As a former youth coach with a 2 time NL all star and D1 player MVP and several D2 players. I applaud your teaching methods. All teaching needs to be positive at this age. Also introduction to the mental game on what to do with ball in the field. Most coach do not know how to teach the game properly. A whole series of instructional for adults to teach all aspects of the game would really be beneficial to coach’s all all ages.

I started teaching my son to catch when he was age 3. But to get him to learn to catch in his off-hand, I had him just hold a baseball hat. Essentially, I’d underhand toss a ball to him (close up) and he got used to letting it land in the hat he held in his left hand. He’d then pick it out with his right hand to me, and toss it to MY off hand (which had a glove). We did this a long long time before he got his own glove, but by then he wanted a glove and was ready to catch in his off hand, and throw with his right. I wish I’d seen this video years ago, but we will still incorporate some now, like the double ball exercise.

These videos have been amazing for keeping him interested and excited about baseball. He has improved VASTLY since we first started watching the hitting video a few months ago. This is excellent. The tip to not try to correct a kid when they miss a ball or make a bad throw is huge. Keep it fun. Kids can be extremely hard on themselves as it is - then to receive critical feedback immediately can add more pressure and make them feel worse. I'm guilty of this myself, and it's something I'll be more mindful of. Positive reinforcement is huge.

That was my husband last year in our first year playing and his first year coaching (tee ball)…!!! Our team ended up winning our league championship and went to the state tournament! But-My son ended up being one of the worst players on the team because he didn’t like dad coaching him. By the state tournament he was so happy to sit in the dugout and be the extra hitter (which is the one thing he was good at and didn’t want to give up trying). Being the problem solver I am and knowing my husband was going to be the head coach again this year, I started searching KZread for ways to get my kid re-interested and to get my husband to finesse that interest instead of impede (or reverse) it, and I found Matt’s KZread videos! I loved his style and could tell his son never had baseball forced upon him, and it doesn’t seem like he likes it just because his dad likes it either- they just enjoy the game together! And it all boils down to how he handles his son’s wins and fails and doesn’t criticize him. I wish ALL coaches COULD be like this, so many young young players wouldn’t quit, but some coaches just can’t keep their mouths shut and think it’s better to nitpick every single move every kid makes, especially their own. I ended up sending my husband a few of the videos “for good coaching tips”, and I’m pretty sure he watched the whole channel. This year my son has been like a completely different player- he played pitcher and first and was one of the leaders of the team! Now he asks us to go out into the yard to play, instead of us having to ask him to come outside to practice. Antonelli Baseball needs to link up with the Leagues in making required educational coaching videos for all coaches to watch before the first practice!!

I don't know if you've ever studied education, but I think you're a better teacher than a lot of those who do it for a living. I'm a school teacher, for reference. You talked about the frustration point, which is something I think not enough people pay attention to. They know they're messing up, there's no need to belabor the point. Encouragement is one of the most effective growth tools, just like frustration is one of the most effective ways to lose all progress. Keep it up, Matt!

Thanks! Never studied education, but have coached a lot of kids over the years and also watch a lot of other people coach kids, so been learning on the job

Love the catching drill progression. Would really be interested to get your thoughts on throwing, too. Your son has great form but a lot of kids struggle with dropping the elbow or shotputting, and that's been tough to work through as a dad and a coach.

First practice tomorrow , coach pitch , my daughter is 1 of 2 girls on my team , lack of interest canceled softball coach pitch fall ball so I signed her up for baseball coach pitch , she's 6 , she consistently hits line drives but I'm having hard time getting her to catch ball... your boy is man good. That was cool to watch.

This video is awesome, just found your channel and will be watching other videos. Do you have a particular glove and size you like for this age? My son is 7 1/2. Thanks!

Matt, parents in my town are teaching their kids to catch by holding the back of their glove. Kids end up with both elbows pointing out to the side, and all their fingers pointing toward their midline. I don't get it. I'm not sure who started this, I've struggled to break this habit with almost every kid I've coached. I'm wondering if this is happening elsewhere, but it's great to see a video like this!

Thanks! He will get it. My son has really loved playing catch even before he could walk, so he’s been working at it for a while. Good luck!

When I was about 6 my dad started to teach me baseball but I was scared of handling grounders. So he started to hit tennis balls at me. Easy at first then harder and harder until I got confident and lost my fear and then it was baseballs.
