How to Survive Falling into The Niagara Falls

Jet skiing at the top of Niagara Falls wasn't your best idea. You’re already beginning to lose feeling in your body. The Niagara River rarely gets much above freezing, so hypothermia could be setting in. But that’s not your biggest problem, since you're near Horseshoe Falls, with its 57 m (188 ft) drop. The water rushes over the edge of the Falls at 109 km/h (68 mph). And it's taking you with it. Can you survive falling into Niagara Falls?

the thing is that falling you may be screaming or breathing fast. when you hit the water you are going to immediately get sucked under at least 20 to 30 meters deep. plus you have the counter current pushing you back into the water fall. You are problaly going to need at least 1 minute of breath to swim past the current and up 20 meters to the surface.

There’s a theme park on the Canadian side called MarineLand. It has a ride called the Sky Screamer that’s constructed on a mountain and built very high. If you sit on the side of the ride facing the Falls, you’ll get the best view of the Falls money can buy.

I think it's funny that they fail to mention that the constant water pressure will bring you back under the falls and hold your body there for years potentially. That poor girl that jumped last winter was never found. Then if you do survive the jump and get to the surface, you have the worlds only class 6 rapids which you won't survive that and the whirlpool.

I was in the US Coast Guard, stationed in Buffalo for 1 summer. If a boat in the river gets into the rapids above the falls it will most likely get hung up in the rocks and not drift all the way to the brink / crest. We rescued a 22 ft boat one night with 5 drunk fishermen, who thought they were going the other way. Their boat was caught in the rocks, and we took them off one at a time with a Canadian Parks Dept jet boat (no propeller). The operators at both dams on the falls also have the ability to open the water intakes full and purge the water thru, to reduce the flow of water over the falls. That is partly why their boat was stuck, the intakes are normally open at night, and the flow of water over the falls is greatly reduced.

When a person submerges under cold water instantly they may open their mouth in a reflex and suck air in by a reflex, like a cold shower. So initially some of these people may have not been pummeled by rocks but hit the water opened mouth and drowned instantly. They invented drysuit for a reason.

I live in Niagara Falls, NY and it’s beautiful. However, people need to realize that the bigger waterfall, The Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, has less rigid and massive sharp rocks at the bottom whereas Niagara Falls, the US side, is almost 100% impossible to survive due to the massive sharp and rigid rocks at the bottom. More people survived going over the Horseshoe Falls than Niagara Falls! And DUH, there are strong railings to keep you from “slipping” or falling off as long as you have a brain, it’s safe. I would highly suggest visiting both the US and Canadian side and experiencing the Cave of the Winds (only US side) that let’s you take a walk right under Niagara Falls and the Maid of the Mist (both US & Ontario, Canada) where you ride boats right up close and almost under the Horseshoe Falls & Niagara Falls. The natural whirlpool is also phenomenal! You can go over it on a cabled trolley from the Canadian side only and it’s so worth it!
