. But my dad took care of buying lots of books in English and encouraged me to read a lot at home. Because of this I was able to find a job at the Panama Canal Commission and the U.S. Army bases stationed in Panama (my home country) back in the 80s. I worked a total of 14 and a half years as a U.S. Federal Government employee, listening, writing and speaking English, Monday through Friday. Can you believe that I have even dreamed in English?!?!?!?!? I don't dream that often though. In the year 2000 I started working as a theatre professor at the University of Panama. In 2003 I was able to go to Missouri and study an MFA in Theatre. But... In my late 50s I started noticing that I was forgetting my English, and I realized that I was not having as much English exposure as I used to have back in the 80s or my two years in Missouri. I panicked as I was forgetting my English. So I started watching TV programs and reading out loud, and I even found a bilingual church where I was able to make new native English speaking friends. But now I found your channel in You Tube!!!!!! How awesome! I get to review English with you! I especially love the pronunciation challenges and vocabulary (I enjoyed so much the one with kitchen utensils 😄❤😄❤😄❤😄❤😄!!!!!!) By all means, keep up the good work you are doing. Lots of "luvings" and blessings to you! 🌻🌻🌻❤☕

I agree with everything you said in this video. When I decided to surround myself mostly with English, I started thinking in English more and more often. Now I even tend to use typical English phrases in my native language, which sometimes makes me sound weird lol. In my opinion, the most important thing is to never think of what you watch, read or listen as something boring or study-related. You have to enjoy what you do☺

I have learned English for eleven years in my school education which focused on exams. After a long term of learning,I still don’t know how to use English in many many scenes. Languages mean ways to how to think. When I want to say something in English,my native language comes out first. Then I will translate Chinese into English in brain. So the expression is Chinglish. It doesn’t follow the way of English thinking. I can’t totally understand the English essays which are written by foreign writers but I can understand the ones from native writers. So I have not built the English thinking in my brain.I always doubt that my expression is wrong. Rather than learning English, I'd rather say I'm doing translation.

I want to perfect my English and want to be a polyglot just like you. Hi Antonio! To be completely honest I have no idea how my "thinking in english" happened. What I know for sure is that I have from a very young age a huge passion for the language, because of poor education due to english teachers' lack of knowledge of the actual language I learnt everything I know by self-teaching. Watching tv shows just as you said, movies, all the settings of my devices in English, also reading in English. I had the great opportunity to be reccomanded by my school to take part in a program that required moving to the USA for either 6 months, a year or 2 years. I've stayed there for a year and week. I fell in love and my english improved drastically! It is so important to keep practicing and most of all to enjoy while you do it! I'm sending you a hug! Keep up the good work :D

How to start speaking in English: - surround yourself with English - watch movies in English with English subtitles, - listen to podcasts, - change the language of your devices into English - Stop translating everything (try to think it already in English) - keep your mind active (try to name what you see, to describe what you see, think of what you did,of what needs to be done, of what you will do tomorrow in English) - Have small conversations with yourself and if you don't know the words for something, try to find alternative ways of saying it - keep your sentences short and simple

Reading was the primary practice and biggest gain toward fluency since it expanded my vocabulary when I started composition 1 in college. I was scared to express myself, but everyone else was in the same boat there, and I realized at the end of the course that that was the sparkle that achieved my fluency. That said, we all learn differently, and I completed my listening 100% by working with American people in general and avoiding hanging out with my Spanish fellows during the week. Nowadays, I hang out with both, and English comes naturally, but it took me a few books to read, which I guess was the most extensive practice ever. Do not be scared since it is a transition to learning another language. You got this😉

@@batman5754 Well, this is what happened. I learned English back home and moved to the USA, but that barrier did not allow me to express myself 100% well, so I was still insecure and always stuck in conversations due to the same daily situations. When I started college here, I was empowered to read daily at home and in class with every professor I have been with, expanding new vocabulary, new terminology since nursing is my field, and new ways of saying things differently. So, that was the last step in correcting what I was missing in my ESL final learning phase after all those years of insecurity while speaking English in public.

Hi everyone ! Those were great tips Antonio....let me share my experience, my parents spoke spanish at home and we lived in the USA so everything I had to do and say was in English during the day, but at home I switched my chip to Spanish. We did this for a period of 20+ years and now I am able to think in both languages.... it is really easy for me. Thanks for your tips !
