Here's a tip if you use 60% or 65% mechanical keyboard use only 2 layers of mtx tape but if you have 70% 80% 100% use 3 layers of tape only don't go 4 tape or else it wouldn't work

@@BigDomDaddy no not at all thats actually ok as long as you dont use any other tape than masking tape because masking tape are thin so 3 layers is actually good it makes the sound way better and deeper also poppy sound

@@BigDomDaddy i use 60% mechanical keyboard i used 3 layers of thin mtx musking tape it sounds so good and poppy 3 layers of thin tapes is actually good for 60% 65% but dont use other tape for 60% 65% 3 layers of thick tape problems are 1. Motherboard cant fit to the case 2. Keys wont work because the tape is too thick for the keys 3. Thick tapes can damage your motherboard 4. Thick tapes actually makes the keyboard sound not good like its a super deep like silent keyboard

For anyone wondering the keyboard is Glorious keyboard with a polycarbonate plate switches Im not sure but sounds like gateron black maybe not too sure though but its sounds amazing also have the same keyboard and typing on it is amazing and addicting

Yeah I did 2 mods on an r68 keyboard, it sounded good when it came but I modded it and now it sounds like a really high end keyboard

Unclear directions my keyboard is now a nuclear reactor

Would it work if i taped the tape to itself (essentially creating a layer insert instead of an attach-on) so that no faces are sticky, or is the whole point of taping the pcb so that the direct contact assists the dampening/cushioning?

Late, but, i think the stickiness helps, like how snow makes eveything quiet. Keeps sound in. Would be same as 2 layers of reg. way tape

I'm going to try this as soon as I find out which sort of tape I'm supposed to use.

Just modded Hyper x Alloy Origins 65%t some hours ago it feels amazing, it feels poppy and in general amazing. I really like it. But the problem was making the holes, it was the hardest part.

My phantom 87 with graywood v3s and 3 layers of painters tape plus a layer of duct tape sounds so good

Every keyboard can be modded actually.. The only difference is that hot swappable is easier to remove the switches rather than spending huge time by soldering those so if you have non hot swappable which means you'll find it no difference when taping it because you're clearly removing the keyboard parts so at that same point you can remove your switches from there too

I’m worried about something going wrong cause I have a type writer styled does it work with that and what does the ports look like

hi tycottle, thanks for the content. i have keychron q5 pro. and i want to use tape mod as well. people said you should use painters tape because it wont leave a residue so i purchased a good brand. now im checking web again to be %100 sure however some people said battery might got heated and tape could catch on fire. however my painter tape has high heat resistance (80 degree celcius - 176 fahrenheit) can i use this painter tape? i never feel my keyboard is hot, it'll always cold with aluminium frame and i never turn on rgb also. should i buy electrical tape which could leave residue but i guess it wont catch on fire or painter tape is good/better? lastly if i use painter tape mod. how many layers i should apply, 3,4,5? and should i apply tape to whole pcb or should i leave some parts open, is there a thing i should be careful?

Is it safe to use painters tape though? I saw a video of ClickandSwitch doing 7 mods. She said she almost started a fire using painter's tape and it's safer to use electrical tape if there is a battery.

You should be doing this on the bottom of the pcb so the stabilizers shouldn't be affected

Non conductive tape like painters tape or masking tape. Also avoid using the battery with these mods

just remove keycap then you can already unscrew the case screw, and don't forget to check for under the rubber pad screw and yeah, my K617 reddragon switch is quite hard to pull too probably should buy the better keycap+switch puller not the stock one, I bent the plastic house and broke some latch, but as long as the pin connect it still works like normal you can test the keyboard on some keyboard test website after

don't worry, tape doesn't interfere at all with the switch press the mod are on the backside of the pcb (board) as long as the switch pin connects to the pcb board, the keyboard will work. the switch still click internally

- be aware that if you want to undo this, it could leave sticky residue from the tape that are a hassle to remove (personally I don't care of some inside residue but some people care, try using isopropyl alcohol to clean it) - usually don't need to remove the switches just the keycaps and screw, as long as you can open the case and access the back / base of the pcb (board) - sometimes there're under rubber pad screw, so don't force the case open - don't tape the screw hole - don't tape any port - could leave the capacitor alone or still tape it - if have battery use electrical tape (to prevent short they said) - if have battery take care not to break the battery cable plug / solder when opening case

It’s better not to apply tapes cuz the base gets sticky and mess. With that, dust can just stick to the components and it’ll be very hard to clean

Can someone explain why my keyboard(Royal Kludge Rk61) broke when I did the tape mod. I used painters tape and I tapped the back of the mother board and put it all back together but the keyboard just stopped responding

could be shorted, that's why people advice using electrical tape for keyboard with battery otherwise check battery cable, try replugging it, check if the type-C Port is not bent
