Would you please consider doing a video for frustrated greeters? The type of lunging and barking (tantrums?) that stems from wanting to greet everyone but is frustrated because the leash prevents them from doing so?

Great video. My next door neighbor and I both have reactive dogs and we've been doing short training sessions every morning with parallel walking on opposite sides of the driveway. Both of us use the "let's go" cue if we see them in the beginnings of re-activity (though we try to keep them under threshold) and it works very well to prevent barking and lunging.

Your videos are so inspiring, your methods of training are amazing. The only reason I didn't give up on my dog was because of your information and tutorials. I have an extremely fearful rescue. Great. Shared it already as an adjunct to a training session - so THANK YOU! I use the "This Way" cue instead of "Let's Go" - but hey, the words are irrelevant, I could be saying "Red Tree"! So even that it a great education point to let people know that the cue you put with the behaviour isn't set in stone. Getting the behaviour first and then adding the cue is more important. Thanks again.

I can't avoid this house as I live on a cul de sac. I do walk on the other side of the road. could I use "let's go" so eventually she'll learn to ignore nutty dog ? or what other method would work ? she's a reduce dog and I haven't had her long

Hi Kikopup, can I ask a question? I have a dog who gets very excited when we train and what started out as the occasional squeak has rapidly escalated into no-stop (literally!) vocalising. I would gladly reward the quiet bits but there aren't any. I've tried just working on everyday behaviours like "sit" or "down" but he even yells then. Help - he's a great dog and I enjoy working with him hugely but this is just deafening.

But ever since he slipped on some tile he moves slowly or freezes on it and wont move unless i help him. Hes gonna be two hundred plus lbs when hes 3 yrs old. so i have time but how do i fix this? I clipped his nails but he still freezes for a bit and then skips happily. is he figuring it out that not all floors are bad?

Excellent training! My SDiT has improved dramatically with her reactivate barking in public and is almost there, but she is still occasionally barking at children. She has regressed over the past few days because of seeing and hearing a very loud screaming, crying preschool child in an underground car park. I’ve been trying your let’s go method and it has helped. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you for all of your wonderful videos.

I suggest doing set ups with a friend with kids who can be at a distance and you can ask them to do predictable things, it would help if you had a trainer on board, but of course I realize in some places its not possible to find a trainer who is not using any forms of physical or psychological intimidation. I wrote this protocol - dogmantics.com/protocol-for-emotional-and-behavioral-modification/

Do you have any advice when a dog won't move when she's about to react? I've taught her "Let's go" and leash pressure. She does fine with those with squirrels and people but when she sees another dog she lays down and just won't move at all, even with a high-value lure. Then as the dog gets closure she has a complete meltdown barking to the point of not being able to hear me at all. I then have to pull hard to get her away and out of sight of the other dog.

Do you have a video for dogs that get over exited on leash when they see another dog? My dog tries to jump to other dogs because she feels a lot of (positive) stress. She wants to play or say hi and gets hyped up about it. From when she was a puppy I have never let her meet dogs while she is on leash, so no I didn’t reinforce it. Although I have to admit that she has her breed and age against her 😂 (1 year old labrador). What I do now is try to distract her, but it stops working when the other dog gets too close. I really want to pass people normally but I can’t when my dog is going wild.

  • @kikopup

Thats a great question. Leave it for me could mean, just ignore whatever it is. Lets go means to move with the handler. So you could use leave it as well, or you could walk past something and use leave it if that makes sense. It depends what you have trained leave it to mean.

I'm an experienced dog owner and know german shepherds but my current 4 yr old will occasionally lunge and go into attack mode with some strangers whilst most of the time he ignores them. I have tried to work out patterns of what strangers look like, their sex, what they carry etc how tired the dog is etc but there seems to be no reason why he does this. I'm wondering if he is just overly protective or perhaps unbalanced as he is a smashing dog but not having owned him in the first year, I think there is vital training and socialisation which he missed. I'm concerned as I'm the only one who can walk him as he is so unpredictable. Do yu have any ideas apart from sending him to a trainer which I won't do as I've had 4 other german shepherds + large breeds often adopted with no issue and I'm beginning to think he may have mental issues

This video is pretty old so I hope you guys see my comment! I adopted my dog about a month ago and was told that she is fully train d however they never mentioned how reactive she is towards other dogs, people on bikes or skateboards or children. Now, it's not ALL children and it's not ALL people so I can't pinpoint what exactly is making her react. She's a very quick leaner but she REFUSES to listen to me when we are outside and I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong? I always have her favorite treats handy and our walks always last longer than 15-20 minutes so she can learn control on her leash and I tell her commands at random times so she understands I'm in control. Do I just need more time with her?

Hello Danni! I hope you get this comment. You may need to work on basic obedience inside. She isn't intentionally not listening to you. She just isn't used to performing those commands outside, and probably doesn't understand what you want. She is probably over threshold, or hasn't been worked with on basic obedience outside. Keep treats high value (turkey, chicken, cheese) and super small. Watch her body language before she reacts. Her tail may go up, or stiffen. She may become alert, and focused on the stimulus. Before she reacts, right as she sees the stimulus give her her favorite treat, and if you are too close for her to focus on you use " lets go" , pat your leg or make kissing noises and turn the other way to a better distance so she remains under threshold. The more you practice, and reward the better she will listen to you . You don't need to tell her commands to let her know you are in control. You may ask her to do commands, so you can better her, and yourself to work together an collaborate as a team.

Also, set up scenarios, at a large park, or area where you can control what and where the stimulus goes, and does. I highly recommend the book Behavior Adjustment Training 2.0 (BAT2.0), By Grisha Stewart. It will really help you.

I would say even if your dog starts to react, turn and move away. If you can't move, you are trapped for some reason, I suggest saying a quick sentence to the approaching person and their dog. "Can you stop for a second, my dog is scared. Thanks kindly" etc "Could you please turn back the way you came for a minute?". kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZacr5aoe73Qo6g.html Here is a video on how to practice talking in a loud voice, so your dog sees it as something positive before you have to use it around other dogs.

It does work for every dog, or at least every dog Ive worked with for the last 15 years, but for every dog the steps might need to be broken up smaller. For most dogs they might need to learn Lets go in their living room for two weeks to condition the behavior with no distractions, then add distractions in the living room. The dog also might need training sessions to be conditioned to finding food reinforcing when outside. I personally like to teach a settle out and about as the first thing a dog does out and about to learn to take food if they are too aroused or fearful to want to eat. Once you get the dog conditioned to wanting to work for food out and about you can then start working on different behaviors.

Does this mean you have to carry treats with you on every walk??? What ... what if they realize you dont have treats anymore

  • @kikopup

No you can train the "lets go" and other behaviors in your house and yard, and work on them out and about near your home if you dont want to have treats on the walk. With behaviors like leash walking and direction changes and recalls out and about you can use the environment as the reinforcer for the behaviors very easily, instead of treats.

+Robert Masters No, it's more about having the not see it coming until after the behavior. That way, the dog doesn't ignore the cue, or use your treat hand as the cue.

Its not for everyone- you can use a marker word like "yes" Here is a tutorial on how to follow my videos without using a clicker kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2p2j7NtXdHXfso.html Because I do a lot of tricks where I need to use both my hands (say the dog gives me High Ten), I often dont use a clicker to train them. I always use the clicker in my house when my dogs off leash, and I am teaching a new behavior or concept. Then when the dog gets the initial step I usually move quite quickly to using the "yes". I think its easier to pinpoint when to mark when you see a video with a clicker. Thats why I like to use the clicker in videos. Also I am able to talk to my students in a seminar, at the same time as marking and reinforcing the dog. Its much harder to talk when you have to stop to and say "yes" all the time.

I am in NO way as awesome as Kiko, but hopefully this can help. If you go on her website dogmantics . com / free-video-list / There are some great videos that can help. I'd really focus on calm behaviors, the barking videos and attention work. The barking on a walk video is fantastic!

gypsycaravan By all means watch the video featured that is called " How to be completely dominant over your dog- dog training". Uploaded by the same individual. The one where she sticks her face into a dogs face, whilst growling on all fours. If it's supposed to be some joke, or a demonstration of "what not to do with your dog". It is not stated, posted, or described anywhere. In fact, based on what she has put in the title and description. This is supposed to be a serious training video. I don't know how it possibly could be a serious training video. The techniques demonstrated are not only ridiculous. But incorrect, potentially harmful and dangerous. Let's hope that someone's child doesn't end up watching it, and getting themselves seriously injured or worse,as a result of it. That is exactly why I posted my above comment. Too many people are already being injured and killed each year by attacks from domesticated dogs. Especially children. Dog training is no joke. It is something that needs to be done both professionally and correctly. Besides, I didn't read anything incorrectly. It says it plain English, at the beginning of the "dominance" video. That ALL the dogs and people featured are just ACTORS. I didn't say, state or post that. The uploader of the video did. So far, there is nothing I have seen. That screams out "Professional Dog Trainer". Besides, I'm not the one who has posted contradictory statements to the fact. So which one is it then? Dog trainer or actor?

***** Do you think that a small child even knows what a satire is? Exactly my point. One small statement within an entire video. One, even I managed to miss. In fact based on many people's comments, it is extremely clear that the uploaders message or intentions for these videos, is extremely unclear. Being straightforward and clear is a necessary element when it comes to dog training. Especially when children are concerned. Out of all the dog training videos, I have watched on You-Tube. Everybody else has been clear and straight to the point. Certainly no demonstrations of "not what to do".

Titan Dragon And when exactly is a small child going to understand how to look up dog training videos on youtube and then see that and think she's serious? What adult just lets their child browse youtube? Her videos are directed to, and created for an adult to young-adult audience. Did you watch the entire video and read the description before making any judgement? I could be wrong, but given your reaction, i'd say you didn't. It's a little hard for anyone to miss the fact that the other video was satire. You also completely contradicted yourself by saying that she never stated or implied that her satirical video was satire, and then you agree that she actually DID state it was satire. Please watch more of her videos before you suddenly decide that she's fake. She's clearly an experienced (and excellent) dog trainer. If you'd taken a little more time to learn about her before your made your judgement, then maybe you'd have caught that.
