How to Tell the Difference Between Old World vs New World Wines

Have you ever heard anybody talk about Old World or New World wines? Do you have a clue what they’re talking about? In this video, Sommelier B. PIerre Asti highlights four key differences that will simplify this whole old world versus new world thing. The key differences are:
1. [1:40] Location: What do you mean by Old World and New world?
2. [2:41] Regulatory Differences: the rules for making wine
3. [4:44] Names and labels on the bottles
4. [7:14] Style of wine making / the taste difference

i find new world, especially French, to be thin, acidic and lacking everything i would call wine. More like vinegar than wine. I'm not going to wait 20 years for all the acid and tannins to mellow out.I will continue drinking our Aussie reds. Great video, and explains the old world's lacking.

Since there is no regulations in the New World, does "reserve" on the label on a California wine, for example, has any definite meaning other than the winemaker got it from a better vineyard? Would it mimic the Old World regulations?

I don't believe so. Most wineries do label their better wine reserve but not all reserves will be any good.

this is a good video however you are misinformed about the black rooster on the chianti bottle. Firstly, there is no village of chianti like you stated, it is the region between and surrounding florence and siena. Secondly, it isn't indicative of quality, simply locale. That DOCG label above the Gallo Nero is the indicator of quality much more-so than the rooster. According to the Chianti Classico Consortium website, since 2005 it has been used to represent all wines from the chianti classico region, not just the high quality ones.
