Do you happen where the limit switch would be in a older Lenox gh5 series furnace?

Great video, but would like to know what model fieldpiece meter you were using. Does it have a low +/- range? I have been looking to move away from the Fluke meters.

  • @warrior7772

Just because the the limit switch checks out electrically with the meter doesn't mean it's working properly. It may have a mechanical binding or its thermostatic control may have gotten mis-adjusted.

My White-Rodgers limit switch 5D51-090, has a lever protruding from the cover. The lever moves from 'auto' to the center between 'auto' & 'manual' over a period of time. Fan runs continually and It then blows only cold air. I move the lever back to 'auto' and it works fine for several months or a year and then I have to move it again/ This has been going on for a couple years now. Otherwise the furnace works fine. Do I need a new limit switch?

Yes, I replaced a Honeywell fan-limit control from the 1950's it had a switch on the front cover, moving the switch back and forth the fan continuously stayed on in either mode it was set at

i have replaced my thermocoupling, and have installed a new gas valve on my miller cmf80-AG the pilot works , but after i turn the thermostat up to where the furnace should kick on, the pilot goes out and doesnt light the furnace , would that be caused by the limit switch?

Sandra Stan in a word, no. You may have a gas pressure problem or bad gas valve

We have a 22yr,. old Arcoair gas/pack on the roof, recently been having issues with blower not shutting down when the heater down cycles. Numerous times I had to shut the power off for some length of time, then it would work ok for all day.. I am assuming the problem could be with the limit switch or fan relay, I just hate to replace the whole unit unless I absolutely have to..

If it trips the high limit switch will it also cut power to the WiFi thermostat (no batteries)? When it happens, there's no voltage between R and C for about 45 seconds. What could it be?

  • @JBK63

In the normal wiring scheme yes it will. Things could be rewired in such a way that the high limits switch the energizes the gas valve but does not de energize the thermostat

Why would you spin the dial by hand? That de-calibrates the temperature sensor. Don't be lazy. Do this the right way by turning on the furnace and make sure the temperature causes the contacts to close. Then turn off the heat and ensure that the fan is no longer powered after the temperature reaches the lower setpoint.

@@thegitago7823 When I was 13 a technician came out to assess the furnace in the apartment we lived at. I watched the technician move the dial to check the fan on and fan off. I knew at 13 this would damage the limit control and told the technician to hold the dial and move the pointers. He said " it won't hurt it" and he learned the hard way the burners and fan were short cycling more after he left! Turns out the furnace had a badly cracked heat exchanger and the cracked heat exchanger was fooling the fan switch, cooling down the combustion chamber causing the fan switch to turn the fan off for about 50 seconds and then would kick the fan back on once the burners heated the plenum above 100°F

Either the switch on the thermostat subbase ( if you have one) marked "COOL" "OFF" "HEAT" , "FAN ON" " AUTO" make sure your fan switch is in AUTO position, if it is in "FAN ON" position will cause the fan to run continuously. Also some fan-limit controls have a fan and manual switch on them. Make sure the switch is set to Manual or the fan will continuously run if set to FAN mode. Honeywell fan-limit control usually you pull out or push in a white plastic knob on the front Cover. On a White Rogers fan limit control usually you slide the switch to the left or right to select the FAN or AUTO mode desired

Consider...no judging or complaining about another in their ability to communicate how to do something... always look for more knowledge; one will learn more this way and spend less time worrying about how another does a particular way... just a suggestion. No need to be critical of the person, however be critical in the performance of your work. There are master techs I have worked with who were not effective teachers. Here is one tech that I have learned a lot from. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJtk0K1tga_WitI.html By the way...learn to not take things personal...it is easy to do, but studies show that what one thinks about another doesn’t really matter. Try to understand all the conditions involved in the particular situation you may find yourself in regarding HVAC. I have have learned to liken troubshooting or just performing maintenance on a unit, to a doctor performing surgery or giving a physical examination. Good thing the units I have worked on were not human beings. And it is a good thing there is one basic design on the human being... not so with HVAC units, however they all do the same thing...basically...push heat from point A to point B. Just a perspective.
