How to Strengthen Your Falsetto Singing Voice |
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Falsetto. Many people just call it head voice…but there’s much more to the distinct register known as Falsetto. What is Falsetto, and how can we use it more efficiently in our singing?
For some singers, the term Falsetto can be a confusing one. I think mostly because when we talk about falsetto, we’re talking about the more extensive subject of voice registration, which is a massive conversation and quite a controversial topic to boot.

When you get to those low notes its natural to switch to your chest voice. Your falsetto voice is meant to sing high notes, and when you sing low enough you automatically try switch to head voice. If you practice you can remove those cracks and switch between head voice and chest voice without a problem. A good example of this are yodeling singer's. They can switch between chest and head voice very quick and is very impressive
I was a band singer in high school and probably due to lack of practice I lost my falsetto register in my 30s. Trying to get its back so I am very grateful for this exercise.

This is very interesting... i think the variability of voice its what give us power even in every register singularly. Thats why i practice every single day head voice, chest, and mix. After your great lessons im starting thinking that im not practicing a real falsetto, i practice a lot of head voice but with more thyroaritenoid. Lets go into this new challange! :)

I'm not completely sure where my falsetto starts kicking in, but I imagine it starts hitting around E5 or F5. Because if I start singing up there for a few minutes, my voice will start cracking up there if I sing more. There have been a couple instances where I have been able to sing up A5. I use to be able to sing up to G5 before my voice would start cracking. I think it's because I'm kind of more working on my lower range than my higher range.

Prince, Howard Hewett, and Phillip Bailey from Earth Wind in Fire. Listen to keep your head in the sky, it will blow you away!
Good vid. When I was young I could crank Falsetto notes up to C6 (with effort, for sure). But If you don't use it you lose it. Can't crank higher than F5 anymore (since my 30s! In my 60s now). And THAT almost rips my throat out! I'm talking reinforced Falsetto here. Unreinforced falsetto isn't much good over C5 at all. Singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the key the Tokens do it is taxing as hell for me. My current favorite Pop Falsettist is the countertenor for the Korean Quartet "Forestella." Pop-wise, Dimash is really great, too. Russell Thompson Jr of the Stylistics is worth a listen, as an old-schooler.
Wow, thanks for that, I'll will practice it now! 👍🏻😊 Well, I have definitely a problem when it comes to high notes, can't sing them...
Wow! Watching this video made me feel quite stupid. I always knew about this vocal excercise and have done it many times, but I never got the idea to do any vocal excercises in the falsetto register, since it was never taught to me! I instantly felt much more confident in singing with my falsetto and got suprisingly high, to an F sharp!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video Tony. Thanks for watching.
When you access your falsetto in the puppy-dog exercise, you do so at F-sharp, then pitch circle easily down to C & up to G-sharp. You are in falsetto all the time & that's the natural zone where men can 1st access their falsetto. But then you start the "Shee" exercise deep - at A - and sing in head voice. Your head voice starts to struggle where everyone's does - around D natural - & at E you'd topped out. But none of that was in falsetto, because it was too deep for you to access falsetto. You can't easily sing a G-sharp 5, then struggle three minutes later finding a D too high, if you're singing in the same registration. Surely the way to do the Shee exercise must be to start it where you most easily access falsetto - in your case about F-sharp - and work your way *down* until you struggle to stay in falsetto any more, without flicking into head?
Frankie Valli......I used to be able to sing ANYTHING he could sing, I began to lose a lot of the falsetto somewhere in my late 30s early 40s. I'm 69 now and I have not lost any of my high tenor and any of the falsetto I have left is stil strong but l can't do 4 Seasons songs anymore. LOL I miss it. I blew a lot of minds with it.
it is very easy to practice if someone instruct us what to say or read exactly
Pliz do a video for conversion from chest to falsetto smoothly

Head voice is different from falsetto, right? What's the highest note you can sing then? G5, I'm guessing?

Hey Dr Dan, thank you for this terrific video; right in time for thinking about our band working on Scissor Sisters' "I don't feel like dancing"...there is falsetto in 95% of that song! What do you think of the difference, if there is one , "tonally" between a male singing that in falsetto, and a female singing that in her upper register, with TA dominance (which incidentally has been done in various covers). To my ears something is lost, or missing, in the nature of the sound if not done in male falsetto. It might just be personal preference?? P.S. Absolutely love the exercises, and your demonstration of them! Cheers, Lin.

@@DrDanRobinson Dr. Dan: I got stomped into a coma by bikers, and lost my hearing. I cope with that by placing a monitor on a stand and hugging it to my chest. But my teeth are all canted inward, so I can not close my jaw without pulling my tongue out of the way. If I shut my jaw with my tongue relaxed, it is caught between my teeth, and hangs out over the edge, like an oversized burger on a bun. When I started private lessons, my strong high note was F#4, six years later I am stuck at A#3. Do you have a guess as to whether my mangled mouth is just a lost cause?

@@hedleytom Oddly enough, having a louder falsetto is not bad! For my use, I performed Led Zeppelin's First Album with my band last Friday, and I found with Robert Plant's fashion of singing, that having a softer falsetto would be limiting. For Zeppelin specifically, you have to have a louder voice throughout.

For females falsetto switches to f6 if you try to hit c6. F6 is whistle register. And it's hard to do c6 like Ariana Grande. She has a good control of it.

Prince’s falsetto was insane. No cap.
If I try to hit really high notes in falsetto my throat my voice becomes squeezed and I end up way off pitch particularly when I try to push through a note. I have the problem of having a deep voice. I have been told before that I will never have the voice to sing those notes and that I should stick to a lower register. Don't be alarmed but I thought you were already in your head voice when I clicked this link. Really.... Its a bane of my existence to be told all your going to be able to sing is examples such as Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley song. I digress my voice is really squeezed especially if I try to hit a note such as a D5 and sometimes my voice just cracks or is inconsistent. I'm finding it really difficult with my speaking register to relax into high notes. .

I've found that a good way for a bloke to learn how to sing in Falsetto is to practice singing along with female singers in their register, within the song's original key. I've always found lower-ranged females and higher-ranged females much harder to sing along with though, so I've always tended to run with mid-ranged female singers when practicing my Falsetto singing. I guess that'd make my Falsetto register pretty much equivalent to a Mezzo-soprano, right?

My voice tends to break apart quite frequently on the lower Falsetto notes though or coming from high to low in my Falsetto register. So the short and narrow of that is, the higher I sing in Falsetto- (within reason, of course), the less likely I am to crack. Lower Falsetto, on the other hand: danger-zone! o.o

My old singing teacher once gave me some advice regarding high notes, which, for the record, I've never forgot, and which I'd like to share with you and your viewers, if I may, 'cos I believe it may be beneficial. What he told me was this: "Don't try and 'hit' or 'reach' high notes. Instead, let your voice glide up to them like a kite in the wind, close your eyes while you're singing and try and picture that kite gliding higher and higher in the breeze with pretty much no trouble whatsoever. That kite is how light ya want your voice to be when singing the highest of notes. That kite's your voice." I've never forgotten that piece of advice in all these years.

Why is it that some singers, as they age, seem to lose their falsetto- or lose confidence in using it? Is it to do with the vocal folds aging/losing strength? Although the head voice may get lower with age, does this mean the falsetto does too?

@@DrDanRobinson I've found even when I use my falsetto (the regular breathy falsetto the Mick Jagger uses when singing Emotional Rescue) I'm lucky to get above a B4 when I used to get to an E5 or F5 when I was younger. Even if I test it regularly to see how high I can go with it, I never see any improvement toward getting it back above a B4 or C 5 on a good day, and it's not all that reliable enough to be usable anymore.

I have the same problem. What I don't understand is how singers like Paul McCartney (at almost 80 years old) still have their falsetto even though his regular voice sounds like that of an old man. Doesn't seem to be any way to get my falsetto back to the range it was when I was younger, even if I do use it.
Chris Isaak hits a G5( i think), as the last note in the song " Lie to me". He hits it so clean with brilliance and holds it for about 10 seconds. How is that possible as a bariton? I as a bariton myself can reach the note ( on a good day), but i cant get it that clean or hold it that amount of time. Can these exercises get me there in combination with breathing exercises? I know he might have one of the best falsettos in the business, but can these exercises help to atleast getting close to that tone? ( clean it up so to speak)

Is there any limits to how long a singer should use falsetto without damaging his/her voice. It is important to balance your vocal use across each register of the voice. I don't know, however, if the voice fatigues quicker if you predominantly use only one register. I'm guessing it would.
