This guy forgot one point. if you get charged run and throw something smelly onto the ground in the bears sight like your shirt, backpack or even better if you have some food on you, if you're very lucky the polar bear gets curious enough to stop, this is especially important if you're close to some refugee like a house or close to your car or snowmobile. Can buy you a very few important seconds.

I'm a born and raised Alaskan. I've spent a lifetime out in Alaskan wilderness and have had dozens of encounters with grizzlies and black bears alike, some scarier than others, but in spite of the clear and present danger in most cases bears generally show very little interest in people and will normally go out of their way to avoid noisy groups of three or more (assuming there aren't any idiots with a death wish leaving food or garbage anywhere near camp). That being said, all that goes out the window when it comes to polar bears. I never knew what it truly felt like having an apex predator staring you down as it's food until I was in the presence of these animals. Most bears may be omnivorous opportunists that would prefer lazily filling up on grass and berries before making a meal out of you, that being said, fruits and vegetables don't grow in the arctic. Survival is the only reason they need to turn your ass from an "is" to a "was".

  • @oligultonn

A Polar Bear will decide if you are his next meal when he smells you. If he comes and checks you out and moves in close without attacking it is simply because he isn't hungry. Polar Bears also are not afraid of groups of people. They have absolutely 0 fear of humans. The only reason they avoid groups is because it is simply not worth the effort. They will approach groups of people and check them out with 0 hesitation tho.

Worst case scenario if you don't have a gun, bear spray or flares is to quickly run towards the bear. This will only work with some polar bears and will be more successful if you catch the bear by surprise. Polar bears are the apex predator so if you run towards it, it can confuse and startle the bear into running away. I work in the arctic and had to do this once. Thankfully the bear didn't notice me until I was running towards it so it took off in the other direction.

No but seriously though, if you ever are in the arctic with nothing to defend yourself than just kiss your life goodbye. Unlike grizzlies who mostly just attack cause they assume you're a threat, polar bears attack to kill you and eat you! I think maybe your best option is to run, hear me out on this one. If you're a reasonably fit and have enough adrenaline you might be able to out run one. I mean its worth a try considering you're dead meat either way.

Leave the building as soon as you possibly can. Do not wait for anything. Know your exits. Stay calm, do NOT scream. If locked in a room, stay AWAY from the door window, this is how Nikolas Cruz (Parkland) killed most of his victims. Be aware of where the gunshots are coming from. If in the same room as the shooter, do not play the hero unless you know 100% you can get the shooter down. Use something sharp are a blunt object. If in the same room as the shooter, stay quiet and keep out of direct sight. If the shooter shoots someone close to you, play dead. These are a few of the things I know, don't take this as truth but it's just my opinion on what to do. Also, be nice to everyone at school, you never know what someone is going through mentally and how some people really just want a good friend.

@@ahmedayaat2727 I’m sorry, did I hear unpredictable? Meaning that it can change up at any moment, and it’s hard to tell when? In fact you said VERY. Meaning I’m not wrong. They can and will attack and on-site if they see it necessary. You walking can be something they could possibly see as a threat. And like you said, if they’re hungry, they’re likely to attack. So before you try to correct someone, don’t reinforce what they’re saying by just saying it differently and in a more vague way. My point still stands and it’s still correct. And for a person that didn’t even realize how aggressive these bears were until they saw the first clip, I wouldn’t be talking about researching if I were you.

Had one show up two days ago here in the Arctic. Our camp cooks were making bacon and other breakfast foods. We were going about our day when one of our loader operators yells " bear on the island!" over the radio. We sound the alarm and get inside. The polar bear went and swam off the island. After we made sure it was long gone we went thru the camera footage. It had been on the very small island for about an hour watching two of our guys work on equipment and walk around as we do. It's scary knowing that it's going to be non stop night soon so spotting them then it's near impossible till they are right on the island with us.
