Here in California, around 2010, I went to a Porsche dealership just to see a new GT3 and im just wearing a polo shirt and pants and driving a 95 civic. One of the sales asked me if I want a Porsche 911 and I said Of course, but told him I cant afford it, and he said do you want to drive one, and I said yes but im just here to see a GT3 and he said No worries. He asked for my drivers license and he went to their storage along the dealership and 5 mins later he brought an old 2007 GT3 and he let test drive the car. After the test drive, still told him I cant afford the a porsche and he said “its ok, at least you have experience to drive a Porsche” and up to now, still cant forget the power and its rawness of a GT3.

What a good salesman! I got told I was too young to test drive an Audi S8 (used) when I really wanted to buy it and drove an hour and a half to see that exact one! Only 1 of 3 for sale "near" me and they knew I was coming far

The Mercedes dealer used to look at me like I was cluttering up the showroom, so I was surprised that when I switched to BMW, they treat me like royalty and let me (encourage me) to test drive anything and everything, as well as inviting me to every VIP event / unveiling / product launch. Yes I know its just good sales practice and they just want to get more money out of me, but it's nice to be treated like you matter to them, rather than you are not good enough to drive their cars.

I had a same experience with my dad when he was looking for new SUV. First we went to BMW dealership where we basically got full review form the salesman about their cars and they literally bagged us to test drive some of the cars that we had in mind. After that we went to other brands dealership and then we went to Mercedes. When we showed up, no one really wanted to talk to us so we basically started looking at cars on our own. After like 10 minutes car salesman finally came up to us. He showed us around and when we asked if we could test drive it, he started doing BS things like that first we have to configure car and then he's gonna need us to fill out some sort of personal form. Well at the end, he got to test drive the car next week, but over all experience was worst that I have ever experienced.

It varies by the dealership. I've heard people complain about not being allowed to test drive a 370Z at the nissan dealership and being surprised how easy it is to test drive a benz (or a BMW or a Porsche).

Local Benz dealer saw me pull up in my Fiat 500 Abarth, tshirt, jeans, didn't notice the $300 shoes and $2400 watch I guess, I wanted to look at the new SL Roadster, she told me that didn't look like it was in my price range, and brought me to look at C-Classes and a freakin SMART car. I walked next door to the Ford dealership and bought a 350R off the showroom floor that day.

Both mercedes and bmw near me are bad. I test drove a used 335 and had the worst experience. I get it its not a new car but still, first i got put on a waiting list that involved other customers walking in after me and being helped first because they were older and taken more seriously. Like 30 minutes later im finally being helped by some snooty bitch in high heels. Who wouldn’t let me drive the car i wanted to because it was a manual and thought i would burn the clutch..so i had to test drive an automatic instead. And about halfway through the test drive she doubts im even buying the car and tells me to go back to the dealer. When i get to the lot she makes me repark it like 6 times because it was parked “too close” to the m3. By this time i was already pissed off and basically got out of the car and explained how that was the worst fucking customer service ive ever experienced and then i left and bought a manual 335 at a cadillac dealership who treated me the same as all their other customers

Me and my friend walked into the Ferrari Dealer in Orlando Florida in late 2012, we pulled up in a 2012 Acura TL that was a loaner because his was in the shop(they didn’t know that). I was wearing my black Five finger death punch T-shirt and jeans, also bear in mind I’m 6’8 and 300lbs, they must’ve thought I was an NFL player. Anyways, we walked around for a few minutes and I stop to look at e Testarossa they have, I look at the car for a minute when a salesman walked over to me and says “you wouldn’t fit”, I jokingly say “Well, that’s a shame, out of curiosity do you have one I would fit into”?, he walks me over to a 599 GTO and says “you could probably fit into this one, would you like me to get the keys”?, the kid in me said yes, but I came clean to the guy that I was a nobody and couldn’t afford the lug nuts on the wheels, he thanked me for my honesty, I thanked him for his time, pretty sure I could’ve gotten a test drive out of it if I were a different type of person.

I’m starting to look at getting into exotic cars, and I have ZERO experience at a luxury dealer on the sales side. I genuinely appreciate your no BS approach to explaining how to get into a car. I’m a person that has to drive a car before I consider buying it, and I’ve been turned off of nice cars in the past because of it. Now I can walk into a luxury dealer with confidence, even if I have no experience like I mentioned earlier. Thank you again, and I’m a subscriber for life!

Flip side of my F150 comment below, in 2012 I was waiting for the launch of the Focus ST in the US. The day my local dealer got one, I called to schedule a test drive and told them I was very interested. I wanted to make sure it was as much fun as advertised but I was basically sold. I arrive at the dealership and meet the sales guy (I'm 25 at the time he's in his 50's) he looks at me and says oh I'm busy I'll find someone else to help you. He clearly thought i was just there to mess around. He gives me to the new guy, I drive the car and love it. Sit down to work out details and my original sales guy who blew me off is finding out that the customer he blew me off for has bad credit and they can't finance him for a truck. My guy asks how many months I want to finance it for and I say loud enough for the other sales guy to hear 0, I'll trade in my paid off car and write a check for the difference. I'd worked hard, saved up and it's a Ford not a Ferarri. Original guy probably should have just taken me for the test drive lol.

This is a GREAT video, and I'm glad you made it. As someone who works in automotive sales, what you are saying is spot on! Let me add something, aside from not bullshitting (which is VERY important), make an APPOINTMENT! But, make one during slow/quiet times. Early Saturday and Sunday morning is a bad time, as salespeople are usually delivering cars that customers have already purchased. However, any time after 1pm or 2pm on the weekends (particularly Sunday) is good. Why? Salespeople are usually bored out of their minds, and they'll fall over themselves to help you! LOL

This is true. When I was looking for my 996.2 ( between yrs 02-04) I was very specific as to wanting it in grey or silver and must be a manual, hardtop only, must have black interior. The local Porsche dealership here in New Orleans didnt have any used 996.2s in stock but tried to get me into a nice used Cayman for about the same pricerange I was looking for the 996.2. Although I told them no thanks I rather the 911 996 they still wanted me to go for a test ride anyways. Needless to say I still didnt drive a Cayman and eventually found my 996.2 in Dallas on a business trip. But like you said. If you goto a dealership looking fpr a specific model with specific specs then the dealer will most likely let you test drive a car or two to make the sale or perswade you into something slighly differe r

Good advice. I walked into my local Ferrari dealer last year looking at either a 911 Turbo or the California. I was shocked they let me just take them out to test drive. I ended up buying an LC500. I came back this year, spoke to the same salesman, gave him a budget I was looking at and a specific used Ferrari they had on the lot. I ended up buying a different car than I came in for. Same type, an F430, but a Spider and in Rosso Corsa rather than the white one. I told them I didn't even want to look at anything outside my budget. I had no problems, but I'm 52 years old and I assume they knew I was legit.

I test drove an F10 M5 wearing gym clothes because I know cars and was legit serious about buying one in 12-18 months. I even told them there's no way I was buying it that day and was going to wait until they depreciated another $15-20k. It's not hard as long as you're genuine about it.

100% about attitude, not clothing. I dress well everyday, but it has been 95-100 here lately, not wearing a dress shirt and slacks to go test a car or 2 and any smart salesman gets that.

I have never taken a Ferrari for a test drive but I have driven Ferraris. But you can walk into many high end dealerships and get test drives. Many dealers who sell exotics in the 100-200k range will let you test drive cars if you are straight forward, and are kind to them. Way before I had enough money to buy my first Porsche I walked into my local Porsche dealer and was just eyeballing a few cars, I kept coming in every few months (my car was being serviced or washed at one of the other dealerships on the lot) he offered to let me take one out for a spin, I took out a 911 targa, almost every time I came in if he was free he would offer to let me take something out for a few minutes to drive. 4 years later I decided to pick up a Porsche and guess who I went to. They are not always looking for the quick sale very often they will build a relationship with people in order to make a sale years down the line. Most of the time these sales reps don't have customers flowing through so they have some spare time, and my dealer easily has over a hundred new Porsches on the lot, and for the most part adding 5-10 miles onto them won't do anything to their value. Its all about how you behave like you said, but dealers will let you test drive if you are nice.

A trick I have used to be able to test some pretty new exotics..............I look at the car, then tell the salesman I would like to speak with their finance person if I could, just to make sure I can qualify for some sort of reasonable financing, before I get serious looking at the car. They always do. Work out a couple scenarios with their finance person. I always get to drive the car, and they don't treat you like a slub, because you don't wear a suit to go car shopping.

Very true advice dropped in here. On the other hand, when I walked into a Porsche dealership to ask about details of the Boxster, they didnt mind at all to give me the Car catalogue which looked quite expensive and nice. Today I might not afford it, tmr I may. In fact yes I can now. And I’ll remember that experience. In fact I actually did think of renting one for a weekend. It’s a little present I can give to myself.

Very sage advice, sir - as someone in the business, it is very easy for professionals to sniff out dreamers or folks that just want to mile up cars with no intention to buy... kind of ruins things a little bit for the actual buying public at times. If you're a buyer, it will be evident very early on in the interaction. Be cool, respect is a two-way street and it isn't difficult to earn quickly as long as you're genuine as Rob says.

Never test drove one before getting it, it wasn't necessary. Driving it around the block for 10 mins wasn't going to be representative of 200k miles of ownership. I did all my shopping over the phone/email, I was clearly very serious about buying and the lack of interest from some sales folks actually surprised me.

He didn’t buy it as he obviously he didn’t have the money (9 years later he does } but I walked out with a 3 year old Maserati I still have to this day. Be legitimate you’ll get a test drive.

Bought my first S-Class without test driving it, but to be honest that's mainly because I had driven other friend's cars so I knew the car anyway. I've never had a problem getting to drive any car ever to be honest. Porsche was the coolest car dealership though, I went to look at a Cayman S and the salesman was cool as hell, basically forced me to test drive a 911. Worst dealers at GM dealers, they've blown maybe 80% of potential sales of cars I was interested in buying from them.

I had to pause the vid and comment, you should never fill out a credit app just to fake it to get the test drive, that's a hit at your report and score, and some dealers might run it more than once meaning you're tagged for each individual inquiry. Better option, if they offer refundable deposit put a decent one on a credit card, afterwards get the refund, and since it's CC any issues and you can run a claim with the CC company.
