How to Straighten a Leaning Brick Mailbox

Hope this video helps those trying to straighten their brick mailbox.
I should preface this video with my location and overall situation. I am located in Houston, Texas.... which is known for foundation issues due to soil and clay composition. This is why I needed to use and compact quite a bit of rocks underneath before I found some "solid ground" under the soil. YMMV
I could have left the bottlejack underneath and concreted the foundation, but I have read a lot of negatives regarding oil leakage, so I took an extra step to replace the leverage with some scrap bricks and metal.
Iron sharpens iron as one man sharpens another.

Thank you for sharing - we have exactly the same issue with our brick letterbox. Everything else I have seen involves pumping foam through holes in the slab - which is not accessable in these letterboxes 🙂

Great job! It took me a while to realize how you were using the jack from the video, so I read your words more carefully. Great idea to use the jack to keep forcing rocks down deep into the mud until it eventually formed a stable base.

I'm in the same boat, been looking for over a year and everyone wants to sell you their service, but nobody just showed how they did it on their own until now. Thank you! I have been debating the jack, and didn't realize how much issue I might have with the soft ground, so I'll be prepared with a bucket of gravel/rocks as I lift it up.

@@willbuckhalter8935 Same, if I'm not too lazy about it, maybe I'll film mine as well. I've debated using the expanding fence post foam as an alternative to concrete as well. we'll see. I know they pump that expanding foam under concrete when lifting sidewalks, driveways, etc.

You can also use your truck bumper to push level it with someone watching it and with a blanket in between it, much easier then dig

Pushing or pulling would definitely be easier if the mailbox was reinforced or strong enough. You would still need to contend to the foundation to level it with digging and filling, though. I may have mentioned from another comment that this is the second build. The first mailbox was built solid with a bit of rebar, concrete and cinderblocks... bc, why not. An unfortunate had an epileptic seizure and accidentally hit my mailbox (at low speeds) and almost died. The mailbox shifted, but did not break, totaling the car and sending the driver to Life flight and hospitalized in ICU for a while. We chose to make the latest mailbox hollow and less impact resistant. Even though, it would be the driver's fault for hitting my mailbox, I wouldn't want to revisit that incident again, knowing I could have changed the outcome. I did think about creating a exoskeleton of wood to pull the mailbox, but ultimately thought this video's method to be safest. Your option would be easier. Thanks for the input!

I have to go this for my parents. My only question is, once I dig under the lowest corner to fit the jack and start jacking up the pillar, isn't the jack going to sink? What can I do to stop the jack from sinking once I start jacking up the pillar to straighten it?

at 01:30 , I simply kept adding rocks to the hole my jack created, resetting the height of the jack.. Eventually, the rocks created a pillar deep into the ground that supported the jack. Hope that helps and good luck!

Jaded Worx very informative video ..I have a 4ft x 4ft. entrance column 6ft high with foundations going down about 4ft. These columns support wrought iron gates. One of the columns is leaning away 8" from the other column. I have looked a numerous videos as to how to straighten this column, but most of the videos show columns with accessible (less than 18""deep) foundations. Any suggestions as to how I can straighten this column, or do you have a video showing this sort of problem.

4ft deep! I guess going underneath is out of the question, lol. The only other option (plan b) was to brace/support the opposing side with metal or wooden beams and pull it straight with tow straps. There is always the risk of breaking the column. Perhaps, we can reduce the stress by digging and freeing up the surrounding of the column. Good luck!

Sadly, yes. I live in Houston, TX (near the gulf of Mexico) where the soil is rather soft. In perspective, to repair foundation on a house, it's not uncommon to go as deep at 8 feet of concrete cylinders (spaced 6ft apart) to reach stable soil.
