HOW TO STOP RATS OR MICE FROM ENTERING YOUR HOME

This video explains how to create a physical barrier to prevent rodents from entering your home. We just purchased a home built in 1946 with a few additions added to the main building. It was pretty easy to identify entry points for the rodents. If you have a similar house with this issue, take a look in the crawl space, all the way around the perimeter of your home, soffits, around windows, along gutters, look for tree branches hanging near the roof. Loose or damaged fascia boards can also be a point of entry into the attic for rodents and small critters (rats, mice, squirrels, etc...)
It's always best to treat the cause and not the symptom, so focus your energy on physical blocks instead of traps and poison. Listening to an endless stream of rats dying in your attic while you are trying to sleep is not the most fun you'll ever have.... The satisfaction of knowing they have no way to enter your home will make you sleep much better at night! Do all of your repairs during the day while the rodents are out and about. If you have any stuck in your home after putting up physical blocks then it is time to lay traps.
As mentioned previously, we have just moved in and this has been our top priority since we first heard them in the attic. If you let something like this go on the damage done to your home can be enormous. If you can, check all electrical wires in your crawl space and attic for teeth marks or chewed insulation and have any damaged wires replaced immediately.
All supplies I purchased for this came to under $20. This could literally save you $1000's of dollars, if not more!
Good luck, and happy patching!

It's crazy that it's not standard practice for new homes being built to be rodent proofed, since it's ridiculously easy to do it that way; whereas trying to do it after the house has already been built is incredibly difficult.

The main problem I've found is sloppy workmanship compounded over decades on an old house. Most new homes are fairly well sealed off to start with... but eventually the little buggers will find their way into anything if you don't maintain your property

@@studiogertrude1165 On the contrary, mesh and steel wool properly applied will accommodate shifting and settling. I knew a family with a brand new upper-middle class house that had a huge mouse problem within a few years. The kids stashed candy around, and the mice found it and "went to town". But the mice could have been barred from entry had reasonable rodent-proofing steps been taken during construction. When mice find a little gap they can easily chew a little more off and gain access. The only way to counteract that are mesh over gaps, and steel wool stuffed into all the spaces where they would love to gain access. Easy, and not all that much added cost, considering most people that have a mouse problem, even when short of a massive infestation, would gladly pay thousands of dollars to have it end. Add the risk of house fires from chewed wires , and the filth...it's crazy codes obsess about other things, but rodent proofing? Never gets done on new construction

The business working people are too damn lazy and really could care less about the customer's home they are building. I really hate the way these people do. My friend had a new A/C unit put in and she never had mice problems before but after they finished and left open gaping holes she now has a mice problem. I think I would have sued the crap out of them.

use finer (but thick enough that rats cannot chew through it) mesh to stop mice too. They can get through a hole as narrow as a pen

Great video! I am ordering this stuff. What do you recommend for cutting galvanized steel mesh? What about ridge vents? Can I do this in my attic from the inside? Thanks

For cutting this mesh, I would use a pair of side cutting pliers. (Wearing safety goggles). For larger cuts an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc if you have one handy. If attaching the mesh to wood. A heavy duty staple gun is the way to go.
