    It's because the snow isn't that compressed, the structure of the snow isn't good, as such it has a high risk of collapsing into itself and then starting to move with gravity. Given other snow is likely like that on the mountain too, it starts a chain of collapsing snow, which gains speed and force as it travels, instant avalanche.

  • @Wasabiofip

    @Wasabiofip

    @@ZayxSt You sample a spot or maybe a few, like this guy does, and that gives you an idea what the snow is like as a whole. However, for large ski mountains, they don't usually bother doing that for the avalanche-prone alpine areas. After a large snowfall they will just chuck a few bombs at those areas in the early morning before the lifts open, so if the snow is avalanche ready it goes off when no one is around, if not, then it doesn't matter. You can often hear the bombs down in the valley - nothing more exciting than hearing the avalanche cannons in the morning and knowing there must be some new snow!

  • @judahwilliamson8967

    @judahwilliamson8967

    Not exactly true, while trees act as anchors, they can also become trigger points, particulary when their is warm(ish) sun. Avalanches often trigger from anchor point to anchor point, so if you imagine very gladed trees, an avalanche is more likely to trigger from one tree to another. The biggest reason trees are dangerous in regards to avalanches is because if an avalanche does occur in the trees, you are very likely to hit a tree during the slide. To your point, denser tree groves tend to hold snow well, however the best way to avoid an avalanche is to stay out of avalanche terrain.

    Yes it was? What do you think you're supposed to be seeing here? Sudden collapse doesn't mean it collapses the instant something touches it. It means when it does collapse, it collapses suddenly... It's not fucking rocket science. They're testing to see what happens to the snow after periods of smaller disturbances, because of the unknown factor of what is underneath the top layer.

    @@Zooted-YF imo "Sudden collapse" sounds like what all snow does to someone who doesn't see heavy snow ever. He never got to say if it was a good or bad thing but thanks for actually saying it lol. It was like talking about computer parts to someone who can barely turn them on.😂
