How to Teach a Class You're Not Prepared For

Sometimes you'll get the call that you're going to teach a class that you've never taught before NOR you have any professional training in. Maybe you don't even feel qualified to teach the class at all.
Here's a few things I did when I had to teach 8th grade physical science for the first time.
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 Not feeling qualified
1:14 Step 1 - Start with the syllabus
2:18 Step 2 - Join Facebook groups
4:07 Step 3 - Experiment, then stick with what saves time & works
6:03 Step 4 - Do the assignments you give to the kids
8:09 Step 5 - Be candid with the students...to an extent

Hello, I’m not sure if you’ll get this or not. But wanted to say thank you for this video. I know you’re not in teaching anymore and I congratulations on moving onto a step up but I’m teaching technology to six graders and also seventh and eighth graders and I’ve been googling and racking my brain for a curriculum because the school does not have one that’s a smaller town, and within your first few minutes of this video it just gave me the right clue to search a Google and Bam. I have two resources with curriculum ideas and units and now my whole world is changed because I’m a first year teacher and I did not know how to teach technology. I knew some basic parameters, but it led me to resources where I will be in good hands. So thank you again for everything you’ve put into your craft and profession, so that the rest of us can benefit.

Right on! Find ways to bring your passion for theater into your other classes as well. It'll make the class more fun for both you and the students b/c YOU'LL be excited and kids need teachers excited to be in the classroom.

Thanks, Thom, for all the teaching videos you have made and all the tips and resources you have shared. I have been watching a few videos of yours periodically to help with teaching journey. I have been learning a lot from you even though we teach totally different subjects. I teach Mandarin as a world language.

When I worked in schools, I was often given the side show documents or teaching plans of a certain course and was expected to be able to teach immediately without preparation. I said, "I still need to adjust it. I can't use it for my class directly", but few people understand me... I thought I was the one with something wrong. ""Maybe something is wrong with my ability. Why I can not do what everyone else does" I would think this way. Maybe this is just the general culture of my society and I happen to be the odd one.

Being able to prioritize topics in a subject, presenting them in a logical sequence, knowing how much detail to cover, and setting the pace of the course can all be challenging when teaching a subject for the first time. Students can smell a phony, so you had better budget time for preparation.
