HOW TO STOP HOOKING THE BALL

Спорт

Lots of people want to learn how to stop hooking the ball. This includes average players & better players. What people don't know is there are 2 kinds of hooks. Average players typically hit a pull hook where as better players hit a duck hook. These are 2 completely different hooks so you need to know the difference so you can apply the correct fix.
To stop pull or duck hooking the ball is simple. It only takes a few minutes but again you need the right thoughts and know exactly what to do otherwise you will never stop the hooks with irons, fairway woods and driver.
So if you want to stop hooking the ball then no matter if you are an average player or a better player make sure you watch this tip immediately. Once you fix the hooks you will start to lower not only your frustration but your scores as well.

    Thank you for this lesson, Paul. I'm about a 15 handicap, and I have struggled with a hook for YEARS and never heard that simple explanation you gave for the "duck-hook" player. I went to the range and practiced your "think turn, not shift" and hit about 15 beauties in a row! Excited to go play 18 in a few days. Thanks again.

    Very good. Super simple to fix but when someone doesn't know what to do they are literally just trying to hold off and manipulate the face (which will never work). Just keep this in mind for the future and you will be playing great in no time.

    Started golfing in 2018 and struggled with a giant slice for 2 years. I took about a year and a half - 2 years off when covid happened and played a lot of VR golf on my oculus. Came back this year and was magically hitting a draw! Now several months later im fighting a nasty hook with my long irons and woods. Havent even touched my driver... golf is hard

    It's hard when you don't know how to fix it. I teach my students to fix it on their own. If you are hooking it without trying to hook it your grip is too strong. Make it more neutral: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIWOrtJxkqmTh9o.html Watch you ball. If you are pull hooking it then switch to firing your body. If you body starts first you will hit it either dead straight or with a slight draw. This is 5 mins to fix.

    Love the content Paul!! I've always had a pull hook as my miss and following this tip, I could feel the difference in my good shots vs my bad pull shots at the range today. I now realize how over the top is created with the upper body hitting the ball vs lower body swinging the club. I've watched your content for a few years now and always end up coming back to your channel when I feel like I've lost my golf swing.

    Thank so much. I appreciate it. Yes, you don't want to hit that shot. You need it starting right. This means you need more body to get the tilt. See your shot differently though. You have half right. Everyone dwells on the negative. I like to see the positive. If you are doing have right consistently then get the other half (body). Thanks for coming back. I get this from a lot of people.

    Hi paul This video came up as I was searching for help on why I was duck hooking a driver a couples times a round. It was very frustrating as it has been costing me to break 80. This vid basically cured issue for me as I now make sure I fire my hips through earlier. Went to the range and hit a few balls. Then played a round and didn’t hook the ball once entire round. I love the details that describe the results from a faulty grip and/or swing path (yup, mechanical engineer here). My on-course problems are when I begin thinking distance... I begin to slide and tighten up. Too fast and I'm hooking, arms too tight and I'm pushing right. I know this now, and I need to create a list of reminders and tape it to my golf bag (TURN... I found on a few other videos the idea that you bring the arms down while you drive with the hips. Don’t LEAD with the hips too much. Bring the arms down at the same time as you drive with the hips, so the arms aren’t coming through really late. It’s that late arrival of the arms that causes the hook, club closed down a lot by the time it reaches the ball. So don’t be all hips and lazy with those arms. Get them both going together!

    Glad you liked it. I have been fixing hookers of the ball in minutes for years. So simple to fix. The degrees are the face being closed more than you normally are at impact. You close the face it will hook. A little you get your draw a lot and you get the big hook. Just follow the tip and literally in a few minutes you will be hitting it great. Just need to know what hook are you hitting. Don't drop the ball back. That's a band aid that will never work. Why not get to the root of the problem and fix it. I just explained how.

    The pulls are you adding arms in the downswing. On course it shows up because you are trying to give it a little extra. Arms start first and you send it slightly over the top. So swing at no more than 50% with driver for 1 round and see what happens. Also, don't pick distance targets out there. Hit fairways and greens so pick a close target or one way into the distance that you know you cannot hit. Then swing easy.

    Hey Paul great video as always. I had a question. So I been pretty good with my irons lately. Hitting a 6 iron dead straight about 190-200 but when I hit driver it will go straight but I'm only getting maybe 220 carry out of it. Do you have any idea what I'm doing

  • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    2 жыл бұрын

    Are you sure you're not de-lofting your 6 iron. I hit it 180 so you are blowing it by my. That would also mean you would be flying driver 320. So I think you are changing your grip with the hands too far ahead getting you to de-loft the club. So your 6 iron is a 4 iron. Because the grip is too strong you have to tighten the wrists to not hook it off the planet. Tight wrists = slow swing speed. So the driver goes no where and the irons go too long. Fix your grip first: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIWOrtJxkqmTh9o.html Then do wrist hinge drills to loosen them up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5ODkqprgbGsn5M.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ip9r1puyeKa1Xaw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaOgpNOwiKmZec4.html Once you get that then start switching to body to power the swing. If you don't think you are changing your grip video your swing and you will see that you are switching it to strong just as you take it back. Let me know if I am right.

    @@paulwilsongolf honestly no, it's a high lofted shot that lands pretty soft with the 6. Part of me feels like I get too tight when hitting a driver and or I just start swinging with my arms. So go out and hit a bucket super loose. I can only keep telling you to do this. It is up to you to do it. Super loose. Out of control loose. Do swing up in the air at knee high. Let the tension completely go. Then within 5 seconds step up and apply this same feeling. It should feel out of control. Keep doing it for one bucket. The right wrist rolls over slightly and the ball flight is fairly straight with sometimes a pull hook. Do you think I should try to roll over my wrists more? • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    Жыл бұрын

    You could because the driver is longer and you want to kill it. So you are really pull hooking driver too you just don't see it. So do the neutral grip to reduce the hook spin. Then fire your body first arms follow. Now the irons will be dead straight. Driver quit trying to kill it. Loosen your wrists by doing the roll over drill. Once you can purposely hook it you fire your body. Once you do it's dead straight also. This is literally 10 mins. The problem is you see the pull hook as a bad thing. I see it as half right. Just need the other half. This is all in the Fix Your Own Swing section of The Body Swing. There are 2 drills there that you need to master.

    I like the butt of the club to be about 6" from your belot buckle. Driver a little more. So have the toe slightly higher than the heel at set up. This is important because if the toe is too high you will be too far away and not high enough will put you too close. So toe slightly higher. Then measure from the butt of the grip to your belt buckle.

    This was probably a pull hook not a duck hook. Regardless you check your grip and fire the lower body to hit it.

    Finally someone explaining a bit what a duck hook is. Sounds more like me at hcp17, is it the same thing as 'overdrawing' the ball? Or does it also hit high on the face for some topspin? (hence the ducking?).

  • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    6 ай бұрын

    Well, at a 17hdcp you would be pull hooking it. To hit a duck hook you would need an inside out path. If you started golf as an adult you would be swinging over the top. Better player swing from the inside and release it early thus the duck hook. This could be in the center of the face or towards the toe. The pull hook is different. Swinging over the top and closing the face. Again, could be center of the face or anywhere really. If you actually do have a duck hook it's simple to fix. Put down an alignment stick. More neutral grip. Turn more cause you are sliding. Done. This is all of 5 mins to hitting it perfectly.

  • @pbode1

    Thanks for the explanation. So topspin has no part in in. (As a non-native speaker I still wonder where the 'duck' in duck hook comes from, not from the bird surely?) I do have a in-to-out path by the way, even though I started golf at 29. Always had. I think I have to thank my field hockey past for that.

  • @paulwilsongolf

    Not sure why they call it a duck hook. Maybe because it's low left. Ducking left meaning low. It's also called a snap hook. I guess we could look it up. That's great you have an inside out path. Need be sure to check your grip so it's not too strong. This is what gives you too much hook. Then you need to reduce any sliding laterally so it's not too much. The more you slide the more you tilt which creates the path from the inside. @@paulwilsongolf Great! I have a grip that is on the weak side of neutral. What does seem to help if I steepen my backswing, because I tend to take my club away to the inside a bit too much sometimes: My R10 launch monitor is pretty good at showing me that the more my path goes in to out, the more I close my clubface relative to the path. Funny how the body instinctively reacts to path mistakes. Isn't that a perfect hook recipe? I will check on the slide option too, thanks for the links!

    Snap hooks are my big miss with driver. I tend to hit it straight or slight draw. I have a neutral grip but will sometimes get 1-2 hooks in a round. They usually happen after I’ve just pushed one out to the right so I overcompensate and close face too much next time I hit driver.

  • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    That could happen. The problem is you are trying to fix a direction problem with your wrist hinge. When you push one all you need to do is think about turning. So you see a push. The next swing you hit the top and think TURN. This will stop you tilting too much and you will hit it dead straight. Also could be pushing it cause you are swinging a little too hard and coming out of it. So slow down then you won't come out of it. Done.

    To get it you need to see the grip not as the grip. This is part of a hinge. You know the flap with the screws screwed onto your door? You put the grip on then work on hinging the wrists so they loosen up. Problem has been that you are trying to do the grip and you hit a few bad ones so you quit. You need to put it on as I suggest and keep it on for about 20-30 balls in a row. Tee it up. Hit 7 iron. After that many balls your wrists will loosen and you will hit it straight with the new grip. Here is the grip: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIWOrtJxkqmTh9o.html Then do this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ip9r1puyeKa1Xaw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGx_lamcpM7gZ6Q.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aI6ZttOcqpXWnag.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5ODkqprgbGsn5M.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaOgpNOwiKmZec4.html Get to work.

    For a better player would coming in too much from the inside also account for a "blocked" shot? To be clear, I mean a shot that is basically straight and goes far but is well right of target? Oddly this is my problem with short irons (7-PW) but not other clubs???

  • @paulwilsongolf

    This would depend on the face. If you attacked from the inside but come out of it this would lock your wrists and you would blow it right. Those are more scoring clubs because you think you are going to hit a shot close to the pin so you are looking (coming out of it) to see if you did it. Work on this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipOkqJmxXbKpiLg.html And watch the impact area until after you have hit it.

On occasion I fire my body first but get some dead straight long left drives as a righty, no hook, just straight left. Hey dude... I have followed you for years and pretty much use your relaxed,easy swing... I have worked my hc down considerably, however, I have developed a substantial, basically what i call an overdraw... I basically control it somewhat by aiming down the right of my target line... of course this is ok, but when I need a straight or a fade, it doesn't work.... so my question is this.... can I basically change my grip to what shot shape I need for that hole? Would that be an easy fix If my swing path is frome the inside.. just change my grip based upon what shot shape I need?? Or should I just adjust my club face at address and swing the same?? Maybe I need to come out for a visit!!!

  • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    Жыл бұрын

    This is a problem for sure. If you want to hit a draw it is a falling to the left say 5 yards with irons and 10-15 with driver. If you are really hooking it then you need to neutralize your grip. Now you will be within range to hit other shots. Too much hook and you see you cannot play the other shots. Follow my neutral grip tip here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIWOrtJxkqmTh9o.html As you learn a more neutral grip and want to draw it make sure the lines I talk about go to your shoulder which is little stronger. Don't get crazy strong. Then watch this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXmGxtF8k6-boqg.html I am the face where I want the ball to land. I aim my body left. I swing left. Because the face is set open it fades back. You can also aim left and open the face. Up to you. You are not changing your swing. You are changing your set up.

  • @paulwilsongolf

    You might think your grip is neutral but if you are hooking it without trying to hook it you have a grip problem. A lot of people start neutral then either have their hands too forward, press forward too much or actually change their hands to strong just as they start back. I used to do this. Could have sworn my grip was neutral yet it wasn't. Place your grip on. Hands fairly even with the ball and hit some shots. If so, there is no way you would snap it unless you severely rolled it over.
