It would be wonderful if at the end of every video you did a quick review of a book. Just an example like biscuit books, easy for reluctant readers, lots of word religion, sweet stories.

In 2nd grade this is a good practice for those who need the extra support. I find in that grade the reading levels differ drastically, so I’d use this in small individualized groups I’d say.

When should we teach short/long vowel sounds? I mean, when I need to explain the vowels have two sounds - short and long? You told the order: CVC words, digraphs, consonant blends, silent E, and in which period to teach the difference between short and long vowels? I do love your videos, they help me everytime when I teach kids to read! Thank you for your work!

Hi, Th is not a blend because those two letters together make one new sound. In a blend, the consonant letters keep their individual sounds, but they’re clustered together. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your video. Why do you teach blends at all since they are seperate sounds? Eg. /s/ /p/ /oo/ /n/ instead of /sp/ /oo/ /n/ It makes it really hard to manipulate PA skills if you have taught blends eg. Word ladders/chaining Just curious as I know a lot of people teach blends (consonant clusters) Teaching these blends may also be cognitive overload since we are also teaching individual sounds, digraphs, alternate vowels etc. Would love to hear your thoughts

Hi Melissa! Are you referring to the 1-page one with the reviewed skills at the top? If so, I only chose a few of them to review (I would only use these after having explicitly taught the skill) and it’s mostly for student to practice making those sounds and “putting them in their mouth” first so they’re ready to blend. I usually only review a few sounds at a time!

These strategies would most commonly be used with K-2 students. It is something I would explicitly teach in a first grade classroom all the time, but also with Kinder and 2nd grade students in small groups as needed!
