How to Test a Capacitor With a Multimeter
(Using the capacitance mode on the multimeter)
In this video, we're going to learn how to test a capacitor with a multimeter. This is a very important skill to have if you're working with electronic devices, and it's a great way to troubleshoot problems.
We'll start by explaining how to use the multimeter, and then we'll test the capacitor. This is a simple procedure, and after watching this video, you'll be able to test your own capacitors with ease!
1. Remove the capacitor to be tested from the electric board.
2. Discharge the capacitor completely by connecting it across a resistor, and remove the capacitor thereafter for testing.
3. Connect the capacitor terminals to the leads of the probe (positive terminal of the capacitor to the red probe and the negative terminal of the capacitor to the black probe of the multimeter). In a typical polar capacitor, the longer lead is the positive terminal, and the shorter lead is the negative terminal.
4. Rotate the selection knob of the multimeter and select the capacitance mode.
Note the value on the display panel and compare it with the value given on the capacitor case to check for any faults.
5. Some fluctuation from the actual value is acceptable (typically within a tolerance band of 10-20 %), but if the displayed value is very high or very low compared to the actual value, the capacitor may be faulty and has to be replaced.

You're replying to an AI text to speech generator..
when you desolder a capacitor, there is no longer pin on this.... the longer pin is only on new capacitors....

Dear Cathy, polarized capacitors have their leads labeled on their bodies as well, and some types are non-polar also. I hope this helps.

Hope you got the answer already. @SeaHay is correct. check the label.
Why are you yelling at me?
Stop yelling at me. You're not my real dad!
Could you pls make more videos about multimeter? It is realky helpful MOSFET test, Resistor test, Diod test and more Thank you
I’m so glad an AI generated video can exist to tell me to use the capacitor setting to measure capacitance. Makes you wonder if maybe the resistance setting measures resistance?

Or voltage measures voltage?
great job men
An Excellent explanation ❤
What values for the resister? We bought a 1F cap years ago (25yr) for a car stereo and given a small 1ķ resister to charge this cap up. That things was glowing red and burnt within a second.
Hiw to test n check the cap by ohmmeter? Not by the cap mode on mm
Thank you sir
So when you test two or more caps in parallel what should the result be? What if you test two caps in series + to neg and + to negative?
Enlightening🎉
Who taught you to misspell so badly?
Great..... Thanks.
You are a genius
An esr meter is also handy
It might be more costly in time and budget, but a real-world depiction would do all of us far better.
Tollarence?

For electrolytic caps, usually plus-minus 20%. In general, one should use the manufacturer's data sheet about this parameter. In our days, practically, you will never find a brand new capacitor reading above its nominal capacitance...The value will always be very near to minus 10%...😢
My multimeter doesn't have a capacitance testing section :(
Thank u very much ❤

What are we testing since it is completely discharged?

Capacitance
And this test will show you absolutely nothing. You must know the ESR of the capacitor which the multimeter does not tell you.
Why discharging?
It's the first step that is annoying. Is there a way to test a cap without soldering it from the circuit?

Yes, you can use an E.S.R meter instead of your multimeter. The measurements with it (for electrolytic caps only) are both reliable and faster in comparison to using the multimeter for testing ...Just remember to have the circuit under test out of power or you will destroy the instrument...
I don't think they heard you.... In China
Those are old models try and the new ones
Mine all say 0. But they actually work... I don't get it.
might be useful to learn to spell too!

Sorry, good video, just had a bad day and decided to be critical. 👍
My DMM don't have Capacitance Mode. Is Ohms mode OK?
🎉❤🎉
*WHAT?!* 🦻🏼🙉🦻🏼
I remove the capacitor from the board and by magic it still have it's long and short legs, youtube is full of bullshit nowadays 😂😂😂😂
