How to Test a Hydrostatic Transaxle

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is a simple way to quickly test to see if a hydro static trans axle works. Simply power it by an electric drill then actuate the engagement lever through the motion to see if it moves.
This comes in handy when you are pulling used parts from a salvage yard and are unsure of the trans axle condition. This is a HydroGear that I swapped into a Craftsman Lt1000 lawn tractor that had a broken Peerless SilenTrac hydro drive system. This is not a sure fire test but gives you a basic indication of the transaxles condition.

You can do this with the unit running while on a stand. If the pump has failed as mine did, nothing will happen. Better than tearing the whole unit out and using a drill. I suppose you could do this at a salvage yard to test a used unit to see if it's good.

Definitely a good way to test them but most of them only act up once they start warming up that's when they start slipping but with my experience with most repairs it's usually a stretched belt I'd have to say only one out of every ten is actually the transmission

My pump/motor assy is difficult to remove, but from all I can tell looks to be tight. I have only one thing left to look into is the axle release mechanism which is hidden up inside the pump. There was not a single piece of metal on the magnets. The only thing that was old was the oil. I was told it was a sealed axle. Well, It's NOT!
