HOW TO TEACH A 1-YEAR-OLD | Homeschool Routine for a 1 Year Old (12-15 Months)
HOW TO TEACH A 1-YEAR-OLD // Homeschool Routine for a 1 Year Old (12-15 Months)
Looking for ideas for how to teach a 1-year-old? In this video, I'm sharing my "homeschool" routine for a 1-year-old (more specifically, toddlers 12-15 months). This is a VERY basic and relaxed, child-led, play-based homeschool "curriculum," which focuses on 5 major areas of development (fine motor skills, gross motor skills, language development, cognitive development and social-emotional development).
*Disclaimer* Always closely supervise your child during all of these activities as they may contain choking hazards.
⭐️ Tip! Make a Visual Schedule to help your little one know what to expect throughout the day!⭐️

Welcome to Pocketful of Parenting (formerly The Innovative Momma)! I’m Jess - a Parenting Coach, Certified Positive Discipline Educator, former preschool/kindergarten teacher & momma!
Parenting is TOUGH - especially in the early years where the sleep is little and the feelings are BIG. My mission is to help reframe the idea of the “terrible twos,” “threenagers,” and “fournados” to help parents LOVE LIFE WITH LITTLES!
I provide science-based information on your child’s developing brain to help you gain a better understanding and form a deeper connection with your little one. I’ll also be sharing tools you can use to help your child get through their big emotions while keeping your cool in the process. (Say “bye-bye” to yelling, bribes, threats & punishments!)
You’ll also find easy play activities to help support your child’s development across multiple areas, such as: fine and gross motor skills, cognitive development, social-emotional development, and language development.

I'm a solopreneur working from my home office with 3 days per week, fulltime 24 hour care of my 15 month old grand daughter. Mom and dad both work long hours Sunday through Wednesday so I gladly have the "home school" regimen down to a T. Thanks for sharing. There are several great tips I will put to use right away. Yay so glad! Thanks so much for sharing! And it totally doesn’t have to be super structured, but starting to get your child used to a little routine can definitely help them get used to what to expect throughout their day! Enjoy and have fun! 😊
This is helpful. My 18 month old does some of these but I noticed he’s been watching more tv . Definitely getting him into a flexible routine like this will allow for us to do more activities and watch less tv. Thanks

Hi Nesha! I'm so glad this video helped! I know how overwhelming it gets being home with littles all of the time. A very loose routine definitely helps! And don't feel guilty! We go through seasons when sometimes we just need things like TV for our kids just to keep our sanity! I had my second baby in September and completely fell out of this routine and felt totally guilty that my son was watching so much TV too, so I feel you! When it comes to items and activities, I have some other videos that may help you get a better idea of what I'd recommend, but you can do so much with what you already have at home! Here are some videos that may help. @tkeylove3148 Thanks! So glad you enjoyed! Here is my affiliate link to the table: geni.us/D2MBKb . When it comes to timing, there really is no set time for everything. I'd just recommend following your child's lead with how interested they are in each thing you do. Some days it will take longer because they'll be more interested, and some days they may want nothing to do with ANY of the activities - and that's perfectly okay! The biggest thing to remember at this age is to provide multiple opportunities for them to play and explore on their own with lots of safe, age-appropriate materials. Hope this helps! Thanks for being here! 😊

Thanks! Around this age, we loved touch and feel books or anything interactive (like lift-the-flap books). Also, shorter books with more simple story lines to hold those short attention spans. But be sure to read a variety of books and pay attentions to what your little one shows an interest in! 😊
This is an excellent and very helpful video. I have been a nanny for four years now. Recently I have been taking care a six months old baby girl. Myself been in childcare field over 20 years plus. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching. When it comes to routines, 6 months is definitely not too young for a very LOOSE routine. Having things like naps, playtime and feedings on a schedule will definitely help develop structure and routine, even at a young age. You can definitely have targeted “areas” that you explore with her during your time together, but be sure to follow her lead. For example, for movement, you can lay her down (or sit her up if she can) and hold out a toy while you encourage her to reach for it, or put on some upbeat movement and try and encourage her to move her arms and legs. The main thing is to follow her lead, interests and cues. If she shows interest in what you’re doing, keep going. If she keeps turning her head and looking away or acting uninterested, move on. Setting up a safe environment for her to explore while you sit back and observe and supervise is an awesome way for her to learn too! I hope this helps! Thank you for being here! ❤️

This is so great! I have a 14mo old and I have a loose structure like this to help him maximize his learning but nothing like this! So glad I found this channel. One question: how do you get him from not getting into all the other things in the room/ class environment? We have toys stashed away in trunks and try to do a toy rotation with his toys so he’s not overwhelmed. Is it just a matter of continuous redirecting?

I'm so glad you found it helpful! Love that you're doing a toy rotation already! That is so helpful for keeping interest and preventing overwhelm and clutter! When it comes to not getting into the other things, I try to create a "yes" space where my kids play as much as possible - meaning what I have in their reach I'm okay with them accessing at any time. For the other supplies and tools, I have 4 tall cabinets in the playroom that have child locks on them, so I keep all of my supplies and toys that I don't want my kids to continually access in there, out of reach and locked away. I totally understand not everyone has the space or ability to have this setup, that's just what works best for us - but I would recommend trying to find a system to keep things put away that you don't want to be accessed by your little one at any time. Much less exhausting than trying to redirect constantly! This helps them to have a safe, child-friendly environment to freely explore and learn in! I hope this helps! Thanks for being here. 😊💗

Does anyone know the best :tape, glue, or stickers for hanging number posters on the walls without damage or falling off after 24hrs???

So I used to use this 3M foam double-sided tape in my classroom, which I use at home too. It works really great and the stuff won't budge. I haven't experienced any damage to my walls but I do sometimes have to scrape off the tape with a flat tool if some gets stuck on the wall. Worth it if you're thinking of keeping stuff up for a while, in my opinion! Here's the tape : amzn.to/44eu27d

My 12 month old can already walk and just loves to destroy things right now =) How can I get his attention and get him to sit still for a little bit? He doesn’t really play with us the way your baby does.
@PocketfulofParenting
2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes! The fun REALLY begins now! 😄 This is totally normal. Their attention span is super short at that age and they are wanting to explore big time with their new mobility - and that includes destroying things (unfortunately for us 😂). They’re learning all about cause and effect and how things work in the world. Start by seeing what he gravitates to when he goes to play and try interacting with him with whatever he chooses. You can then start trying to encourage different “activities” as he gets used to this. Simply providing different things to play with and explore (even safe common household items, like pots, bowls or spoons) is a perfect activity. It’s honestly just trial and error and finding what catches their attention. Every child is different when it comes to this. I hope this helps! Keep it up! ❤️

@chemay_loves9553 If you purchase the pack, you’ll see there is an option to print 4 to a page or single letters to a page. I believe I did the single option and changed my printer settings to print 2 to a page, so they’re each half a sheet of paper (horizontally). Hope this helps! 🩷

Do you have any advice for a 15 month old who doesn’t like to sit still or listen or talk with me? She’s very independent and watches tv a lot because I’m juggling chores but she’s not interested in play helping out with things like putting away little rags and “folding” and anytime I try to play with her she gets upset and when I read to her she rips the book out of my hands and doesn’t want to read. Is this normal? She loves to selectively hear me as well so she doesn’t really converse with me. Is there a way to get her attention? She’s always been like this and I want to get her away from the tv so I can enjoy playing with her. She’s just not interested in me at all😥

Hey! You are doing awesome! Parenting is the toughest job and can cause us to think or worry about EVERYTHING when it comes to our little ones! (Trust me, I totally feel this!) That being said, it’s important to remember that every child develops at a different pace and has his/her own personality, likes and dislikes - even when they’re little! I’m not anti-screen time at all, but if you’re afraid the TV is causing her to become uninterested in other things, maybe try scaling back the time she watches each day. After TV time is over, you could try moving her into another room without a TV and trying to engage her in some activities. I’d definitely keep trying new things with her. Also, don’t get discouraged if she doesn’t seem into something when you first present it to her - sometimes it takes a couple of times before kids start to explore something new. At 15 months, she’s still pretty young. As for the books, maybe try leaving them in her play area and seeing if she goes for them on her own rather than you presenting them to her. If she does start to interact with them, maybe try talking about the pictures and pointing out things you see. When it comes to language development, my biggest piece of advice is to talk to her ALL OF THE TIME, even if she’s not talking back. Point out the things you see around the house and when you’re out and about. Modeling language is very important in order for your little one to learn how to talk and converse with you. As always, if you’re concerned about your child’s development, I always recommend bringing it up to your pediatrician. I hope this helps a bit! Best of luck! 💗

Start by speaking to her pediatrician or family doctor about your concerns. You are right that this is unusual behavior for a 15 month old. Toddlers are curious and busy, even the quiet ones. Talk to your Dr. to rule out any developmental delays and take it from there. All the best.

Thank you so much for these tips. My son is 14M+ and he is still putting everything in his mouth (except food😢) and I find it really difficult to do most of the activities with him, he will nibble and gobble on his own mode and not care about what I try to make him do 🫠 and he is not yet eating by himself yet. Can you please help me 😢

This is so hard! I have a video on taste-safe sensory activities that may help. You can find it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpuNyrhmpafWgrw.htmlsi=5NgwOGCxOsvlHxYb If you choose to do these, I would closely supervise him and still discourage him from putting them in his mouth, but at least if he does they are “taste safe”. Please note that this is a totally normal part of development and the age for when they stop “mouthing” things varies. My second son still put non-food items in his mouth until after 2 years old. Also, please keep in mind that these activities are just an idea. What matters is where your child’s interests are. Follow your son’s lead - it’s that simple! Simply setting up a safe environment where he can explore items freely is one of the best things you can do to support him at this stage. Hope this helps. ❤️

Any advice on how to do this if my MIL comes to watch my 14 month old from9am-1 while I work from home ??
@PocketfulofParenting
25 күн бұрын
Hey! I would totally explain some of this to your MIL if you think she’s open to it - the main point of this video is to help you get a very loose and flexible routine down with your little one while keeping the areas of child development in mind. At this age, they are motivated to be self-explorers by nature and are always learning, so definitely don’t think too much into it. If you want to pick one “guided” activity a day to set your MIL up with, that may be helpful. Again, nothing at this age should be super structured or rigorous, so even taking out some books, or a specific toy (like blocks if you want to build cognitive/fine motor skills) may be helpful! Hope this helps! Best of luck. ❤️

My baby tries to eat the crayons/markers when I color with him. How do I get him to stop doing this?
@PocketfulofParenting
Жыл бұрын
It can be so frustrating at times when this happens, but it’s completely developmentally appropriate for them! Babies have tons of very sensitive nerve endings in their mouth, which is why they explore objects in this way. When my son was still in this stage and I wanted to do an activity like this with him, I’d take the crayon out of his mouth and say something like “crayons are for coloring” and then place my hand over his and scribble on the paper with the crayon. Lots of repetition and modeling how to use the crayon. Over time, this will go away - but until then just keep him under very close supervision and keep modeling and talking about how to use crayons. Hope this helps! ❤️
My one year old would eat those gatorade lids and small legos. How do you do it without worry of him choking?
@PocketfulofParenting
Жыл бұрын
I only would take them out under EXTREMELY close supervision. If he went to put one in his mouth I would physically move his hand and verbally tell him and show him where to put the lid. Sometimes it takes a lot of repetition! If you ever don’t feel comfortable with an activity, put it away. Always better to be safe and do what you’re comfortable with when it comes to your own child!
