Regulators / Rectifiers play a crucial part in providing DC current to your machine, but when do you know if your rectifier is bad or not? In this video we demonstrate how to test to see if your OEM rectifier/regulator needs replaced. The rectifier part inside the regulator-rectifier takes care of converting the AC-current to the DC-current the battery needs. When looking for new electrical components Rocky Mountain ATV/MC has got you covered.

Saved many customers money by replacing a faulty rectifier vs replacement of "thought bad" stator. Great video
I have seen other do it yourself explain to do it both ways but you added the diagram which makes it all come together now.. thank you
Great simple explanation of how a rectifier works, i'm working on a honda pioneer 700 utv that is only charging 12.3 at idle and 13.3 at 5000 rpm. after watching this video and the one on stator i believe i have a bad rectifier but i'll know more after i perform these test. thank you Rocky Mountain atv.
Wow, , you saved my day, Immensely glad I am, that I came across your video .. almost on the verge of abandoning riding my bike due to battery issues.... why didn't I find you earlier..

Thank you for this video!! Misdiagnosed my stator as being bad before moving on to testing the regulator/rectifier on my 2016 KTM 500 EXC. Hadn't opened the case up yet and this set of tests confirmed my rectifier/regulator was still good even though I had a bad pin in the plug.
Excellent video, and very helpful schematic animations. Easy to understand what the test is doing and now I know the problem isn’t my rectifier.
The clearest and best explanation on KZread thanks
Thanks, thanks a lot.. this much easier explanation. I have no words to say.
Thanks for your help, I’ve just correctly diagnosed a faulty regulator rectifier on my Polaris ranger 570.
Simple explanation, great video. Thanks for sharing.
Best video I’ve seen on this subject. Thank you guys!
Thank you Sir, great explanation! Much rather know how to test my own equipment than to rely on a friend’s past experiences.
This was just what I needed and too the point with only the information I needed thank you for a great vidja.
Great graphics, made it easy to follow
Had lack of a harness and this will help get things plugged in
Love your simple tutorial 👍
Thanks for doing this!👍
Thanks! This helped loads!
you explained very simply and the diagram is very use full to understand about how to work regulator rectifier .thanks

Thank you. Best tutorial, I just solved my problem and I agree with all the positive reviews. Thanks
very well done and easy to understand. Thanks
Nice work folks. While going through your steps to do a dynamic stator test my stator performed just as you explained for a three phase stator. AC voltages at example RPM's. The thing that left me stumped was my Shop Manual states that an AC voltage reading should be between 10 and 12 VAC. Not giving any engine speed. At idle it is producing 17 VAC. Increased engine speeds also increased VAC. Should I assume this as a typo and direct my attention towards the rectifier? This is on a 2005 Bombardier Outlander 330 HO 4x4.
Thanks for the video!
Brilliant video, well done on explaining this so well
Thanks!! I have 3 out of 4 pins reading 5v like you said. But one reads 9!! Is this why my lights go DIM when i rev the bike?? I have checked the stator ac output and its within spec.
great One ..excellent Tuto ..easy to understand - easy to find the fault

If only there was a good wiring diagram and specifications from the manufacturer we could actually know what it should read. Lab scope pattern. NO way. they have them but would never share them with the public to help repair their products. Thank you Rocky for all you do for the general public. I find all the instructions you give are very accurate. Electronics is my specialty but without known good specs and patterns it's all guessing!
Brilliant video, looks like my bikes problem isn't the rectifier but at least that's one thing crossed off the list...thanks for the tuition
Brilliantly explained and demonstrated. Love people doing great job. Thank you.

Excellent, excellent, excellent! Thank you!
Great Video! I get 910 in my measurements instead of 300-500 as you said, is stg wrong with my regulator because my battery is not charging. I am waiting for your stator video also
Great video....simple and to the point. Exactly what I was after. Thanks.
I got the same year of impala up here in Sturgis s.d I’m going to switch to a hi output alt Great video btw, love to see more of them Well explained and to the point My girlfriend liked it to Ttul

Good explanations. Thank you.
Hey! Thanks for the video I have done the test on the rectifier and the stator. Both the stator and the rectifier pass the tests. Putting a voltmeter on my battery and getting the rpm up to 5k like stated in your other videos you have posted the battery voltage does not fluctuate at all. I also disconnected the red wire from the starter solenoid and tested the voltage coming from it with the engine running and it was very erratic going anywhere from 12 to 14.5 volts but as soon as I reconnect it back to the starter solenoid it basically flatlines and there is no change in battery voltage. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
:) . Clear and consice vids . Question: 2004 Yamaha YFM4FA . Charging @ 17.50 ~ 18 volts. Specs say 14.1 ~ 14.9 v . When doing a diode test get 623 ~ 630 on both + & - sides. No OLs. What should these readings be ? ( Manufactuer/ Model... Shindengen/SH640E) Thanks
I'm from in the Philippines I am a motorbike mechanic good job sir
Great video. Love the circuit flow illustration. But I cannot find your video on how to test stator. Could you please show me the link to that video?
Great work
this goes for street scooters as well. 150CC and down usually a 1 phase. some 3 phase. I had one go bad on a scooter that showed working correctly until a long drive at night and the volts dropped. was the regulator heating up and maybe a diode or scr going open. great basic test! 6 diodes on 3 phase. getting a service manual for your bike ETC is a big help.

Thanks for the explanation. I just did the tests on my 3 phase rectifier. Wires: I have 3 yellows, a black, a brown and a light brown with a red trace. I had thought that the light brown with red trace was positive but when I do this I get no reading between it and the 3 yellows. If I use the brown I get a consistent reading between it and all 3 yellows. Does that mean my positive is the three brown and the light brown with red is my neutral?
Thank you for your video it’s very interesting and helpful

Can this test be done on a sensitive ohms setting. On the 200k I get indications that it is allowing current one way and not the other way for the positive and negative
Great video as well
great showed illustration how it works 👍👏👏
Nice job..
Hello Rocky. Can you tell me how to check single-phase ? have husky 250 2016, problem with charging, 13,5V on the battery, check all(all is same manual) cant find problem, may be can you help me.
Excellent MERCI 👍
Thank you for the clear explanation.
A link straight to the Alt. check would have been handy, I checked the rec/reg and got slightly higher number on my spare e.g 583, 588 and 603.thank you for the excellent vid. on this, cheers.
thnx for sharing this video .
Hello, Thanks for the video. I have checked my rectifier as shown in the video and is found to be in good condition. However, when connected to the stator and the battery, the charging voltage goes over 16V So, i disconnected the rectifier from the battery and checked the voltage and it reads out in AC.. Can a bad battery damage the rectifier? STATOR: the voltage from each phase gives out 19V AC and goes upto 60V at 5000rpm so i feel it is good... Please help
Hi many Thks four your excellent video I have a scooter Piaggio 2T other when I drive same one tell me my rear light is blinking after 2 days all lights front and rear blow also when I drive in full throttle the scooter same times cut down the speed what you think is the regulator voltage have same damage my regulator is 8 pin thank you very very much appreciate
Hi there, I have a triumph street triple r 2011 and am having problems with keeping the battery charged. I did this test - with the positive probe on the negative connection i was getting a reading in the 500's on all pins, but with the negative probe on the positive connection i was getting a reading in the 130's on all pins (note my diode tester shows readings differently, e.g. as 138 not as 0.138). Does this imply the rectifier is the problem? Thanks.
Hi, Thank you for your site. I have a 2001 Yamaha Vstar 1100. Tested a (NEW) rectifier bench test was OK. Ran engine to 3000RPM Volts stayed a 14.4 excellent. However, when i rode the bike, voltage jumped to 15.7? Previously I found the "OLD" battery overcharged swelled up and blown, tested the old rectifier , at 3000RPM jumped to 19+volts, i replaced the rectifier with the a NEW one and NEW battery.. Problem listed above. what tests can I perform to find overcharging, Thank You
hi great video. thanks for sharing. the lights on my bike are pulsing, tail light ,headlight and neutral switch. would a faulty regulator/rectifier cause this 🤔
Hello rocky mountain, can we also verify a 3 phase rr unit by looking at the pins on the plug/ port in the rrunit. Doesn't 3 pin on the rrunit mean 3 phase charging system. I.e the top 3 pins for the battery positive, negative, don't know what the middle pin do, and the bottom two pin for the alternator. Am i right or is there something u can add to it. Thanks
thank you.. appreciate it..
I want to know if the forward readings should be a similar value on both the positive & negative terminals as mine are double the value on the negative side ?
I know this video has been around for a while but I’m testing the reg Rec on an 02 Ducati monster 750Si.e. It has 3 yellow wires so sayings it’s 3 phase. On the other plug it’s got 2 red and 2 green. Should the test be run forward and reverse for each red and green wire across the yellows like this video? So did the tests off both the + and - sides and they passed. So guessing it’s good. My reason for testing is a slow drain on the batt. I have had a swollen batt also. I replaced it. I have to put the bike on a charger if I’m not driving every couple days. I tried an amp test for parasitic draw but it must be so low the meter didn’t see it. What a pain
Got a new regulator and decided to test before install. Getting 141 reading for positive lead side. Is that ok? Idk what low reading means. My last regulator had high readings and swapped directions. Thank you
Thank you. Would this unit cause me to have no power to the switch. When I turn my switch on I get nothing but if I cross selonoid it will start.
I have a Polaris 570. what do you think the normal peak starting current should be?
When I put the positive lead in the positive side, he gives me a value.. 1950 on the 3 yellow pins. It is faulty?
Quick question i have a small 50 cc dirt bike and the bike is set up so if the battery is mising or dead the bike wont start (no spark ) and the Regulator has gone bad and ever since i cant fing a regulator that charges my battery , basically the power is comming to the regulator but nothing comes out and i have tried 3 brand new ones , the regulator has 4 diferent colours of whire , what i'm missing here ?
Hello in my atv (access lander 300) in dynamic test on stator show 3.5 acv , 3.5acv and 6.5 acv. The other test is good but not charging the battery. The problem is the stator?
2014 polaris sportsman 570 - i ran the test as you described and believe i have a bad rectifier. findings - 1. with my mulitmeter negative on the positive battery lead i had .45 reading 2. with my multimeter negative on the negative battery lead it had 1.2 reading. 3. with my multimeter positive on either of the battery leads it had an OL reading. can you confirm this my rectifier is not functioning properly. thanks!
Hi. If the values is higher than .5 some are .4 , 1.3 and .9 when I out the black lead. Can you please help to know if that is good?
Is there a way to test if the stator is bad by using the wires without having to pull the fly wheel off just to check? My voltage is reading around 18 when giving it throttle I tested the voltage regulator like in the video and it seems to be ok
Hi folks. I have a Honda VF750f Interceptor which I am restoring. My issue is this , having got the bike running, after a while I noticed the battery was starting to cook so I did some electrical tests and found that the battery was being charged at 18.5 volts. I did multi meter tests on the alternator and regulator and found the alternator to be fine but the regulator was not. So replacing the regulator and battery solved the problem. the battery is new but I've used a second hand regulator I had, but it works. My problem know is that in running the engine up to temperature to then adjust carb settings I had the seat off of the bike and when I put my hand on the seat rail above the regulator and touched the regulator with my finger and got severely burnt. I now the regulator runs worm but surely not that hot. I noticed that as from standard the regulator is mounted on a stiff plastic board and not on a metal plate which I would have thought would of acted as a heat sink. Should it run this hot , or do you think this is why the previous regulator ended up over charging ? What could you recommend to solves this suspected over heating. Many thanks, Mike.
Video is little old but hopefully you still check. I have 2007 V Star 1100 and when first started I get 13.8V at battery. After a few minutes running, I only get 12V or less. I checked stator harness and get over 48V when fast idol so I believe stator is fine. Can rectifier work in start up then stop sending charge to battery?
Very good explained , thank you ! I still have one question ; What if the readings are above 0.500 ? I have average readings from about 0.510

Have a 07 can am ds250 that lost spark changed the stator .the rectifier. The coil wire brand new battery and plug any idea why this machine has no spark when you crank it over
Hi, Would a broken Rectifier be responsible for the current being drawn from the battery even with the bike switched off?
I am looking for the ohms standards for a 2019 Can Am Outlander. Any Ideas?
hi the question my regulator has 3 wires (black green and red )i get a reading from the green to the 3 yellow but not from the black to the 3 yellow thanks any help will be much appreciated
What about the relay starter? I thought that the relay starter also played a part on the chargin system. If it's a bad relay starter then the battery can also be drained.
This was helpful. My name is Dustin also, wow.
Does this and the stator stop it from running or no.. I have a 2001 Yamaha worrior 350 and the dude I got it from said that he got it running then he said the stator started smoking. Then the atv stopped running.. I replaced everything one that atv except the stator and was wondering if the stator could stop it from it running.. even got a brand new battery for it.. and it's trying to start but won't.. need help..
My 2017 yz450f regulator rectifier has 2 wires coming out of it a red and black one, no matter what ohm setting i put the multimeter on it shows “0L “ but on the other wires that it plugs into “the stator connnection it shows a reading on the “20 ohm” setting. does that means that could be the cause of my NO SPARK situation , keep in mind this bike doesnt have a battery
I have a 3 phase rectifier on my 2014 BMW GS F 800 Adventure. Could you show how to test that one. Thanks
Hey all I got a gsxr 750 the problem I'm having is when the bike is cold starts every single time but when you ride for a bit and gets up to temperature If you stop and got to turn it off again it don't like starting iv changed the battery and starter motor I'm getting 12to 13 volts when off and 14 volts when it's started so power isn't a problem if you let the bike sit for 10 15 min it's starts again it's like something gets hot and don't like it and seems to turn over like a dead battery .anything else I could try thanks
hello, as you have shown, the regulator looks solid but no energy output, no voltage. The stator is newly clung and rugged, the outputs have ~ 50V. Is there another test method? motorhome Ktm duke 390 2016.
Thax good info
If i have 002 is it good cause when i rev the engine the voltage drop to 12.6 to 10-11volt
Does the rectifier deal with power to the headlights?? Can it cause no power to the headlights an high beam indicator??
I have just stuked with installing the ignition system of honda cd 90. I have disassemble every part of the engine and reassemble them after cleaning and applying lubricating oil on some parts.I am a self learner but now I have a trouble with installing ignition system. I set the statar and then I don't no hove set up wiring that are ahead on my proccess. I would be very much thankful for you to if you can help me to finish this work by giving me information that are required. I want to know how statar wires connect to the next component and what is that next component.then how the spark plug connect to the battery and what are the other component related to the ignition system that I want to be aware, such as mechanical breaker, coil .......I would be much oblidge if anyone can help me.!
Where is the regulator/rectifier located on a 150cc scooter exactly? This is my first scooter and it's become abit overbearing when it comes to doing my own repairs. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Great video. Can you make a video for 6pin rectifier pls.
My plug to the rectifier melted so i cut the wire and spliced it ..would that be consider a break in the wire and cause over charged to my battery ?
Hi sir My question is When the Burgman 650 bike is running for 2 minutes, it the regulator too hot to touch by hand? Is this temperature a problem or is it normal?
My daylight and taillight not working I check the bulbs and fuses everything was fine, but when I hit the pass light button on high beam they would come on.. help please
Can you replace a 2 phase stater with a 3 phase stator since i have a 3 phase rectifier?
I’m doing this test on a Linhai 2018 400cc UTV. It’s a brand new rectifier. The forward bias test (black lead to positive, testing connector with red lead) resulted in 530 on each connector. Way outside your proposed range of 0.3-0.5. So… what does this mean? I’m testing this because this rectifier gets super hot when in use.
hello i need help if my rading are 0.52 is a sign of broken regulator ?? they are a little bit more than 0.5
