The course contains around 3 hours of video, quizzes and a copy of my book 'How to get an A in maths.' All the way through to GCSE and just in time for revision.
This video is all about how to subtract or takeaway difficult fractions and forms part of a number of playlists including 'working with fractions (kzread.info?list..., 'answers to tough questions' (kzread.info?list..., and 3 minute maths (kzread.info?list....
The video looks at the question 5 1/3 - 2 11/12 and I use the idea of 'equivalent fractions' in order to make the calculation as simple as possible. There's more explanation on my post www.3minutemaths.co.uk/?p=4740....
I hope the video helps and please do leave a comment - thanks!

that method confused me. i found it easier to convert the mixed fractions into improper fractions. 5(1/3) = (16/3). 2(11/12) = (35/12). then use the least common denominator method. (16/3)-(35/12) = (64/12)-(35/12) = (29/12)=2(5/12).

Hi - yes, and it’s a good method that I also use. The only difficulty is if the fraction is quite large or difficult to multiply …. Something like 6 97/134 - 4 83/97 would get quite tedious 😀

i did the same, multiplication got bit tedious so got calculator out. i guess with this i learned is to have a glance at denominators first to see if one can be brought to parity easily before converting to improper fractions.

Hi - do you mean around 1.40? The difficulty is that you can subtract the 5 and 2 .... but not the 4/12 - 11/12.
