When u said trip the breaker…that’s what my washer is doing…so it’s in the motor wiring I need to be looking!

Those motors are bi directional motors, they turn one direction during agitation/ wash cycle and the opposite way in pump out and spin. You have to test both windings

There are a few mistakes here though admittedly using the breaker is a good idea. (I never use one). First off, some motors will just hum when you do not use the start capacitor and start winding. Also turning the shaft will start some motors but often not start all motors; hence the need to use the capacitor and start winding. This also confirms that your start winding is good. (The 2 speed and/or CW / CCW wound motors with the violet wire are often ones that need the start winding to run. While testing only the one high speed winding does not test the second winding, if the primary winding (blue wire to white wire) spins up and the second winding (white black to violet wire) will usually be fine; HOWEVER, the second winding should be tested for continuity (about 2.8 ohms) as well as no shorts to ground. Also look at winding s for any obvious signs of overheating or damage. In MOST cases both windings will be good of testing the primary winding (with capacitor and start winding included in test) and the continuity testing of the second winding. ALSO, a faulty start switch can cause a motor to not function properly. Issues are typically related to dirty worn contacts or stuck (welded) contacts. The start switch is easy to remove and open and the contacts checked and cleaned up with some fine sandpaper. The one response on the motor not running long enough to test for overheating... 3 things can cause a motor to overheat... 1-bad bearings, 2-a faulty start switch (either mechanically not disengaging the start winding or a welded start winding switch.) 3-partially shorted winding. Typically if the bearings are good and all connections good the motor will not overheat. Drag caused by bad bearings is the primary cause for motor overheating. A partially shorted winding can also cause it to overheat. Letting the motor run for a bit will show this or do a continuity test of all windings. Typical continuity test for these motors are primary winding are: blue to white wire - 1.8 ohms, start winding black to yellow wire - 8.5 ohms, secondary winding black/white wire to violet wire - 2.8 ohms. Finally on the motor bearings. these motors have oil impregnated sleeve bearings with an oil wick around them. When the oiled dries up, the bearings fail. About the only 2 ways to refresh the oil without drilling an oiler hole. The easiest is to add some oil (light machine oil only - like 3-in1 oil) around the shaft with the shaft pointing up and rotate the shaft a bit (do both sides). This will often prolong the heath of the motor but does not fill up the wick significantly. Properly oiling the wicks means popping the metal cap off the the ends of the motor and oil the wick. Getting the caps off without damaging them is not always an easy prospect. In most cases, the first method will work well enough.

That’s alot of good info!! Thank you😁✌️ I actually did not know about oil being inside of the motor by centre area of shaft or somewhere closer to it .

What I have set up to test motors is a double gang outlet box, screwed onto a board, where the on/off for the plug is controlled by a light switch. This, in turn, is plugged into a power strip which has a breaker at the top. I have several different cords I can plug into the test outlet, depending on what type of connectors are on what I'm wanting to test. It was a bit of a hassle to wire up; but, no more so than a light switch to control any other outlet you want to be able to turn on & off.

That test isn’t a sure way. The motor that you said was good could actually be bad. The reason is the motor takes some time to heat up. So 15-20 minutes to heat. It might start, but it will not restart.

Does anyone know where adapter shafts can be ordered, to convert these "double flat" shafts over to threaded shafts? (Hopefully, rather inexpensively...) I have several of these 1/2hp motors (which seem to be the "stock motor" for the Whirlpool, Kenmore, etc. line); and, I have several projects I'd like to use them for ~ none of which involve putting them back into a washing machine... ;-p
