This is one of things I’ve been working on with my rescue. It’s a great way to build trust as those distractions increase in intensity. Remember how multidimensional dogs can be and really try to respect what your dogs tell you it’s never “out of the blue”

You are sooooo organized in your thoughts and you explain so clearly. You give a summary of your main theme, announce the points you'll be making, describe each point in detail, relieve our anxiety by letting us know more knowledge on that point is about to be presented, you demonstrate clearly, and you wrap it all up with enthusiasm and encouragement. This organizational level keeps the listener engaged and calm. You're a natural teacher! Question for a first time dog owner here: isn't a walk for exercise and elimination? How would we accomplish those two things if we're using the V method and essentially not covering much ground? Where is the exercise? when do they eliminate? If this training lasts 5 minutes or so as you suggest, then how to we "walk" them or do we just go back inside?

I jut found your tiktok which led me to your Ig which led me to your KZread. And girl I al so happy I found you. Good content. I’ve struggled to find a video that outlined this as well and as realistically as you have done. Most videos do not explain the keypoints in that you need to start out in a low distraction, and that the expectation of what a walk is will change. Mainly you may not be able to go for a real walk for a while until the dog understands the concept. Love it. Not sure if you have a video of you doing this with an untrained dog but would love to see this same video redone with either voiceover, text or just talking but working through the first session or a series of sessions with a dog who is untrained. There is so little content on the internet addressing small dog (mini dachshund) training, especially with reluctance to walk due to anxiety. My husband and I can’t get our dog to walk with us separately, however, if we are walking together with him, taking the very same route he’s fine. Just got a 22 month old American Akita female. I had one years ago and never got another dog until today. I watched your video and after our long ride home and settling down a bit, I wanted to take her around the block. Your video proved invaluable as being new to me and the surroundings all she wanted to do was sniff. She did not want to go back when I performed the maneuver as if we just came from there, why are you going back? I firmly moved her back into step with me. This is going to take some time and thanks again for letting us know the importance of our focus on the dog so they can focus on us. They way you explain it makes it allllll MUCH CLEARER. The what, the how, AND the WHY. I got “why” we were doing it. But you gave me an understanding of much more of the why. Specially why the “V” shape is so important and the how -right down to the pivot foot-these two things were HUGE GAME CHANGERS for us. I have a Malinois that thinks she is a sled dog. Every training video I have watched has you turning away from the dog and popping the leash. My dog has Wobblers so I can't use a collar. I have to use a harness or I will damage her neck. Turning into the dog makes so much more sense. Your technique is just what I need.

This video alone helped with my reactive dog. By far better than the 500$ training I paid for! Thanks!

I do think that the right hand turn (dog heeling on left) has some value also though. I’ve found with a couple of really soft dogs, the walking into them spooked them a tiny bit. Did the trick in terms of pulling without a doubt, but they started keeping their distance when heeling. I rehabbed that with luring into heel position. It works though, and kudos for the excellent demo!

Thank you so much for the free educational videos! Question about choosing a side for the dog to walk on every time. What if you are training an individual dog to get them ready to walk with other dogs once they've learned leash manners or training for someone else and you don't know their preference yet (we foster for rescue)? I usually walk with at least one dog on each side of me. Would it be better to walk with both or all three dogs on the same side instead? If so, can you explain or make a video on how you hold the leashes? I am wondering about being able to correct one single dog only if I needed to. Many thanks in advance for any answers you provide!

I made the mistake of allowing him to go up to people and other dogs (they approach my puppy first and I don't like going up to anyone)... And now, he has a very hard time not going up to everyone and every dog. I will definitely implement what you've taught here, thank you! And to also do my best to step aside and move away from anyone who tries to come up to my pup. Sigh, this one is going to be rly hard.

Do you have any tips for training a 5 month old pup to walk beside a wheelchair without getting caught up in the casters or getting ahead and pulling me from the chair? I've tried having dehydrated smoked chicken in my hand but that only seems to work until she sees some grass to go and eat.

I use the word, "Break!"

Just wondering the best course of action when you don't have a fenced in yard for them to relieve themselves in first? Set a designated area where they can go before the walk still on leash? Set up an area with a long training lead? Structured walks where part is training part is bathroom time?

Do you use any sort of food/treats at all while leash training, or is the V step pretty much all you need? Your videos are excellent, thank you for sharing them!

@@methodk9 why never food? I guess you don't want to become dependent on it but won't you be able to fade the food away after a while? I started doing this similair technique with food and a clicker.

Thanks for sharing this video. I’ve had some success with this maneuver, but my dog seems to figure it out. She’ll be soft and in a nice heel when we’re going one way (the way she doesn’t want to go), then begin to pull ahead when we change directions and go the way she wants to be going. Any advice?

Your left turns need to be faster, sharper, and more often.

I live in a pretty busy area so I cant think of an area that I can somewhat control besides my fenced in backyard (6ft privacy fence).Is it bad to do it in my backyard? I am just wondering due to my 6 month old German shepherd maybe associating the backyard with activities he does off leash such as playing with my with my 6.5 year old pitbull. Or is okay as long as my other dog is not outside during training?

Do u necessarily need prong collar for this manoeuvres?? is slip leash sufficient? Plz advise

After we are done the walk I usually give my dogs treats. Do I stop that? Also I have two dogs, should I take them separately for walks?

How much time should be spent on each walk before finishing that session?

So 1st that was a wonderful video and very informative and I love that you don't use a choke collar. So what about if say my dog is about 2 feet away peeing on a tree and all of the sudden my neighbors crazy dogs come out(silly example) how do I get in that position quick enough? Or do I never give the leash that much slack for him ? Like the other day I was bending over to pick up poop and there was 2 dogs across the street so my dog literally pulled me across the street bc I wasn't in position to support myself.

Method K9 our newly adopted 4yo husky mix won’t go potty in our yard so we have to walk her 3x a day to go. She is horrible on the leash- I want to incorporate this maneuver but since the walks are for the purpose of going to the bathroom, is this not applicable?

@@jwiener1 I know it sounds awkward, i incorporated some of her advice, so what I do is 1st out of my driveway I let my dog pee really quick, than I've been holding the leash with very little slack keeping him on my left side always, like I used to let him walk ahead of me and he would be moving to the left than the right , all over and pulling. So I stopped that and am very strict now. he is always on my left and I never let him move from my side only a few extra inches when he starts to try sniffing the grass to potty. And my dog is about 110pds dobi/lab mix so I know the struggle!!! Method k9 gave me some pointers and I've been practicing that move she does to distract the dog when another dog is approaching. Like that K-Turn thingy she does. honestly since I've been really strict with keeping my dog on one side of me with little slack, he's been walking much better- barely pulls now at all (well bc I never let him have that option bc he stays so close now) but also bc it seems like the dog is not pulling as much since he knows now he can't go very far lol. And as you can see I posted 1 month ago, and I've been seeing a difference already the past 2 weeks! Maybe you can start walking your pup several times, instead of just his regular potty walks so you can practice together until you start to notice a difference. Also Methodk9 uses tiktok and she gives alot of great tips to follow. Check her page out, she's been extremely helpful for me!!! Good luck!!!

How do you build up to walking with two dogs with still being under control and both of them being in a loose leash?

How effective is this method without a prong collar? I need to be able to use a flat buckle collar to pass my dogs obedience test

It's one of the few techniques I have found that works regardless of the equipment being used.

How can i implement this method with my reactive dog who barks/lunges at other dogs? Would i still do v turns even if the other dog is coming towards us? Or step aside and do it like on the grass?

My dog is a husky she is 4 months when i open the dore after 0.000001sec she start to pool as a crazy any advice please?

Just to clarify, are you supposed to make enough v turns to continue in your original direction or are you supposed to change the direction of the walk?

I think it is less about a long walk and more about getting him to pay attention. You may not get very far in the beginning.

Can we train on walks with two dogs at the same time or it has to be one at the time ??

Can this be done walking 2 dogs? Should I walk them both on the same side. Right now I walk with one on the left and one on the right.

Yes, try to catch the escalation before the dov turns.

Oof walking is the only real problem I have with my dog. From a pup I think I conditioned him to think outside means to go fast, get all the energy out, leash time means not going slow. Because I mainly focused on just getting energy out so he would be polite inside. Well I did the goal of being polite inside but now he would like to just run and he is reactive to other dogs mostly. People he’s okay with. He’s not way out in front of me, he does stay to one side. He just likes to be half of his length in front of me when I want to have his head next to my leg. But there is always tension and I try to give the quick correction, not pull him back but he’s not listening to it. He is on a prong collar now just so I’m not choking him out and he does listen to it better than other tools I’ve used. He won’t even want to pay attention to me if I have hot dogs. He’s just interested in getting to the destination where he can play fetch or when we go running. When we’re running he still wants to be further ahead but within minutes of keeping him at my running pace he will finally let the leash go calm but stay half his length ahead unless I’m really on him. It’s like I’m fighting to keep him there. I’m not sure if what I think me being calm and actually being calm is the same

I saw him with my bf the other day and he is better with him. When he knows he’s going to the park in our complex to play fetch he does pull on my bf like he does me when walking but not as bad. I think he’s more relaxed and okay with the dog being that half length ahead when I’m not. The dog doesn’t care about squirrels or little critters, I think he honestly just wants to go fast or when he sees a dog he gets excited but had gotten better though. But it’s never that 100%focused on what I’m doing :/ Again though, he doesn’t destroy the house, he’s calm in the house. Doesn’t go to his food until we say okay, not food possessive, not toy possessive. When another dog wants the ball he has he will give it up. He does have slight issues with other dogs with portraying a more dominant energy I feel and certain dogs try to check him and he will check them back and it will go back and fourth and energies will flare up but I’m right there to stop it. When off leash at a public dog park he fallows us around and will fallow is to the gate without making us chase after him or yell a million times. When playing fetch though you have nothing but 100% attention from him and will sit there staring at you and listens the whole time

What kind of collar are you using to walk the dog?

Food is a stimulant. If your dog already struggles with overstimulation on the walk, it's best to work without food.

Method K9 the food would just be another distraction from the learning the task because they’d be solely focused receiving food? I notice you aren’t using any markers, but would you recommend using markers?

Both my boys pull so hard they've drug both my kids as well as myself. Will be trying this out starting today.

I do that milions times. 2 hours walk all the time like this. After 1,3 years it shows results 🤣 but my dog is this way, I need to keep repeting, sometimes milion times over months. IT is Mini australian shepherd pretending to be stupid 😉

Just don't follow when they pull... Simple as that
