LOL, let's just hope he bites the right person. If he gets carried away and bites the owner when he reaches 120 Lbs. that will mean a trip to the ER. Mine is already able to do some damage at 3 months so I'm working hard to get him not to direct it at me. If I ever decide to train him for bitework it will be after he has mastered self-control and learned all his other obedience and I'd use someone else as a decoy; never myself.

  • @BabyBugBug

It never comes after first correction. You will have to repeat many times before it clicks. Puppies have the attention span of a gnat. They will only remember what makes the most startling impression on their developing brains, namely stern correction. This guy did great.

I like your comment about playing on the ground. I have done that with my Rotties. They do learn very young to not bite, but when we are down on the floor most of the rules kind of go out the window😉. They can jump and “nicely” nip and growl and tug and bowl me over all they want. When I stand up and say “all done guys” the “rules” come back in place.

Put your thumb in their mouth in under the tongue and press. Not too hard, just enough to have control. It doesnt hurt them. Its just uncomfortable. They dont like it. They stop instantly. Then redirect them by giving them something they can bite. Just be consistent and he will eventually get it. It worked for me. I have an Alapaha.

Because I have not detoured playful puppy biting I am comfortable in letting Jocq mouth me however he does know when he has gone over the line. I like that you showed us how to correct a behavior by getting ahold of the scruff or ear. Will start to implement that into my corrections instead of what I have been doing. Thanks!!!

I think people forget that small, fun-to-chase critters like rodents, rabbits, and other animals scream/squeal when they’re being killed. That’s why dog toys squeak! Saying "owh!!" only encourages a dog by imitating prey.

Good video, very well explained. I try to do both, bite inhibition (stopping the bite) as well as bite force control ( how much pressure they bite with). While it bites on me during play I pet his head by the ear and when they bite hard I pinch the ear applying equal pressure as their bite. Basically showing them when I feel pain. (That doesn't hinder bite work but it does save my ass when the dog bites me by accident.)

I use the scruff technique to. However the vet told me off, they said its where they inject and do stuff, and the dog will associate the scruff grabbing when they try to do something. However a rottweiler even at 4 months old has a real hard bite. So little choice. I agree it's really the only way. Pack leader

Just going back over some of the older videos for reference and was wondering if that little guy chewing your jacket is Gage? He sure has focus on your pocket! Thanks

It’s like training a box cutter. And we are doing great, 16 week old malinois who is typically clumsy (like all puppies) with his mouth BC he is so young, not fully coordinated and immature. He learns so fast, it is just going to take repetition, my confidence, building our relationship, exercise and time to rest …just like a toddler!
