The backlog was crippling me. I had 1000 games and I had played maybe 30-40. I sold everything and focused on two systems. I’m doing much better now, but I’m still inspired by your updates progressing in games on social media

I feel this. About a decade ago I had close to 1,800 games. I began selling them off to achieve some goals in life or get me out of a financial pinch. Then I really began to unload by boxes full. These days I only buy games for PS5, PS4, PS3, PS2, & OGXBox. That being said, my PS3/PS2/XBox collections rarely have additions and every few months a couple of games get cut. One rule of thumb I enjoy is, if I haven’t played this in the last year…why is it still here? If I’ve got an answer I deem reasonable, I check back in 3 months. If the truth is it’s just unlikely that I’ll make time for this specific game…I sell it. All of this stuff can be replaced if I want it back. Haven’t regretted this process since then. My collection is roughly 200 games now? Which is too many in my eyes 😂

Wow this is almost therapeutic to hear someone with the same problem 😅 My main issue is being overwhelmed by choice and not knowing which direction I want to go. But thank you for some helpful tips! I'm going to make my list now!

I agree. Maybe narrow it down by genre. Just pick a few JRPGs, a few action-adventure, or whatever genres you want. It’s good to have diversity as it can help with getting into a “gaming funk”.

I agree with the “1 game at a time”. I typically have 1 game going at a time - 1 for console and 1 for handheld. Another tip that I’ve only recently introduced for myself which has been working great is to drop a game if you’re not enjoying it. Some people may decide to push through something they find a slog, I’ve done it so many times, but I found that I would burn out or it would take me so much longer to finish it. I would push through because I felt like I may have wasted time putting something down I had already started. Someone said it best to me “it’s not a waste of time starting a game, but it is a waste of time if you push through something you’re not enjoying”. If you’ve put the game down with the intention of going back then keep it on your backlog. If you put it down with no intention of going back, then remove it. Whether you decide to sell it or keep it is up to you. I also recommend with tracking. Keeping a diary or use any of the various backlog websites/apps out there. I find viewing a list of everything you beaten and watching it grow is such an achievement.

I recently had this connection when I tried to play the campaign for Marvel’s Avengers. It had such a solid start but as you gather more missions, it just became more of a tedious slog. I wanted to continue playing because I felt like there was a lot of effort put into it but I wasn’t having fun. I realized that I should play something that I enjoy over a commitment. Hobbies should always be about fun and not obligation.

Agreed. I use Gametrak, and while I do keep a track of all my libraries across the platforms. I’m most frequently using the Backlog list, and on the Wishlist I try to just pick 1-2 games a month that I KNOW I’ll be playing day 1. In between new releases getting through my backlog and replays that I pick.

Tip #2 is definitely key. Like in the past when I wouldn't follow that I just didn't finish games. Like as a big JRPG fan, that's a must. Excellent video! In terms of a collection, I just want the games I have and the things I have displayed in my game room to be things I love and I couldn't get enough of. Fear of missing out has made backlogs insane and you're right on Twitter I hear it all the time about the "backlog grows ever larger."

This was a great video. This year I had a banner year in completing my games. 38 total in 2023. But I would say I have 3 categories New Backlog Replay Games are all about enjoyment and I already have my favorites. For my backlog I try to keep a short list to stick to, if I even finish 50% of that shortlist I consider it a win. This year of the 38 22 were 2023 games 9 backlogs 7 were replays Like you I stick 1 console and 1 ‘handheld’ game at a time. So it’s usually my PlayStation & Switch getting game time most of the time. This year 2023, was especially packed with bangers so it I still missed out on games like Diablo 4, Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty, Pikmin 4, and Alan Wake II. The thing that REALLY helped me complete my backlog and keep with new games was keeping it two games at a time max, AND NOT trophy hunting anymore. Just do and enjoy as much of the game as possible before moving. I do need to try to stop binging on those sales though… Here’s to 2024!

I’ve learned over the years that I really don’t have to beat every game that I try. Each game has its own unique experience. I may or may not have the passion and dedication to experience the entire game. I like being spontaneous about what I play. I want to play whatever I can whenever I can. Honestly I just love having games on a shelf and saying “I’ll play you one day.” XD My biggest tip for tackling a backlog is just try a game and you gotta be okay with maybe not liking it or not wanting to finish it. I think we’re afraid sometimes of having to commit to finishing an entire game.

This is a great set of tips. I chronologicaly go through my consoles from Dreamcast to Xbox series X. I'll pick a game based on if i have a save and how far im into it. I went from 15 games to 36 last year. Ill look at my trophy/achievement list and pick the game with the highest % that i haven't beaten. Really showed me how scatterbrained i was/am.

I like the fact that you talk about picking 6, 7, or 8 rather than making a list of your 500 uncomplete games. For me, making a list of games isn't about trying to terrorize myself. It's about playing with purpose and having goals I want to complete so that I don't end up with analysis paralysis about what to play next. The more manageable list also means I can add games from the upcoming year to what I want to play that year without feeling I am failing at something.

I find myself coming back and watching this video this year. I’ve tried this out and I’ve beat a TON of games this year. I also made a spreadsheet of what games I played, when I started them, when I finished them, what year they released, what system they’re on, and who the developers were. Cool to keep track of.

Im really happy someone else thinks like me! I try to platinum all my RPGs so i think this is a really useful list.

Great video. I have been trying one console and one handheld game and that's been working for me. I agree with you, I used to follow the trend of getting a lot of games because others did so. I dont do that anymore and I'm going through the process of selling/trading in what I no longer want or will not play.

What a great video. I actually changed my gaming habits about 3-4 years ago and actually follow a lot of the tips you point out here. One game at a time. Only buy games you are planning on playing. Putting a list together. Alternate game styles. It's helped tremendously and keeps me from burning out. The last tip I had to give myself was, "Don't be afraid to dump a game you aren't having fun with." There were several games I forced myself to play because they were super popular, but I just wasn't having fun. It just contributes to burnout and boredom. I always want to give a game a chance, but can't feel bad if they don't click with me.

Came here from the My Life in Gaming yearly wrap up video! Life is so much easier if you don't play live service games. But alas, I'm stuck and find it hard to stop playing what I'm playing in order to play something else. Those are the real traps, which is weird to say because I also enjoy playing the game, but it definitely prevents trying anything else since they never "end". Not buying stuff because you think it'll be rare or you want to have it now is a good tip. I have stopped buying games because I think I'll play it or like it though and accept the fact that if I want to ever play it, I'll get it digitally or in the worse case scenario of when a service shuts down for whatever reason, someone else will have uploaded a playthrough of it. Hope people have better luck getting through their backlogs though!

Excellent advice! I totally agree with making a list first. Plus I get extreme satisfaction from marking things off a list. :) I also try to play one game at a time, but mix a FPS in there at times to break it up or enjoy with friends. But makes it much easier to tackle them one at a time. As for the impulse buy....I'll work on that. Lol. You're 100% right about this, but I'm a sucker. Great video Femtrooper!

A lot of great tips 😀 I'm 100% guilty of unopened games collecting dust... Only getting games i'm going to play is one reason I stopped using monthly retro game services. I'm not collecting games to get a "full set" on a console, so they mainly add games I'm not looking to play! I do use Grouvee to track what's in the backlog and what I feel like playing next. I'll use the "to play" list when I finish a game and see what looks good, vs planning out the games for a year.

Haha, that seems to be pretty common with people. I’m not into collecting or straying from a story in a game but I definitely understand!

One thing I’ve been doing since around 2010 is what you mentioned about making a list of what to play and has helped me so much. Really enjoyed your video on this subject! My backlog didn’t exist in the 90’s or 2000’s. It came down to two factors: Being obsessed with Demon’s and Dark Souls and basically consumed my gaming from 2009-2015 then Dark Souls II, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls III released haha! The other factor is being more open-minded towards genres that I had no interest in many years ago, like Indie games, but thankfully, most of those are short and can be completed faster.

the backlog can become overwhelming so quickly, as I've admittedly become the collector that accrued an entire shelf of sealed games (bought mostly thru sales) planning to get to all of them and getting lost in it. Since college tho I've definitely took the playing approach of one at a time otherwise I'd never finish any of them. Another thing I'd add is if you have a massive backlog, don't fall into the GamePass / Subscription trap like I currently am 😅 now I'm just waiting till that runs out and playing as much thru that till I tackle the main collection.

I pretty much do all of these things so completely agree! Breaking up game genres and lengths really help me too, I rarely go from one long jrpg to another

Awesome video! I need some advice though haha. Ever since switch came out my backlog has gotten a lot bigger every year but I was kind of managing it. Then I finally got a PS4 about a year ago and a PS Plus subscription. So my backlog increased 2X but I was also excited about all these PS games I could now finally play. What I didn't realize was the amount of games that leave the service monthly from the included PS Plus games. So monthly now I found myself primarily just beating 1 or 2 of the "PS Plus games leaving in May" for example. This helps in me beating more games, but is frustrating in that I have played far less of my switch backlog games because of it. And haven't even tried any of the long epic best of PS4 games. I just find myself in this cycle where I beat a game or so a month, enjoy it, and then when I'm finally ready to play Persona, Fire Emblem, Mario Wonder, Metroid, Ghost of Tsushima, Octopath, Last or Us etc I never get to those now because in my mind I'm being smart getting my money's worth for PS Plus Premium by playing those games leaving the service. I love gaming so much but I do sometimes feel in a funk of what to play in this current state and feel obligated to first play those leaving the ps plus service games. Anybody else with PS Plus or Gamepass have a good backlog strategy for getting the most of the services but still working on the backlog and games you REALLY want to play?? Thank you! I don’t have any of those services, I just play my games that I own and buy new ones when I want. One at a time mostly / sometimes two. I just commit and then end up finishing a ton!

If you want to tackle your backlog, try writing reviews for games once you beat them. It gives me more motivation to finish it and I'll make time and prioritize it playing whatever game I'm looking to review.

I tend to run two games at a time. One is my main game. The one I want to beat. The other is my relax game. That tends to be something I don't view a true win condition for; a match 3 game, a cozy sim, a live action thing like Genshin, etc.

I've been doing this since the start of last year and it has worked wonders. I make a list at the start of the year and go through them which also helps a lot with deciding what to play next. No pondering about what I should play I just put in the disc/cartridge and go. One other tip is depending on if you're busier during certain times of the year due to work or holidays is to play smaller titles like indie games of maybe a game you played before got some dlc you can go back to, at least that's how I do it. The key is definietly to play 1-2 games at a time. The amount of times I've gone back to a game and had no idea what was happening story wise or couldn't remember game mechanics was getting a bit ridiculous. Especially with longer JRPGs. I however still buy too many that I'll never play 😅

Just like you that really bothered me so over the years I rather talk about the games in more detail than just what I’ve been buying. Great video! Since I became a bit of a gamer only later in life, I already applied some of your advise, as it pretty much translated from the way one behaves regarding other media - for example, playing one game alone at a time. Another thing that came to my mind apropos of what you said about buying games was this: if you're buying physical, buy only those games you believe you'll replay some time down the line. I love people who collect, but can't see the point of owning lots of games you'll play once and then leave them collecting dust for decades: so, what I do is buying anything I think I might replay in a few years in physical; everything else is bought in digital and on sale if possible.

MLiG brought me here. Great video; already made my list for 2023. I resonated with what you said about the gathering of 'pickups' and not playing the games acquired with them. I'm considering just cutting the chaff and selling/trading in all the stuff that's been sitting on a shelf never played - did you do something similar to get your collection to where it is now?

That could be a good idea! I never did that but I have gotten rid of games that I don’t like. No point in them being in my collection. I used to buy a TON and not play them years ago and maybe I’ll get to those games - maybe I won’t but in terms of current purchases I only buy what I know 100% I am going to play.

Oh the ever present backlog... These are some good tips! :) I have a pretty substantial backlog lol. I feel like I do well with only buying games I actually want to play (and waiting on the big releases that can wait), but I'm pretty bad at sticking to one game at a time. I'm easily distracted 😅 If I'm really not enjoying something, I'm really good about dropping it though! So there's that I guess lol. I also just really enjoy buying games lol. Really doesn't help that some of my fav games tend to be niche with lower print runs (Blue Reflection and really many games developed by Gust as an example), so there's a lot of feeling like "gotta get X now because it will definitely get expensive later!". Add the 3DS eshop closure into the mix and it's a disaster >

You bring up excellent points Femtrooper, I remember getting into the whole FOMO hype around september last year and preordered a bunch of games from Limited Run Games, now they finally arrived and I completely forgot that I even ordered some of them. Thankfully I took a chill pill from them. I tend to just buy up games that I had an interest in back when they released but at the time, couldn't afford them when I was younger. I always make sure to buy games I see myself playing and you won't find much in terms of games I have no interest in. At this point, I've come to terms with the idea that I may not get to these all until much later in my life and if not, at least I have a hell of a library of games for my eventual children. :)

Ooooh boy, this vid is super relatable, very very very relatable, I have done some of this stuff but I took so far to the extreme or I forgot due to COVID. Tip 1: I did this A LOT like a hell of a lot. I took it way too far, I beat games every 2-3 days almost all the times and it was crazy, it drove me crazy doing it times and I drives me crazy that I was able to do it at all. I also gave my self an estimated projection of how many games I were to beat a month. Before I went from 12 but then I was able to go up to 16 or 18. I beat 172 games last year and I managed to beat 51 thus far. But now, I am overhauling this, I am going to give myself a 5-6 set of games to beat and try to my hardest to stick with them and I have free reign to handle these 5-6 games any way I see fit. No more 2-3 day deadlines. Tip 2: I do stick to one game, all though lately I started several as of late, but I prefer to give a game at least 3 hours or get to the end and hopefully beat it. I actually manged to beat over 400 games since COVID started. Tip 3: I FORGOT ABOUT THIS HARD. Ever since COVID started, I kept impulse buying after impulse buying after buying when I should've bought stuff I know I was going to play. Now, I only impulse game buy at conventions because they happen every few months now. I only buy games I know I am going to play now. I did the whole gift thing recently, I do it with my brother on birthdays and christmas. Overall, the past few months for me has been crazy, I have been beating games like no tommorrow but haven't read or watched anything in a long while. I am planning to change that now.

Awesome tips! I'm new to your channel, and have been loving your videos. I have to disagree with the 1 game at a time. I started playing multiples recently, and that has really helped me get through my backlog. I'll get upset at a stage, or having to grind, or just not into a certain game in the moment. In the past, I just wouldn't play until I felt like getting back into that particular game, and it would take me SO long to beat just 1. Now, I just put in another game that I'm currently playing and keep it going. I've been able to up my "games beaten" list since doing that. I would say that if you are playing multiple games, it is best to keep the list low. My list is 3 games tops across my consoles.

Nice tips Paige! Some I'd like to add are, make a backlog list, I say I'm going to play that game and I forget what game it was and end up playing something else on a whim. Also focus on one console per month and switch it up each month.

Awesome idea, I have sort of done that. I have a list for all my consoles and which games still need to be played. It’s big but I’m working my way through it!

I never have any plan regarding this stuff at all. I just concentrate on the immediate next game and after that I decide what I’ll play next. I’m just very random with how I go through life. I used to feel pressured to get through a lot of stuff over a period of time, due to how I’d browse social media and see lots of people talking about lots of new games, and I’d feel the need to try and keep up. But I’ve stopped doing that now, as it’s not good for me, and I want to enjoy what I play at my own pace. Lately I’m not even feeling that enthusiastic about the medium. I completely agree with you regarding you should only buy what you intend on playing and that it’s foolish to try and play lots at once. I’ve noticed some people actually manage to play multiple RPGs at the same time. I’ve no idea how they can do that. That said, lately I’m bouncing off of games and sometimes will buy others to see if they engage me better. But I’m certainly not going to splash out big on them. I’ll usually wait until they’re on a sale. I take no pride in the aspect of increasing my collection. Most of the games I buy are digital now anyway.

Disagree about not playing more games at the same time. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a relaxing game with beautiful landscapes and the next day I want a game with loud, crazy characters in a futuristic world. Still beating games, but I compare it more to wanting to walk through the forest one day and going to a party the next. Do agree with waiting with buying. They're often cheaper that way too. Exception is when there is a temporary big discount on Playstation games.

Everyone has their own system so it just depends on how you work! For me, it’s one or two at a time but for someone else it might be five. I say whatever works for you - do that!

what I usually do is set aside $10 a week and buy the game I've been eyeballing. That gives me roughly 6 to 7 weeks to actually play through a game and if it's on PlayStation, then I ahve time to platinum it and definitely get my money's worth. I will usually go through action adventure, FPS then RPG. Since RPGs are naturally the longer out of the three genres.

I definitely go by some of your tips such as play one game at a time. Even naturally if I dabble in a couple I end up sticking with one. Another is buy games when you plan on playing them. While I do that for the most part, sometimes I do not. For instance, a couple big hitters came out recently so I bought them all meaning to play them. I think I will get through these games though hopefully, maybe Arceus is the only one I may not get to before XC3 drops. The main contender is HZD2 which is open world so I might spend lots of time on side content and exploration so it could take me awhile. But yeah, I try to have a short list of what games I wanna play to keep me focused too. Like now I plan on playing RE8 and then HZD2. Now, I got in my head Tunic which is an indie Zelda so I might add that on before HZD 2 since it is on the shorter side ahhhhhhh. I think my main problems I know which make my backlog increase is I play games slower. I might spend the same amount of time on a game as another person but that person is way ahead of me. I think factors could be I do not stay focused as much and drift off the main adventure, maybe they are just better than me at games and make bigger strides. They are using guides since I still use them but I still try to figure things out for myself, but if I get too stuck I will resort to one. Also, another thing is it is not my only hobby like some. I play mmo game always along with my game I am trying to beat so I am always splitting up my time between them. I like reading and watching tv shows and movies too so sometimes I am doing that. Also, just life can keep me busy even when I have time off work. There is always something that has to be done such as a yard project or something or spending time with family. It breaks up my dad so I might have a little time for gaming in the evening or something. There is definitely some games I will not play either that I have bought that I could sell too. I got ahead of myself planning on playing them but with my play style I cannot play them all. I also have an imaginary backlog meaning that even though I have not bought the games I would like to play them sometime. I think another thing is realistically some people have more money to drop on games and gaming media. I am not too humble with buying but I am more frugal then some who buy lots of games. It can get expensive so I try to watch with the money spending too with my own budget.

I definitely play games slower than some people based on the amount of time I get but that’s okay! Slow and steady wins the race! I’d rather play something slowly but actually finish it than just have 10 games going forever.

Watching this while my ADHD urges me to buy Baldurs Gate 3 lol

I just gave up on keeping track of my backlog 😂 IT HAS NO POWER OVER ME! 😂

Paige always nails her video's a youtube legend. I buy only digital now. What you suggested I already do. I agree 100% I pick one game and play that game til. I finish it. I only buy games I really want. I buy any game at any time because to be honest I'm lucky to want to buy 1 to 3 new games a year. I have a very limited game likes because of this I never would buy Game Pass or similar with Playstation its a waste of money each month. I do the same now with Netflix. I started shows and went to another one and found out I forgot what I watched before. So Now its Hemlock Grove watch til finish it. Got side tracked only games I have yet to play is Parasite Eve 1 & 2 and my goal is to finish both by Halloween. Always nice to see you Paige 8)

Very good! I love watching collection vids but when people go "I didn't try it", or "I only played a little" or "I don't think this game is very good" for most games they have, why even collect at that point?

THIS!!! Obviously I haven’t beat every game in my collection but I try really hard to get through what I can!

I'll say honestly that a huge amount of games are never beaten by a lot of people... And that's fine. It doesn't matter if you beat a game or not.

I impulse buy all the time even though I tell myself no smh my birthday is in Feb too I got some amazing games because good games do release around xmas time 😄

I loved this video, I have been having such a hard time deciding what to play in my backlog that I end up playing none and just play a new game. It also seemed hard to remember what I had and didn't have, since 90% of my games are owned digitally. But after this video I've decided to finally go through my digital libraries and write them down, so I have a better handle on things. Then use some of your rules to start wittling away at games. We'll see how it goes, but at least there's a plan and strategy in place now. I do have a question, I found gaming subscriptions such as GamePass and PS Plus, making it harder to decide what to play by enlarging my collection by 100's of games. Do you stay away from these types of subscriptions? Thanks for the video!!

I’m happy to help! I don’t do the subscription thing because I know things are timed and limited. It may work for some people but not me.

Yep, I know how it is! I still buy lots but I beat more nowadays so I don’t feel as bad lol

I can't plan ahead man, I just play what I want when I want. How can I predict on Jan 1st what I want to play in the summer? Setting rules, organising, planning etc seems like it would take the fun out of gaming

Totally fair! Everyone does it differently and like I said, new releases come out and then I obviously want to play those but I still have my key games that I want to get though. As a parent with limited time, I have to be disciplined!

I truly wish we could sell our games in our library after were done or realized we dont want to play them, 😢

Hmmm... Seems like advice on how to BEAT games rather than how to play them. I had a list of games I wanted to play last year... Didn't play any of them. I played a tiny bit of a bunch of games. My backlog is games I have NEVER played. I rarely beat games so that's not even on my radar. I mostly only buy games I will get value out of after 5 minutes or games I will play immediately. Everything else is free.

My new year's resolution is to only buy the new Zelda.
