How to Survive a Plague
"How to Survive a Plague" documents the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of activist organizations like ACT UP and TAG to take on Washington and the medical establishment to help identify and approve promising new drug treatments.
This excerpt from director David France's Oscar nominated film features archival footage from the television show "Crossfire," in which activist Peter Staley goes head to head with opponents from the left and the right.

I remember Peter as a Freshman at Oberlin. I remember his roommate commenting his sophomore year that Peter used to "watch TV " as part of his macro-economic homework. :) I am proud to be one of his classmates and grateful that there are people like Peter out there doing this work.

Governments also have a responsibility to protect citizens from disease outbreaks through education, funding of research, laws which protect patients from discrimination and the fostering of a generally enlightened, tolerant attitude toward minorites which are particularly at risk for risky behaviors.
