What the hell is even the point of giving this video a thumbs down? I see those on vids like this where there is nothing offensive, no mistreatment of the animal and the content is educational. The only thing I can think of is a bunch of ignorant people hate education? Anyways. Thanks for the vid.

Excellent advice! Those Silkies are just almost impossible for me. My very first batch was what was supposed to be 6 hens & a roo but it was the complete opposite lol.. The Farmer assured me he was rarely wrong for 40+ years on his chickens.. well... lol.. Silkies are just a whole other kind of hard to tell & I just go by behavior and that's pretty accurate but takes a while.

Kinda like someone trying gitaar first time. But this one have fluffy feathers down bottom rear end. I noticed young hens get that fluffy feathers when almost ready to start laying.

  • @MrAnimalFarm

    @MrAnimalFarm

    7 жыл бұрын

Hi, it is really pretty impossible to tell at a few days old unless: 1) You get them vent sexed which is typically only done at hatcheries. 2) It is an autosexing breed (you can tell by their color at hatch if they are male or female). 3) Some people have success with feather sexing. We have not used this before. My understanding is that only certain breeds can successfully be feather sexed. Some breeds you can start to tell sex faster. For example, the Marans in the video above. Since we breed these and see them all the time, we can usually start making good guesses around 4 weeks old and know for sure by 6 weeks. Some breeds, like Silkies are way harder. They have smaller walnut combs, and can be almost impossible to know until they are several months old.

If they have wing feathers, spread their wings out and a pullet, female, her feathers will be in a line across. This is so when she grows up and has babies, she can cover them easier. If the two rows of feathers at the edge are one long, one short one long one short pattern, that will be your cockerel, male chick. You can even use that when they are very young because they will have their feather shafts in the same pattern. To me, the feather way is the easiest and it works for all breads due to it being a poultry makeup for what a hen does and that is provide warmth and protection for her babies.

@@MsKala88 / @TheUtahraptor Channel, this can happen if one of her oviducts fail. Chickens can "change gender" from female to male due to hormone changes after the failure of one or both oviducts. The resulting cockerel will be sterile, but can serve the social purpose of a rooster (guarding for predators and keeping peace among the hens). Kind of the best of both worlds really.

No kangaroos in this video. Clickbait! Cockerels or Roosters. Not roos.

Roo is short for rooster. I think cockrell is an offensive name and term.

@@katrinawoody6268 LOL - be offended. They're cocks, cockrells, not roos, roos are what they call kangaroos in Australia. A rooster is a mature male bird. So even calling them a roo is incorrect.

Are you worried if you need to eat it up if the neighbors complain? It’s alright. There’s this way you can do by tying a collar or string around their neck, not too tight. Then they won’t annoy you and your neighbors. You welcome 😂

Day olds unless they are an autosexing breed (females are one color and males another), the only way to tell is through vent sexing which can be harmful to the chicks unless you know exactly how to do it. So, you will have to wait a little bit to tell.

I had a rooster that looked and acted like a hen but turned out to be a black pekin/bantam Cochin rooster, fairly calm and not to aggressive plus he gets along with my Porcelain D’uccle

I hatched my first ever, and it was so alert and spunky, I should have known it was a rooster. And surely, he is😂 At 3 months Paddy (3/17 hatch date) is as big as my 16 month olds!😮

All chickens have combs. Roosters combs are larger and develop sooner.

Thanks :-) We weren't holding it upside down. The camera angle does look like it, but we were just holding it sideways to check legs etc. Totally safe for a short timeframe :-)

My uncle taught me to pick up chicks by the base of the skull and let the body hang down. If it draws up its legs, it's a hen. If it leaves its legs extended its a Rooster. He had thousands of chickens on his farm. Along with a large herd of dairy cows, and hogs.

Misleading because ALL breeds aren’t the same and the grow & evolve differently… So using combs & wattles shouldn’t be used for sexing! You should pull your video or make sure you add the breeds you are using … Shame on you for misleading people!!!

@@MrAnimalFarm❤ I'M GLAD I FOUND YOUR VIDEO ❤ I think it's very helpful and well done. I googled difference between male/female Delaware chicks and got sent to yours, starting at 2 min in. Even tho wrong burd, I found useful info because I watched from the beginning. I hatched 9 and do notice the bigger feet, attitude and will note waddles, combs at 4 weeks just to see how it works out. I plan to color band what I think are males by observation, then its wait and see. 🎉
