    Great video. I have been struggling with most of the things you mentioned and the tips are indeed what i found to work best. Having the second eye piece is great idea. I found that the hardest thing is trying align the camera with the eye piece during the night. Doing it during the day seems the most reliable way. Also getting an eyepiece with shorter eye relief might help because the phone holder doesnt allow a lot of movement in the “away” and “towards” the eyepiece directions Any suggestions to move the phone further away from the eyepiece? Perhaps some eyepiece extender ? I dunno Thanks

  • @smalloptics753

    @smalloptics753

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello friend, thank you. Yes , I would recomend always settihg it up in the day time, it really is pot luck if you do it at night. To move the phone further away from the eyepiece all depends on what type of phone holder you are using, if yours is the same as mine in the video you can clamp it further up the eyepice giving you more distance from the phone, with basic phone holders you are limited on adjustment control. I found the best eyepiece to use is a 25mm...it works out just about the right distance to the phone. Unfortunally there isn't one straight answer on this type of photography.. it is your typical case of trial-and-error. Celestron do a top of the range phone adaptor that deals with all the problems of this type of photography, as they have load of adjustment settings..They are a bit pricey....but worth it...Here's a link for it. Take care, clear skies :) www.amazon.co.uk/Celestron-NexYZ-Phone-Scope-Adapter/dp/B07D7V3B8M/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=celestron+81055+nexyz+universal+smartphone+adapter%2C+black&link_code=qs&qid=1615756043&sourceid=Mozilla-search&sr=8-1

    Nice video. I just put in an order for an adapter after having seen your video and some frustration trying to schoot the Star cluster in Hercules with my 10'' dobsonian yesterday night under perfectly clear skies. It feels so bad having not be able to harness the clear skies to capture the Star cluster properly. Trying to find the right position with just the Phone through the eyepiece is really a pain. After 1 hour I just gave up. Looking forward trying what you suggested. Cheers, Michael

    Hi, my original plan was to order a similar adapter to the one you showed. I eventually settled for the Celestron NexYZ and am pretty happy with the results. Of course a smartphone is not a DSLR or dedicated astronomy camera. I had read a lot of reviews on the product and I believe they must have made some improvements since the comments were posed as I had no problems to align the adapter. Of course you should do that under daylight. And it is of course hard to find the right focus when 90% of the screen is black. Also thanks for the great hint removing the rubber from the eyepiece, that definitely helps and is not a problem for the NexYZ which can be aligned towards the eyepiece and not only in the X and Y direction. Michael

    Hi Jason, I'm a bit confused with the term 'eye relief'. I thought it meant you could view with your eye (or phone camera) anywhere from very close, up to the eye relief distance. On the video you say the phone camera should be set at the eye relief distance so it got me wondering. Is the image sharpest when viewed at the eye relief distance? Cloudy night here unfortunately so I can't try it out but even with my 30mm lens which has a 22mm eye relief, I've been viewing with my eye close to the eyepiece. I thought eye relief was to help if glasses were worn. Newbie error or is it ok to view closer?

    Hi, I was having a small issue with my phone and was wondering if anyone could help me. When I attached the eyepiece to the phone adapter i could see a clear picture through the eyepiece. however, when I put the eyepiece into the telescope, the view in the phone was just a black screen and I could sometimes see part of the eyepiece in the corner of the screen but I could never get it into the full field of view. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I was able to get a video of Jupiter and its moons crossing the scope with zero color at all though Maybe I need a filter because it was too much light not sure. I never did find M57 in a 10" dob I had some 30 years ago, did see the comet impact on Jupiter though. In 2012 as you might known Venus passed close enough to the pleiades to be captured in a 500mm telescope and my canon 40d, telescope in question was the celestron eq130 model escapes me, but it was an f5 and will have hadca similar motor drive to the one you have without the hand control. Suffice to say best day of three was cloudy, though I did get an image the following day, about 6s tracking I was the max I achieved, in 2020 Ven This is not Venus did much the same, this time I was equipped with the sky watcher 200p bought in mind for the grand conjunction the same year, as it happened the 1000mm and full frame 6D was just enough to capture M45 and Venus, guess what cloudy again, though did manage a capture on a EF70-210 at 210 with a 1.4x converter making it 298mm but it wasn't good. Just prior to getting the new mount, I did do a little deep sky, well M42, not easy to miss, on a static mount, I think I managed either 0.5 or 2s, but 2s seems to long, I dud a whole bunch of them re centring every so often, did calibration, except flats if I remember, result was ok. The term when using a eyepiece as a magnifier is called eyepiece projection, if I use the 10mm in the image train I end up with an 18m f90 scope, I did manage a single exposure of a waxing gibbous Venus again not great, a lot of chromatic aberration, possibly from the 10mm eyepiece. So lots of things can be done on limited equipment, so for the fun of it. My background is photography based, and I just love pushing limits. The furthest object I know I have imaged is literally a smudge of light, that is 3.2 billion light is away, this why I love this hobby and marrying it with photography, it just never ceases to amaze me. I am never going to get great images where I live, but I have done M43 some justice, but I have a new way of doing flats, keeping stray light out, so I will have another go this winter. Keep up the the good work explaining things so they ate easy to understand. Clear Skies
