How to test the Resistance of Spark Plug Wires using an Ohm Meter

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This Video explains how to test the resistance of the Spark Plug Wires using an Ohm Meter.
Note: each manufacturer of spark plug wires will have a different spec for the resistance depending on what material the conductor is made out of , this Video shows how to test the resistance, once You have gathered the specs from the manufacturer for the particular brand You are testing You will know if it is within specs. ( The wires used in this Video have a spec of 1,000 ohms min per foot to 4,000 ohms per foot maximum )

Thanks I needed that, been chasing what appears to be a spark timing issue on an old points &condensor type ignition. Can’t believe I’m going to say this but I wish I could use the scanner on this one.70s komatsu with Datsun 6cylinder.

That is a nice tip to know and remember and I didn't know how to test that before and I have multi-meters at home to test equipment.

What if you need to test an electrical connector (such as a water pump connector) for resistance, and you don't want to detach or cut the other end of the wire? Can you attach the negative to the engine block as a ground, while testing the plug for resistance? Or do you have to find the specific wire and remove it from the ECM?

Brother you should simply describe the normal per foot resistance range of healthy spark plug wire. 4kohm per foot means the 3 feet wire should have 12kohm resistance but it showed 8kohm. Please explain. Thank you.

12,000 is the maximum ohms. If it's under that like 8,000 ohms your wire is good. If it's over 12,000 ohms your wire is bad

I really can't understand. I bought a brand new cable spark plug. Kia Rio Model It measures 1.8 ohms The old one cable measures 2.2 ohms. Both with the same length. What my conclusion should be? Please advise, I am freaking out because of my lack of intelligence. Kind Regards

#1 If the resistance is that low you got solid copper wire cables, which means that the plug fitting over the spark plug has an inbuilt resistor. If you got high Ohm cables, which are kilo-Ohms per ft, like in this video, it is for electrical noise suppression, which is the type of spark plug cables most often used in modern cars and I would guess your Kia also has them . Are you sure you dont mean Kilo-Ohms? #2 Either way such small a difference does not make a difference. You are dealing with high voltage so the difference in current between 1.8 Ohm and 2.2 Ohm or 1.8 KOhm or 2.2KOhm is negligible and wont make a difference to spark strength or timing.
