Let's be honest, long haul flights can be a BEAST, and it's hard to know how to survive a long haul flight. They're boring, and exhausting. You end up getting off the plane feeling gross, dirty, dehydrated, and tired. Over the years, I've compiled a list of flight tips to hopefully make your next long haul flight better than the last. I am also a Registered Nurse, so I am including a few health tips that you may have never heard of.

She’s right be sure to walk around during those long flights. I had a stroke on a 10 hour flight from Europe. My doc described it as a “ blood clot shower” in my brain. Felt weird and disoriented when we landed but didn’t realize it was a stroke until the next day. Was hospitalized for two days. It was a major stroke with permanent damage to my vision and speech but I’m lucky it wasn’t worse.

Omg yes! Staci I have been doing that "get acclimated to the time zone before the trip" for 20 years. People think I'm nuts as I'm getting up at 2:00 a.m Pacific. the day of my trip so I can be ready for the time zone in Europe when I arrive. But I tell you it really really works. It's a minor inconvenience before leaving on the trip for a couple weeks getting up earlier every day. But it's so worth it when you arrive and you're not jet lagged. You don't need extra sleep. You're not feeling sick for 3 days. Etc. And since a lot of the European flights from Seattle are overnight red eyes, it helps me sleep better on the airplane as well. I cannot recommend this enough.

Yes if you have the time, it is so helpful so I don’t lose any time on my trip with jet lag. Safe travels!
Thanks for the tips!
You usually cannot pre-adjust to the new time zone as it conflicts with your flight schedule. What works best for me is, get to the hotel asap when you arrive, nap for 90 minutes (set an alarm clock!), then immediately live in the new time. Works for me.

As a short person, I have the same problem with my feet not really even touching the ground. On my last long haul flight, I got a foot hammock. And it was a game changer in terms of comfort. Thanks for the tips! One tip I got from another video that helped me tremendously is something called Airline Pockets. It slips over the tray so you have a clean surface, plus it has pockets so your phone, charger, etc are right in front of you. Also, someone recommended having face masks that you can use to moisturize your skin several times during the flight.

Hey Gordon, I may have to look into those pockets! Thanks for watching, and the tip!
The bathroom lines get long when people change outfits etc. in there while people who actually need to use the facilities for the purpose they were intended for. Plus the bathrooms are so small your fresh clothes will be soiled while changing into them. You can change outfits at the airport as soon as you arrive - where there is more time/space.

Very informative, love the Anti Jetlag tipps! Just wanted to mention to be aware that in some countries and continents e.g. Asia it is not normal for a woman to wear leggings as a normal outfit, only for sports. If you dont want to be stared at by random men, i recommend wide cotton pants or slacks as a better alternative.

Extremey lucky on one occastion to fly business class Qantas - found coming in to Australia that the bathroom (toilet) occupied by women getting changed including make up and hair before landing and the 20+ minute wait when you only actually want to empty your bladder inconsiderate - and that included being in a cue with both male and female passengers. Checked restrooms in first class and business class - same deal for the rest of us - long cues. It would be good to have change rooms on planes and leave the bathrooms to those who actually need them.

Hi there and welcome! Yes it would be great to have a changing room. Usually, I only do a quick change (I wear simple clothes that are quick to change) and I do everything else in my seat. I struggle with the advice: try to SLEEP during the flight. And: GET UP and MOVE FREQUENTLY. 😅 I’m usually too excited to sleep (and have trouble sleeping while sitting up). Great tips! A couple of things to add for bloating and dehydration: 1. drink Gatorlyte, some other electrolyte concentrated drink, followed by lots of water. I would say don't do your makeup in the bathroom, other people need it for the actual bathroom. I take a compact with a mirror that has my eye shadows and blush in it and use this and do it at my seat before landing. Not a fan of leggings for flying, prefer a loose knit dress in black that can be layered, or a loose knit pant like Spanx air essentials. Layering is definitely key!

Hi Penny! I don’t usually do my makeup in the bathroom. To be honest, I don’t wear much makeup at all. When I do get up to get myself changed or wash my face, I make an effort to do it when others won’t be awake. Being respectful of others is my #1 effort each time I travel. I’m so happy you’ve found your best travel outfit! It truly makes the entire flight experience so much better when you’re comfortable. Safe & beautiful travels!
Not just any earplugs…I found these lt gray ones that work wonders! They have three separate “flaps” that lead up to the end that goes into the ear and they take out 90-95% of the sound - I wear them all the time and I don’t even know we had a severe storm until I wake up (or one of them slides out of my ear…naughty!). I had fun watching your video - I do reps for leg strengthening in the back of the plane. CSI had an episode on clots forming if sitting too long.
Great video, do you suggest compression socks? I’m 6ft tall, will be going on economy 9hr+ and 7hrs+ with just 2hrs layover in between.

Yes I would recommend using compression socks, but you may want to discuss this with your doctor before using if you have additional diagnosis like lower leg/ feet swelling or circulation issues. It is so important to be sure you get the correct size on the socks. You want them to be snug enough to actually do the job but not so tight that they further restrict circulation.
If you can buy water after you have gone through security or bring your own bottle and fill it up because at age 57 water is best for everything you do

Hi there! Thank you for your dedication to your profession and for taking travelers like myself to our destinations. This video is for newer flyers or those who aren’t pro’s at flying, such as yourself. That said, one should still be getting up every couple of hours and staying hydrated, even at an office job. Sitting 8 hours in one place isn’t great on the body and those smaller vessels that could use the increased circulation. Thanks so much for watching!
I -hate- No. I loathe air flying. Should I take dramamine how long before taking off? When should I eat before boarding? I am flying to Oslo at one time soon from west coast.
@gotravelwithstaci
Жыл бұрын
Hey there! What about flying do you dislike the most? I wouldn't encourage taking Dramamine unless you already know flying makes you nauseated.... unless you're taking it to sleep. There may be better options for sleep aids if that is the case, so talk to your doctor prior to your trip. You can eat at any time prior to boarding, but be sure to use the restroom before getting on the plane because it causes traffic jams in the aisles during the boarding process with people trying to go use the loo. If flying does make you nauseated, try keeping your diet that day bland, with few carbonated beverages. No alcohol. Be sure to stay hydrated with water. Hope this helps!
What about putting on facial moisturizer and then makeup on top of that??
@gotravelwithstaci

You can definitely do that. I like to reapply moisturizer or SPF on flights though so I skip makeup altogether when I can. Nobody on that plane gives a hoot if I have makeup on 😝

Question: when you brush your teeth in an airplane bathroom, do you use the water coming out of the tap, or do you bring water in with you?
@gotravelwithstaci
Жыл бұрын
Hi Renee and welcome! Personally, I take a bottle of water with me to use. That is just me. I also am sure to keep my toothbrush off the counters or touch anything that may have germs on it. I only brush my teeth on extremely long flights where I have been asleep (10+ hrs.). For shorter flights, I'll wait and brush them in the airport bathroom after I land.

What is a long-haul flight? How many hours is considered to be a long haul flight?
@gotravelwithstaci
Жыл бұрын
That number is up to you. For me, long-haul is anything longer than domestic (USA) so…7+ hours. My usual long-hauls are to Europe which averages 9-10hrs each way. We also took a 16.5 hr flight on our honeymoon 😳 The best rule is to get up and move around every 1-2 hrs while awake. I do this even when at home to keep the blood flowing when I’ve been sitting a ton.
Hello! Great tips for long haul flying. If you don't mind me asking... what brand of leggings are you wearing in this video? Believe it or not, I am having a difficult time finding just plain black leggings with side pockets! I have a brand of leggings that I like, but they do not have plain black! I would appreciate the tip, thanks!

I believe they are an old pair from Fabletics that they don't make anymore. These actually have a hole in the bum so I set out on a journey to find some I love with pockets and was lucky at Athleta. Check out their leggings with pockets. They are so soft, very forgiving, and well-made. They will last a long time.

Great video! What is your opinion about compression socks on long flights?
@gotravelwithstaci

💯 recommend compression socks for long flights. Just be sure to get the right size so they compress, but aren’t so tight they create more issues. Also be sure you don’t have any underlying circulation issues that might contraindicate the use of compression socks.

Compression socks? Yay or Nay?
@gotravelwithstaci
Жыл бұрын
Hi Omar. Personally, I enjoy compression socks, especially if sitting for a while. The key is to look at the manufacturer size guide to be sure you get socks that fit correctly. You don't want them to be too loose that they don't do anything, but also not too tight that they decrease circulation further. They also make some fun patterns!
Notice after watching 100s of videos , nobody ever says what they actually do during the trip with their water bottle, comfy clothing, etc.

I've only seen one article recirculated through many outlets saying that leggings made of alternative fabrics (think Lycra and Spandex, Polyester) *could* increase skin burns if you and your plan are on fire when compared to organic fabrics like cotton. Personally, I feel that if I am in an airplane disaster or on fire, I have bigger problems to worry about than what pants I'm wearing. Otherwise, I haven't seen where any airlines restricting or banning wearing leggings. My experience would tell flyers to focus more on footwear. If an airplane emergency happens, inadequate footwear is going to restrict your exit from the plane. I would also add keeping shoes on while flying is equally important so you aren't trying to make an emergency exit barefoot. Thanks for stopping by, Judy 💗

I encourage people to be patient with crying babies and their parents. They have as much right to be there as anyone else. They are probably going to visit family. Babies do cry and a parent can’t always stop them. It’s very tiring to be a parent with a baby or toddler, travelling on your own, so please be compassionate and kind. Yes, earplugs are good too.

I agree- sometimes it is so hard for them. It is much better to try and help out and be supportive. We were all babies once, and you never know why people are flying- it could be for really stressful reasons ❤❤❤

It can be helpful to have infants suck a pacifier or drink/nurse during takeoff to equalize the pressure in their inner ears. Also bring chewing gum for anyone to avoid earache while ears adjust to pressure changes. Babies and small children can't always explain why they are upset.

Bahahaha, "change your clothes in the bathroom." Seriously, by the end of that long haul flight the bathroom is beyond disgusting, there's no room so where do you place this change of clothing, the floor is sticky, and I'm not standing barefoot or even with socks on that floor to remove my pants. I wait until I arrive at my hotel, then I'll take a quick cool shower, which helps wake me up, then change into fresh clothes.

I usually apply makeup at my seat and not in the toilet, and am also extremely fast with any bathroom use to be considerate of others needing the loo. Thank you so much for watching ☺
I disagree with your travel outfit. In many countries, a woman in leggings is perceived as walking around half-naked. It is disrespectful. My husband, who is just a regular American guy, dislikes it intensely. He calls it the "no-pants look." And don't those snug leggings dig into your crotch after a while? They would for me.
@gotravelwithstaci

Hi Merry and welcome. What works for me may not work for you and that is ok. Personally, my travel outfit works perfectly for me and the type of traveling I do. The pants are more stretchy than they look, preventing any issues with bloating or riding up. I understand the concern in some cultures about tight-fitting clothing, and I would adjust my packing to align with the appropriate clothing when visiting those areas. As of now, I haven't had any issues or pushback wearing leggings in over 20 countries I've visited.
