How to Take Care of Your Stringed Instrument (With Demonstration) | How To Music | Sarah Joy
Музыка
It's important to take care of your instrument and bow. There are a few key things to remember, and they're all quite simple. I'd recommend following this routine every day, or perhaps every other day, depending on how much you practice.

I loved the tip about loosening the fine tuners and tuning with the pegs, so you're certain to have room to tune up or down with the fine tuners.
Ok at 3:20 when she said "dont do that noo" killed me
For those of us who cannot change strings so often, denatured alcohol does not leave the residue that rubbing alcohol does. It's not a huge difference but a difference nonetheless. And, btw, do not dump it down the drain - it kills the bacteria that break down waste whether you're in a town or city sewer system or have your own septic system. Thank you Sarah for all the info you give us. I have learned an immense amount of knowledge crucial to the improvement of my playing.
I will like every single one of your videos its one of the simplest and best ones out there Thanks!

Hello, I am unsure how to remove the stubborn rosin on my cello strings and they would not rub off on to my cloth. What should I do?
Two things. 1. Use a scotch bright green colored pad to remove excess rosin from the strings. Rubbing alcohol if you drip it onto the varnish, it WILL eat it away. Maybe 2-4 times a year I'll use R.A. to clean string and fingerboard but I always hold the cello so that the fingerboard is angled so as not allow it to drip on the body of my cello. 2. I always keep my fine tuners open, (as unscrewed as possible) for two reasons. Yes, in a quick pinch you can tune up a string in a hurry in performance and ALSO, an open fine tuner means the string length behind the bridge is shorter which will result in a brighter or more focused sound.
Quick question? So do i have to clean the rosin off the bow?
Thank you Sarah joy :)

What is a humidifier
Hi Sarah... I found your tutorioal all very much helpfull. Looking at how you clean the cello, is it okay to hold the fingerboard ? I afraid it could damage it.

Is there a reason why running the rosin from frog to tip is the correct way?
@sarahjoyrecordings

+Sasha Numbers it gives it an even tone. If you do it the other way, your bow will produce an inconsistent sound.
My case doen't have the humidifier thing, is it really important? Should I store my cello in a room with a water vase near or something similar to provide humidity? I live in Spain and it's very dry now in summer! Your video was very helpful, even though I've been playing for several years now! Thank you a lot!

Yeah, it's fairly important, although I sometimes I let mine run dry. I think a room humidifier might help? Never tried it.

Where can you find the cheapest cellos.🎻
Great post and advice. I am the same with my pianos ..always "scrub up" before I play..out of respect. Apologies for being quiet recently. We're expecting our 3rd son and I've busy with my other two! 2.5 and 1.5!! Little monkeys. Good luck and all the best. Xx

On the risk of sounding silly, but the process of taking care of the instrument, is a form of bonding for me. And having a bond with the instrument, makes me love playing it even more.
Hi! Is it okay to use normal tape for the cello (like masking tape or washi tape) or do you have to use a special kind of tape?

Do you have any advice on how to write your own music. Every so often I'll create a short piece but I don't really know how to write it down so sometimes I forget and that really sucks
@poploco

Personally one trick I would suggest... if you are not yet great at writing it down on music sheets for now, is to record your voice (and / or music that you play on an instrument). That way you can play it back. To record you can use your cell phone if you have one, a tablet, or even a computer.
Hi Sara I have played the Cello for 2 years and I bought my Cello one year ago, I have never changed my strings, I practice almost 6-8 hours weekly, so should I change it? what do you think that is the best strings brand?, other thing that I want to ask you... I left the Cello for almost 3 or 4 months, I know that's so terrible because you can forget many things and it happened to me so my muscles don't remember the correct position, so... how can I correct it and get best tuning? what do you that I have to do? and ofcourse thanks for all your support!! it has helped me a lot
@sarahjoyrecordings

I would probably change your strings soon. For a student instrument, I would go with D'Addario Kaplan strings. To gain back position and technique, etc.. tutorials can help. However, the best idea is to find a private teacher.
Why should you rosin your bow like that, does it affect the bow? Or the sound?

Hey Sarah, I really want a cello case, but since I am just a beginner, my teacher and parents told me not to buy a cello case right now, they told me to buy the cello case when I play for at least one and a half year. When do you recommend to buy a cello case?
@sarahjoyrecordings

I think a case will be necessary when you start taking it places. It should be fine at home without one.

Do you oil your cello to maintain the varnish?
@sarahjoyrecordings
7 жыл бұрын
You can, but I've only let other people do it for me. Never took the time to do it myself. Probably should.
Just a little tip - I was always nervous that alcohol is going to spill on my cello's varnish so I started using antibacterial gel instead of liquid alcohol, it works really great and the bottle is so tiny that I can keep it in my cello case :) I also use it to clean the fingerboard once a while, I hope it won't damage the ebony fingerboard in long term... I've been doing it for 2 years now and the fingerboard seems the same to me and it's bacteria-free.
I clean my strings with water and a rag, it seems to work fine, and I didn't want to pay for new strings bc I am still a beginner. is that okay? also is it bad that I don't have a humidifier?
@sarahjoyrecordings
8 жыл бұрын
I don't really know what water would do?? I've never done that before. New strings make a huuuuuge difference in your sound. It really just depends on how much you're willing to put up with. A humidifier is always good. :)

I play the cello and I been wanting to clean my strings but don't know how, so does rubbing alcohol eventually ruined the strings?
@TheBlueeyedJew
6 жыл бұрын
Selena Johannsen you should replace your strings every few months, depending upon how often you play anyway. Alcohol won't damage steel or other metal string cores.
@eryana9437
5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlueeyedJew Only professionals change their strings out that often. The time between necessary string changes depends on how often you play and which string (the bottom two strings G and C typically last longer). Personally, I change my A and D string once a year and my G and C string every couple of years. You can most of the time hear when you are in need of a string change, e.g. when the sound is off or the string does not catch as easily as it used to, does not hold to tune, or there is some structural damage to the string.
Is there any product, cheap or homemade, to clean the body of the cello and fingerboard? Can you use alcohol on the fingerboard? Definitely not the body,too damaging
@sarahjoyrecordings
8 жыл бұрын
+Zachary Lockhart no, don't use alcohol on the fingerboard! I do know that there is a product you can buy, but honestly I don't use anything nor do I know of any musician who does. Ocassionally, I'll take it to the shop and have them clean it and check everything.

+Sarah Joy thanks for the heads up :)
Why do you have to use the rubbing alcohol on the strings? Why would it not be good enough to just wipe off the rosin with a rag?
@sarahjoyrecordings
6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes a rag just doesn't get all of it off, especially if you've irresponsibly left the rosin on the strings for too long.
How often do you put rosine on your bow? And how often do you clean your strings?
@Gordon_Chen
5 жыл бұрын
How often you rosin your bow doesn't really matter because it's how much rosin you need to apply to suit your preference and how often/ how long you play. If you have too much rosin on your bow, you may find that it is really loud but really hard to play and control. Whilst on the other hand, too less rosin would mean that you cannot produce much sound and have a gripless feel. Personally, I would apply quite heavily on my bow and every time I practice on the cello (around every 15-30 min or when I feel it's time), I would just clean my strings and cello and rosin my bow again
@clara9228
5 жыл бұрын

I'm scared because I've been rosining my violin bow like the wrong way you demonstrated my entire life! Is that at least okay to do if it's a violin bow?
@sarahjoyrecordings

There’s no reason to be scared. :) It can just create a “blotchy” sound, but if you start rosining correctly, the sound will smooth out.

I messed with my cello once on the day of my show and the bridge did a yeet and broke in half and now I’m scared to even go near me the bridge.
Alcohol is fine for strings, but beware of getting it on the body (varnish). If you have an instrument that is French polished or varnished with a shellac based varnish, the alcohol will dissolve it and could easily ruin it. Most student instruments do not have an alcohol based varnish, but this is a really good fear to instill just in case.
