What’s difficult is there putting it as a mandatory question in the electronic application. I was applying for a D-Suite position And I couldn’t continue without putting in one figure. Not a range. But one figure, even though I knew what the range was. And I would’ve gone lower with some good negotiation and additional benefits. Likewise, I could’ve gone higher as well. Any advice?.

I had an interview last week and they asked me this. I knew the position paid $80k (research!) but I told her I had seen a wide range of salaries going from $60k to $180k and while $65k would be fine Id also be happy with $180k as a joke. She laughed and was honest that the role pays $80k. But without reasearch I wouldnt have known that thats very appropriate for the position.

Well unless you know someone at the company who knows their actual budget, good luck. You can do all your research but they will try to lowball you while making it feel hard to get you that pay

  • @markslon6626

Exactly, the key is research. And the best strategy for negotiation is to shoot first, slightly higher than what you think they can max offer. That will then influence them to give you the top end of the range they could give you. It's the reverse of the strategy explained in the beginning of the video

You could’ve gotten more if you gave a higher number than the number you researched. You should’ve said you would be fine with something like $110k since the maximum of the range was $180k. And I don’t know why you would think asking for $180k is a joke unless you don’t have enough experience to warrant that amount

  • @asadb1990

    @asadb1990

    Жыл бұрын

@Mark Slon its a shot in the dark because in most cases they know what they want to pay but you have no idea if they can afford what you want. If you are higher than what they want to pay at your experience level, they will likely just ghost you. Better or serious employers who actually need someone will try and work it out or at least be upfront and talk it through.

  • @LimakPan

Good strategy. However, never say a number below what you found the role pays. You're building expectations of someone they can hire for cheap. Let them think you won't be satisfied with the 80k for long, but accepted it as a starting minimum.

Yeah at the end of the day it's a massive red flag for a company to not be upfront about it--and a good chance that it's a dead/"fake" job offer. If you can avoid these companies, don't even bother applying if they haven't already told you what they're trying to pay.

Except in many jobs I've applied for, they literally have salary expectation as a required field on the online job application form. And they only accept numbers in that field. And there is of course (as you said) no salary range on the job ad. Honestly my best advice for this scenario is to highball. Because one time I highballed on the application form, I got an interview and they said "your salary expectation is a bit outside our salary offer. Our offer is ___. Would that be acceptable to you?" At least that way you know you're getting the highest offer possible.

Your value, regardless of background is 1) how you measure up against your coworkers, 2) have you increased the customer base/increased efficiency/helped coworkers to be more effective or productive? 3) your ability to fill in for others as needed and more. If another company has made a higher offer and you're ready to switch you usually raise your value when you tell your current employer that. Nothing gives you a better idea of your value than silently seeking opportunity/applying for a new job(s) or applying for an in-company transfer/promotion. .

Absolutely DO NOT NAME ANY NUMBER, EVEN A BASELINE. The first response is best and the others are OK except when you name a minimum. They will use that against you. Don't name your current salary either. Tell them that it's not relevant because it's not a 1 to 1 job comparison.

@@oliviamiller-davis4667 I'm having exactly this probleme now. I have a couple of strategies for my job interiews next week. A) for the job with different description than my current one I will tell them I saw the number on the job advert - it's not bad but improveable - I will tell them that I'm earning more now and are good for the job, so how much can they give me? For the job that directly translates there is min-max-budget and at the moment I'm getting payed at the top of it (😢sadly I can't keep the old one) so I will say exactly that and ask again this time more directly if the can give me a bit more. Even if not I would be happy because the others don't pay better. Hope that helps.

It depends on the type of position you're applying to. You need to have researched the salary ranges for the career and have a good estimate for what you're worth. If you're a doctor and say you're willing to go for 29K a year, people will think you're a quack or there's something clearly wrong with your mental state.

Fill it with the lower end of the average salary, lower than what you will accept, but not unrealistically low. When they start talking about salary during the interview then say the situation has changed since you sent the application and you are looking for a higher salary. Then ask what range they are willing to negotiate about.

Easy: never apply for a job which doesn't specify the wage! (You already know the company is scummy at this point!)

My manager asked me before he hired me what my pay expectations were, I was interviewing for a fast food job, so I said whatever minimum wage is bc I thought that was an odd question to be asking a 17yr old lol.

I did this. On one of my interviews. The HR literally changed the topic to let's not talk about salary. I mean he did ask me first.

That answer would be a red flag for me as a recruiter. I do like that she asked for the range though. But we don’t ask this question at my company, we always post the salary.

Was asked about salary for the first time. My response was: well California is required to show the pay on the job positing so I believe I saw $$. HR: yes, that’s exactly it but of course it can go up as you work etc. love it - it’s easy. Although in the past I have negotiated and that’s hard 😞

Here's how you really answer the question. Let's say you think you are worth 70k for the job. You know the market range is between 50 and 85k for said job. Add 15 to 20k to what you think your worth is. So, when they say, "What are your salary expectations?" You say, "My expectations are around 90k per year for the role; However, I am willing to negotiate and be flexible." Why is this better? Because you are setting expectations up front, it showcases you understand what the salary range is for your role and that you value your knowledge. When you take the advice Erin gave, it can backfire with you ending up making less than what you otherwise could have. It is true that they tend to have a specific budget for positions, but if they really like you and want to get you on board, those budgets can be expanded to fit your salary expectations within reason.

if the salary itself is nonnegotiable, you could also ask if they would be willing to work with you to have more paid time off, opportunities for at least some remote work (ie WFH 1-2 days a week), etc.

I got a random phone call today asking if I’m interested in a job. I had no idea what the exact job description for this company was, since I technically hadn’t applied, so when they asked this I was like “uhm..” and I had to word vomit what my expectations were cuz I was so unprepared for it
