My trainer taught me to look at their shoulders and turn with them and then when you want them to slow down you look at their hindquarters and raise the rope straight up in the air and then they turn their hindquarters in so they are facing you and then they stop and wait for you to give any more signals

Please do more training videos with your donkeys. I have trained many horses, but donkeys have their own way of doing things. I am getting a 2 yr old former guard ( pasture) donkey ready to be my pack and hiking buddy. Your tips are very helpful.

When the horse or donkey is behind you, you aren't giving them direction or watching them so they think they can do what they want and thats kind of why you need to turn with them. You shouldn't be walking around just pivoting in the same spot

Actually. I was taught once they get to the advanced level of training you can absolutely stand in one spot. My horse does this and takes cues from a tilt of my head when to stop and disengage.

I feel like it would be best if you could get the to learn an follow directions without constant pressure and admire that ..

i don't mean constant pressure you're just giving them direction with your hand out like pointing to them where they need to go. you don't need a whip or anything you only put pressure by swinging the rope if you ask them to move up a gait and they aren't listening.

yes but trying to lunge while not even facing your horse isn't going to end well when you re getting them to do other things like canter. the horse should always be watching you and asking what to do next. They will just get confused if you're not even facing them

What would you do if a donkey is not sensitive to the whip at all?

g'day Mandy, start with basic communication, using pressure and release. try tapping with a training stick not a whip. Steady firm but not harsh tap tap tap on the rump and even a tiny shift in his weight or an ear forward, you stop. then tap tap tap again and any slight move forward with a foot movement even if he doesn't take a step forward yet. Then stop tapping. you have to reward him for trying (by stopping the annoying tapping) or he will stop trying. Don't get mad or give up, just tap repetitively until he gets annoyed enough to do SOMETHING in response to the tapping. and you can try to find a different area like a hock or tickle under the flank or somewhere that gets a reaction, so you sensitise him to moving away from the repetitive annoying tapping. Then you have communication that you want him to do something, and he has to work out what you want him to do. Only do this until he moves 2 or 3 times then stop. Try again the next day and the next and he will start to understand. After that, you can gradually get him used to responding to the cues. All the best. maybe look up clicker training too, there is a lot of info out there.

My male donkey looks pregnant. But he REFUSES to do more than a VERY slow walk. I have to exercise him, its getting a unhealthy!! I don't have a round pen, but he lives with our goats. Although when we take him out, he gets extremely distracted by our female donkey. I struggle to get get him to back up, he has no respect!!!! HELP!!!!! ( his name is Rhett )

i would recommend you take Rhett and do a course in natural horsemanship. (3 days) I did a couple of courses about 15 years ago, had to borrow a float and save up to afford it, but it was the best thing i ever did. Also read books about donkeys and figure out what is going to work for him and you. You can learn some tips here and there on youtube, but basically you get what you pay for. if Rhett is a jack, i'm not sure that is safe for you. Same reason not everyone should have a stallion. There are no quick fixes sorry. Relationships and respect take time and knowledge.

Mutts and Meows try doing pole exercises with 4 poles in that slow walk and slowly widen the pole gap. Keep exercising him until he gets to a jog or trot your choice. You can keep using the end of your rope and swing it clockwise to tell him to speed up. Once he’s done around 8 poles at once start with 4 again and as 2 or three poles as a group. It should pick up his feet. Before you do any pole exercises make sure you can lung him to a steady trot so run at him a little bit if he doesn’t speed up. After trying around 10 to 15 of the grouped poles at once, raise single poles around 2 to 3 feet apart from each other, 3 to 5 inches of the ground. Try doing 4 raised poles at a trot and call it a day. Try doing that every other day for 2 weeks and eventually every day for a week than take 5 days off. Repeat the process with proper, limited food for around half a year and he should be healthy! Make sure by the end of the 6 months he can lunge nicely at a canter and do the pole exercises at a canter. This should be a positive activity that will help create a stronger relationship with the donkey instead of sending it away. Have fun!

Mutts and Meows I forgot to add the exercises should last approximately 90 to120 minutes.
