1/ Take care of yourself 2/ Take care of the team. The teachers are a PART of the team. Listen 1st. Ask Questions. Thank the teachers. Stay factual. 3/ Love your kids. Advocate for them, but Don't alienate the teachers. 4/ Discipline your kids p.s. my personal take: it's all mostly great advice, but in the kid's interest , lets remember that some teachers are NOT on your team, but can be real enemies that destroy kids. This should be squarely addressed. I've seen many kids lose their way because of BAD teachers, principals, etc. Disclosure: Aside from being a parent myself, I'm a former public school teacher. Way too many teachers are burnt out and lack commitment.

101, we want to make the assumption that teachers are on our team until we are proven otherwise, then we go to the administration.

My oldest is 27 and my youngest is eight years old going to the same district. My eight year old is the last one I need to raise coming out to find the same elementary. Districk has been changed. I’ve had a nice talk with the teacher on her looks intimidating and the miss treatment. I’ve given her over and over the benefit of the doubt until my daughter started to cry couldn’t sleep did not want to go to school. . But this video is crap !!

How do you talk to an incompetent teacher to help your child? Cause there are teachers that are giving service to children while most of them sees the job as just a paycheck.

Apple Zshena, I would start with the teacher, then if you think he or she is not responding as they should or doing what they said, I would follow up with an administrator.

Most of the time I have a great connection with my kids teachers. I ask once a week how they're doing , if there is a problem. The last teacher of my daughter (mother of an autistic child) gave me many tips on how to help her focus. When my children were so tight that they could not make friends, I talked to the teachers and my children and we came to the compromise that they only play together during one break. she also helped my daughter find better contact to her classmates. But sometimes I had to stand up for my kids and said them that something isn't ok. ( In Pre school one teacher don't let my daughter go to the toilet during the class and she told her she has to go in the break...not ok with a 5 years old... She has to pee in her pants. Or in another one told my daughter she can't were that scarf, because it isn't part of the Uniform, but they don't have one for the Uniform). My kids know, that I will work with them, BUT I stand always behind my children

Hi live on purpose My daughter changed her school recently because she was bullied by kids and teacher yelled at her. It all started when she came back home saying teacher make fun of the way she talks. Once we made a complain the teacher started to isolate her from other kids, my daughter would come back home saying the teacher shouts too much at her. I told my husband he should talk to the teacher instead the principal. After 1 month we decided to move her coz things got worse she would be pushed and come home with bruises on her shoulders. She is now in this school for 2 weeks. She would come home saying teacher shouted at her she would say don’t talk in class, you don’t have manners however I honestly feel when I mention her teacher she feels happy or at least not hating her. Today I went to pick her up I found out she was out and it was 90 degree and they didn’t put sunblock on. She was supervised by two teachers that aren’t hers. Then I saw all kids soppy cups outside since it was really hot. I told her let us move out and get your soppy cup. I found out she didn’t have it outside I was so down :( Then I saw on her face a bruise that look like a scratch and I wanted to get so mad on these careless teachers but I said maybe it was just colors. However when we left I found it is not, she told me she fell on her face while sliding down. I honestly feel so down no one informed me about this accident and i also feel so sad they didn’t notice my daughter didn’t take her sippy while heading outside. Do I need to approach this situation to her class teacher? I’m afraid because sometimes her non-class teacher watch my daughter class after 4:00 pm and sometimes I pick her up late. I honestly feel afraid when I complain she would be happy in this school and I’m so shy idk how to open the conversation up.

Start with what you like about the school and then go from there. Let them know that you appreciate all they do, but as a favor, could they please watch out for (and list here what you would like them to do.)

I would tell her that I would appreciate the entire story when she has something to report.

There's a whole lot of teachers are bullying the kids. I have tried to work with the teachers but they're bullying my child

Maria, if you feel it is not encouragement, but bullying, you can talk to admin.

This is good advice, but when you’re about to talk to a teacher who has failed in their duty of care for your child it can be difficult to ‘be grateful’. However, I will lead the conversation with a positive, and take it from there. Some teachers aren’t there for the love of what they do, and that is unfortunate.

I love how you say that the teacher is part of the team. I'm a teacher and a parent of 3 and I love this video. Remember it really is in the teacher's best interest that the classroom dynamics are working. So even if the teacher isn't "on your side" from the get go (we all have bad days) they will be very soon if they feel like you are trying to solve a situation and not just there to blame and be angry. I am feeling really nervous because I feel infuriated with the way my son has been disciplined in his 2nd grade class and I'm totally lost on how to deal with this situation. I am really grateful for this video because now I feel a lot more relaxed and feel like I can handle addressing this situation with the teacher in a more positive way that will be best for everyone involved. Thank you so much for this. If I didn't see this video first, I could have handled this situation poorly.

My child is 5 years old very smart started reading at the age of 2 and is on the stage of reading a whole story she can write as well very creative and ask a lot of questions and also very restless and energetic. My problem is with the teachers who think my child has behaviour and wanted her to be observed by a special needs teacher and are bothering me a lot they reached to the point of accusing my child screaming and hitting others when she’s very friendly and playful on the outside of the school this issue comes only from the class. My child never lay her hand on others. I don’t know what to do. I’m scared of my child’s future ruined. Any advice?

Default Green, that is a big topic. I would get help from an adult, anything you do could be turned against you and you could be in trouble. Best to avoid and alert the authorities when there is an altercation.

My son is 2 1/2 and he starts school sep 9th. He has spina Bifida and needs to be cathed every 4 hours. I'm worried and nervous if he's going to be safe or are people going to be nice to him, is the nurse gonna cath him on time and properly & ect. His teacher called me yesterday telling me I won't have a home visit from her because I live in a different district but he has had teachers come to visit before so I kinda felt upset because I was looking forward to that and everyone else will have a home visit & I'm trying to really figure it out and see how can I bring this up to the parent orientation. I really hope it's true what she said but something is telling me she just didn't want to make the effort of driving the 40mins to my house. What can I do or say?

Jessica ScarNaye, don't focus on one thing that you aren't happy about and become fearful of your son's school experience. Approach it more positively. Is there a plan in place? Develop a good relationship with those who are on your team, the nurse, the teacher, the principal, etc. Set up a meeting to talk about your son's needs.

Amazing content. I am about to go in and have a convo with my kid's teacher today. This video set the right tone for me. Thank you. Dr Paul do you have any advices to parents whose kids tend to be more on the quiet side? My daughter is now almost 4 and her teacher said she could be really shutting down and not letting anybody in at the school. But I know for a fact that she can be really chatty and bubbly too. Now it seems that the teachers at her school think she is 'shy' and 'socially awkward'. They even start to call her a 'quiet girl'. How should I approach to them to discuss this problem?

trt trim, first, ask them not to label your child one way. Invite her to open up and let them know the side that you see to her. Ask them to see it as a challenge to find that child within.

Not Gay Bear, we need to be respectful of everyone's beliefs. If we don't agree, be respectful as that is how we want to be treated. Teachers have opinions but they are not able to share those with students.
