Buonaserra Valentina thank you so much for the two lessons on identifying the gender of Italian nouns ending in "e". I have learned so much. As a native English speaker, I have to admit I never understood what a noun, adjective, or article was but having now watched and practiced your lessons I have not only learned about my own language but have now grasped how to identify the gender of Italian nouns ending in "e" . Perfetto Grazie Mille.

Ho visto il primo episodio sul gender e questo è stato un ottimo sequel. Mi piace che tu spieghi le regole in inglese, quindi possiamo capire chiaramente le regole e applicarle. Esempio: canale (masculine) = canal or channel.

The trap is that when I am going to say something, it's me who has to choose an appropriate form for every accompanying word. And I can't do that without already knowing the gender of the noun. So the tactics of quick guessing that you suggested works only for reading the text where accompanying words are already chosen and written by somebody else. :) But in this case why should I care about the gender of the noun (unless I am actually studying by reading this text)?

Good point. But developing the habit of noticing the accompanying words is going to train your brain to do that 2 things automatically (or at least more easily): memorizing the gender of the word when you learn it + paying attention to agreement when you speak. This is something that we also learn as native Italian kids, and it becomes second nature to us.

Un bicchiere vuoto Una buona mente Does the noun-adjective structure in Italian interchangeable? Is it Noun + Adj or Adj + Noun or can be both? I mean, can I say "Un vuoto bicchiere" or "Una mente buona"?

A good one that I think all Italians have used in school is the "Zingarelli", but it could be a bit expensive to get it outside Italy. A really good online dictionary is this one: www.sapere.it/sapere/dizionari/dizionari/Italiano/

Ottima domanda! Only if that word is an adjective. A noun has one assigned gender that never changes. If you are not clear about the difference between adjective and noun (which is absolutely common), please watch this other video of mine: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p5mm29WCZqzcmZc.html

Buonasera Valentina and thank you for all your videos. Can you tell me why the example of ‘a beautiful song’ in Italian has the adjective before the noun in this case? Are there particular occasions when this is so? Grazie mille 😊

  • @ItalianTeacherValentina

Bello and buono usually go before the noun. If you say "una canzone bella" it's not wrong, just with "bello" the language has developed in the direction of placing it before. Same with "buono". In general, adjectives that describe a noun go after the noun. I think I also explained this in my dedicated video about "bello", have you checked that out? ;)
