Learning tap was my secret childhood dream. I just ordered a pair of tap shoes ($20.00 on amazon) and I've got a nice hardwood floor in my living room. So what if I'm 54 years old? I'm going to learn how to tap dance and NOTHING is going to stop me. I've waited long enough

Tap shoes will naturally stretch over time, but if your shoes are uncomfortably small, it might be best to try a size up.

One thing that really helps get into the tap dance mindset: start your improv with a limited movepool. See what you can do with only heel drops and toe taps. Experiment with rhythm, repetition, pauses, and everything else. Then you can add shuffles and flaps to drastically increase your perimeters before even touching the 'fancy' stuff.

I decided to learn to tap myself just a month ago! I've never taken a dance lesson in my life and had horrible fear of failing. Luckily, our instructor has taught all levels of dancers and she's got the patience of a saint. We're learning the Coles Stroll and once we get to the end of it, everybody that was in step is now out of rhythm. I can only imagine what my teacher is thinking about the cacophony of hoofing foot noise knowing that she knows how it ~SHOULD~ sound. I actually start giggling so hard I loose my rhythm because the sound is so awful and hilarious. It goes from this beautiful syncopated sound to cows stomping in a barn :-) I've been taking lessons for 4 weeks and am loving it! I decided to put in a small dance floor in my garage (I bought snap together tiles for tap dancing and foam underflooring - the first 2 weeks I tapped on concrete *laugh*), am adding a flat screen TV with a DVD player which will be here tonight (oh boy!) so I can watch DVD's , KZread videos (I bought a cable to connect my phone to the TV), and my teacher (who let's me record her) and practice at home every night in a warm garage during the cold Oregon winters. I love finding people that have posted these videos, especially for those of us new to tap. So you get at it girl and don't look back - your body will thank you. I can only hope it gives you as much joy as it has for me. I'm unapologetically addicted.

@@ariel-4131 It's so worth it. It keeps the reflexes strong, and rewires our brains I'm finding. Just the act of doing something so new to our bodies is phenominal brain chemistry. Give it a go! I took the plunge and am just loving it. I'm frustrated because I don't have any sense of really fast speed, but then my friends laugh and remind me that these dance experts have been doing this for ~years~ so I need to stop putting pressure on myself to be perfect 4 weeks into lessons.😆

So, I decided I wanted to go back to the classroom. The way you take this step by step (no pun intended ) and really focus on where one's feet and posture should be helps tremendously :) I love tap dancing so much and feel it's becoming a lost art form.

Watching this was excellent! I took tap dance when I was 5. I took it for 2 years from the same fabulous teacher. I’m seen in every home movie tapping away. I must have driven my Mom crazy. 😅 Throughout the years I’ve bought myself nice tap shoes and started tapping again. It’s never lasted long. Watching your instruction gives me goosebumps! I feel like I could attempt it yet again with more success this time. I’m older now. (Waay older.) However, I still dance every day in some form or another. More like “Elaine” on Seinfeld. Lol , but I still love to dance like nobody’s watching. BTW, nobody is watching. 😂 My point is I’m still in great shape and still dancing. As I sit here and type this, I realize I’ve been dancing all of my life. I was an exotic dancer in my 30’s for a few years in the winter time because I did road construction and got layed off in the winter. So I was a dancer in a GO-GO club. The money was excellent! Anyway, I do go on. I’m ordering tap shoes today! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 I want to learn Flamenco dancing too! If you’ve read all of this, Thank you! I hope your day is filled with magic moments. Watching this video has certainly brightened my day n given me something to look forward to. I’m now your student of tap dance. 💃🏽💝✨🌎✨💝💃🏽

@@taptopiaofficial you might like to know that three of my four sons all tap danced when they were kids. The youngest of those three was 3 years old when he started and he's now 45. He works in intelligence at the Pentagon now, but when he was three he brought the house down and the people out of their seats he was so cute. Thank god, a youtube tap tutorial that talks about the importance of loose ankles from the word go. And starting out with toe heels (probably the most underapreciated step in tap that connects almost any combo or rhythm you have) Well done.

What a great demonstration. I took tap classes many years ago as a young adult, my tap shoes are still in my cupboard (!) and I would really like to take classes again. Growing up in a small conservative town, there were dance teachers who taught tap, but in those days it wasn't the thing that boys did. 😢 It's a wonderful form of exercise and of course being able to tap dance is just the greatest! You have inspired me.🤩

Awesome. I finally got my tap shoes out today and did a little tap in our backyard. I haven’t tapped properly since I was 8, although I did buy myself some tap shoes a few years ago and hardly used them as I had to have a knee op. I’m now 63 and your video is just what I need whilst self isolating. I’m going to start at the beginning and learn to tap again. My goal is to go and tap outside my grandchildren’s home one day in the next few weeks. I may not be able to hug them right now or see them but I can eventually tap for them. Thank you so much. Keep well. Happy day from Australia
