How To Stop Sliding In Your Downswing: Part 1

Спорт

This video will show you exactly why you have too much slide in your golf swing, and more importantly, explain how to fix it.
Sliding late through impact can ruin an otherwise sound golf swing. It causes a wide variety of misses and robs you of distance. The remedy is much simpler than you might think.

    Finally I've heard the phrase "floating" back to the left. I've been watching your videos for a while and while paying special attention to hips on the transition I've said to myself "he's just sort of drifting or floating" back to the front side before any rotation starts. And that move gets the player in front of the ball for the desired compression position. Just bumping the hips doesn't do it. You have to float back over just 2 or 3 inches I would guess. Great job on your analysis of these videos.

    Very good info. What I've found I move my whole body to the right a little too much in my backswing, making it inconsistent to return to proper position at impact. By rotating more than shifting I'm able to get back to a better impact position on time.

    This is the best most logical explanation i have ever seen. If the lower body starts very early the position of the arms and hands are automatically correct if they are very loose. i am beginning to understand the concept " start the down swing from the ground up "

    I wish I could find this move. I have slid for so long that changing it feels impossible. I put an alignment stick in the ground so my left hip can not get too far forward but all this causes me to do is spin my hips too fast and the club comes over the top. Then I try to do the lateral movement earlier in the swing and I get so lost. I’ve gone from a plus 3 to a 4/5 handicap because I can not figure this out. I’ve played golf for 40 years and have never been so frustrated. If it wasn’t for my short game I’d be in the 80’s every time I tee it. I’ve basically given up on hitting balls and just work on my short game so I can at least shoot in the mid to high 70’s. So many teachers teaching different things I quit going to them too. The last one wanted pretty much all my irons to be played in the center of my stance… but I love watching your videos! Lol it is really neat seeing how the pros do it compared to us ams. Love watching your videos and hoping someday to figure this out…

    Keep up the good work. Your videos have been very helpful in connecting a lot of dots for me that have just been floating around without the proper context. A couple of questions . . . 1) How are the downhill angles of the hips (10º) and knees (6º) at P3 created? Left Sidebend? and 2) How are the hands dropped below the waist so early in the downswing while maintaining the left wrist set? The freefall of the arms? The un-curling of the right elbow? Thanks!

  • @AthleticMotionGolf

    @AthleticMotionGolf

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, Striker! 1: it's a combination. As you said, left side bend is starting to happen along with left knee flex and hip rotation. 2: this is more difficult to carry that much left wrist set that deep. It's a combo of physical abiltiy and having the clubs CoM staying inside the hands for quite a while. There are not too many pros who are able to do that, but it's also not necessary. A normal amount of left wrist set is more than enough to get it done.

    Love your videos. Just for comparison sake, it would be interesting to see how an old time swing would look using these metrics. Someone like Sam Snead or Byron Nelson, for instance. They seemed to have much more fluid hip and leg action than the modern player does, yet I wonder if they match similar positions at the arm parallel benchmarks.

    I just came across your channel. I love the different perspective you provide on the swing. When i came across a back view of Sergio's iron swing some years ago, i was surprised to see how it appeared to have a slight lean towards the target at the top. I always start my season with that image in my head but get away from it during the season. What i would like to understand better is when watching your videos, drills or thoughts i can take with me to the range. The image is great but for example this video when talking about were the hands are half way down i have seen on other videos where you don't like the concept of holding lag to get to that position. So what are the feelings and moves that putbthe good players in these positions? Sergio has always said he feels like he is pulling down on a chain but it seems you guys may not approve of that thought. Thank you and keep up the great work

    I’m a big component of keeping the feet planted on the ground for amateurs. Misconstrued thought of weight shift hip rotation just about everything. When I feel like it’s more of a balance issue with ams. Keep your feet on the ground stop lifting the lead heel in the backswing and stop lifting the trail foot until after impact. Pros really wouldn’t get all the power they do if they’re swinging off one leg

    I beleive one think amateur golfers have a problem with is not rotating the shoulder in down swing and through the finish. Here is what I found works for me: I fully rotate as your video says, on the downswing, I concentrate on turning my left shoulder and evey thing after that falls into place. Just want to know your thoughts on this swing queu... great videos by the way...

    Perfect explanation of using pelvic tilt to your advantage. I've been working on this move recently and have noticed big improvements in ball striking. I can also swing much more smoothly with less effort. I've always tried to "swing from the ground up" and I've been massively inconsistent with that. Would you say setting the lower body in this "downhill" fashion allows you to in effect "set and forget" the lower body in the backswing and just concentrate on a your shoulder/upper body pivot on the downswing?

    The best way to do is to make really slow coasting swings with your most lofted club... focusing on really feeling that left hip and shoulder staying down. Don't focus on the hands. Focus on the hip and shoulder. Then gradually creep it up to longer clubs.

    Man, this technology is extremely helpful. I’m wondering if the mental switch or light bulb moment is gonna come from just ‘feel’ or reps. Because the slide back to the front foot just feels so different when I think of squatting as opposed to continuing around the backside. Is this just in my head ? The squat (which in my head gets me going back around from where I came from) so it’s like going in reverse on the takeaway then back to forward when I squat really gets me hyper extending and gets my rear end off the plane of glass

  • @AthleticMotionGolf

    Athletic Motion Golf wish I could, guess I’m just trying to repeat what I see Snead do. Squad and get the club to parallel with my knees separated a bit and some weight in my front leg. But I seem to be really moving forward (to the ball) best way to describe my feeling is If address is 12:00 O’clock and the full complete backswing gets me to 6:00 o’clock then I go back around to 6-5-4-3 etc and to my left leg / front leg at about 10:00 o’clock. As where they ‘lean it’ takes me from 6:00 o’clock at the top of the swing to the left leg pressure by continuing around the clock 7-8-9 to 10:00.

    Question---after studying this over and over.......WHAT IS IT exactly that causes the hands to drop from the top and to the belt line level in particular. Is it happening in this pro golfer because his pelvis has leveled out and is it that early RIGHT knee flex that YOU talked about in another video that actually causes the pelvis to level out at this early point? And is that earlier reflexing of the right knee a RESIDUAL push off, or ground force action that does this? And back to the hands-- OR, is there SOME conscious ACTIVE effort of the pro golfer to get his hands to that belt high point.

It does feel like I am surfing to the left leg but left shoulder is down and tilted to the left and my right my hip stays too far back. What Am I doing wrong?

    Hi guys, very interested in your channel and following this vid I'd like to ask you clear something up for me as it may help me understand this hip movement. Should the movement feel like a pivot from the right hip to pivoting on the left hip, like the hips are the fulcrum to pivot on or am I so far from it I'm just showing how confused I am?

    I always thought (I choke on the words as this is the nemesis of golfers) that the left hip joint was to stay inside the left ankle through the downswing. This golfers seems to have his left hip outside the left ankle near the end of the downswing. Clarify or correct please. Thanks.

    How does this work with a driver? You want to be hitting up on the ball, right, and it seems like if you have a "downhill swing" with a driver you've got a problem. So how do you modify this lesson to fit that situation? Or do you? Thanks!

  • @AthleticMotionGolf

    @AthleticMotionGolf

    You'll notice in the video that the downhill shift allows the player to get some pressure on that left leg early. That gives the golfer something to push up on. That push up is what will provide the right amount of side bend necessary to have that good angle of attack with the driver. Because the ball is more forward, that angle of attack happens very naturally from the same movements. Make sense? We actually should do a video showing how it all happens with a driver. Great question!

  • @tongzilla
    @tongzilla6 жыл бұрын

    As with anything in golf, you can always overdo something. How do you deal with someone with too much reverse tilt at the top (“backward bend”)? According to some body measurement device in the market, that’s a problem i I have. I suspect it’s my effort to try and surf downhill like you guys teach. But I just end up reverse tilting and then surfing level then uphill.

    The device being used and where the sensor(s) are matters a lot when looking at this. The easiest point of reference is to just look at a good video from this behind angle (or face on if that's all you have). You want an very neutral looking vertical upper body during the transition. Overly bent too much in either direction won't be good. The hips having enought tilt is a big part of the transition. Trying to do it with level hips won't really work as well.

  • @AthleticMotionGolf

    @AthleticMotionGolf

    5 жыл бұрын

    Mike, the key to that is often in the timing. If the move forward is too late, there's not enough time to stop it and you wind up sliding through impact. Ideally, the move forward is early enough so there's time to stabilize and rotate through impact.

    Obviously with the hard/software package you use it can show the swing in high detail. However very difficult to just use these 'degrees' as a training tool. That can quickly fall into 'position golf' which has led to many amateur's (and a few pro's) downfall. So these videos are like a reference tool. Correct teaching and implementation by the student will benefit from comparing his/her angles during or after the lessons. As for putting these into play...you need the teacher to put it into just the right phrasing that somehow acts as a lightbulb moment for the student. Would like to see what exercises/drills you guys advocate?
