Starting to get speed and power but can't stop catapulting!? then this is the video for you. Filmed on a high wind day in Keros I'll go through so key tactics and techniques that'll keep you at speed and control and stop you going out the front door!
As usual the Ride-Along session is brought through a combination of live on-board cameras and microphones, as well as some pre-recorded demos to add some clarification.
Make sure you subscribe to the channel for more coaching videos regularly!
Follow me @cookiesport on instagram for daily tips and updates.
Filmed in Keros, Greece; but my usual spot is Vassiliki, Greece- join me here for a clinic!
Kit used... a mix of Point-7 sails, mainly the Spy, ACX and F1e.
Boards vary too, Starboard tends to be my "go-to" for kit, but also RRD a lot too.
Audio recorded on InstaMic
Filmed on a mix of Insta360 OneR & GoPro Max
Mixture of camera mounts including Fly Mount and Sail Video System
Special thanks to Point 7 sails, Starboard Windsurf & Sungod.

    These videos are really awesome - thank you! I've been windsurfing for about four years now and was starting to get a bit frustrated with the lack of progress. Lockdown didn't help of course but also a lack of good wind days lining up with free days. I have to say that in the last few weeks since I discovered these videos my windsurfing has gone to the next level and I've been able to make every single day on the water count. I'm completly addicted!! My (Simon Bornhoft Warrior) tacks were already pretty good but getting that simple idea into my head of the front hand moving the mast and making space to step into has resulted in 9/10 success in all conditions. Watching you sail so comfortably, with the chosen camera angles, has had the result that I'm blasting much more fearlessly now and popping my feet into the straps with that little "downwind-upwind shuffle" my lines are nicely balanced and I'm sailing with very light hands ... haven't plucked up the courage to go hands free for more than a few miliseconds, but for sure I'm comfortable blasting with the back hand off which I find really helps to know if you are actually in control and the board is properly balanced. I feel as though I will have the gybes nailed in about 2 more sessions... I'm so close and all your tips are inching me towards success. Can't quite get the timing right on the release. When its softer I can sail out clew-first but it doesnt work so good in wind and chop.... i'll get there very soon. One complaint I have is that this not-catapulting video came a little late! I was in Tarifa a few weeks ago and was devastated after trashing the nose of a brand new SSeverne Fox 105. That said, the guys at the rental place were really kind to me, apparently they loved that I came ashore straight away and accepted full responsibility.... apparently some people come ashore at the end of their session and claim that it was like that when they took it! They charged me Euro 75 (not bad). I'm joking of course, and since the "incident in Tarifa" your other tips have raised my confidence and control level significantly. Once again thank you and for sure if I'm ever in Lemnos will definitely sign up for some coaching.

    Hi Rick, Thanks for your epic message- you've set a record there for longest one to date! ;-) giving your self space to move into is key- very similar to the warrior idea from SB, getting away from the rig, opposing the forces that are in play. It comes into tacking, gybing and many other variations of these. If you enjoyed this be sure to check out others in the series- the Elements of Windsurfing, Fast Forward Formula is a good one to really breakdown and understand why we do things and how to fault analysis ourselves as we go. Great video Cookie. Very good explanation about heading upwind to gain more control. I like the part about bending that front arm briefly to gain control/composure, also great advice about straightening the front arm and driving through that extended leg. Windsurfed at the weekend and was planing a lot earlier and for a lot longer, in marginal conditions, than the other guys, but looking at their stance they were bending the front arm and a very upright posture, wanting the wind to do the work! Could have spent all afternoon coaching :-) Keep them coming

    Just to add a little board and money saver: if you do catapult anyway, try to sheet in hard and look back. That way the mast will most probably miss the board and you will land on the downwind side under the sail but in the water. (And that way you learn the frontloop on the fly ;-) )

  • @Cookiesports

    Good tip, works well for experienced windsurfers- when a catapult happens we can feel it a Second before we actually go, and have a split moment to think about it and sheet in...pretty tough for the low intermediate who are just trying to resist a catapult right up to the last second though!

    Ahh man! I think you hit upon something. I've been catapulting frequently as I'm working my way back to the front foot strap (haven't got there yet but almost). I'm planing but barely in balance. I think I am bending my front arm like you said (at 8:30) because once I am in balance when I step back toward the foot strap the board turns sharply upwind from a direct beam reach. Great video! I need to try that! Hopefully I can stop catapulting soon.... I'm riding an old zen board that is huge (I am 6'1") with an 8.5m sail in about 15 knots of wind.

    Hi David, Thanks for the message and really glad you enjoyed this video. There are many more in the series already uploaded, maybe some other "lightbulb" moments will happen as you watch through the rest? Bending the front arm is instant de-power, hence what i'm talking about here- sound like you're doing it by accident though and that's causing the issues as you get faster and step back. Maybe try this video first, think it'll help out a bit for you! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mmFrk7dumLq0g84.html

    My key takeaway: it's about getting used to the power and learning to control it. Instead of practising on a broad reach, like the veterans on my beach do all the time - planing at 20+ knots in 12 knots wind, I should practice on a close reach. Drive upwind a little to de-power. Bear away to increase power. Taking a break today as the wind has died down. Will try tomorrow. Thanks!

All those videos of people standing on the beach simulating things doesnt help me. My biggest need: Im still a novice, I can water-start and I can reach, but I have trouble maintaining a plane upwind. I've had a couple of nasty wipe-outs and I think it has scared me from just 'letting it rip'. How do you get confidence back and minimize your risk of falling forward while planing?

    Stay tuned- video coming soon that’ll really help you. Confidence building… VISION, head, shoulders, hips & Front foot- look up wind. Sails close to the wind slowly, teasing and testing wind strength- not necessarily trying to get going. As you get the feeling your “bear away” won’t take you down wind- not necessary- just slightly off the wind to get going, and as a result drastic let reduce the change of going out the front door! Also- check out “how to stop catapulting” video i made! 👍👍👍

    really great videos!!! as you asked about what could be next video about - I vote - jumping basics! ;) push the back to pop the board, but how much? if you are blasting in outward straps 40+ kmh you need to get over the center of board to do this pushing down with the back leg, but feels like you would loose control, so how do you actually get there over the center to trigger the pop, or maybe it's not necessary... what will happen next? :)

    I told this to my instructor and he told me to NEVER bend the front arm. Which leaves me with the question, where do you bend it towards, to you pull the sail towards you or do you bend the arm to the side, thus leaning the sail to the side like when you want to steer upwind? Intuitively, when I'm about to catapult (which is every 5 seconds), I pull the masthand towards myself and extend my backhand, but this often times lead to a catapult over the windwards side (which is the worst for me)

  • @Cookiesports

    @Cookiesports

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jemand, Thanks for watching and hitting me with this question. If you're instructor is telling you NEVER to bend your front arm tell him/her to watching this video and they'll learn something! I train and qualify instructors; we discuss the importance of bending the front arm at all levels ***with the important understanding of when and why you might do it***...What affect does it have? Why might it be good or bad? For example, the key things bending your front arm does is de-power you. Ifrontyour instructor was trying to say). However, if you want to de-power, or make a quick turn up wind (both of which is the goal if you're trying to stop catapulting) then a quick bend of the front arm is key! Extreme example- a wave rider making a top turn- quick aggress de-power and turn- quick and aggressive bend of the front arm! Where to pull the front arm? The aim is to open the sail so pull towards your body, and then towards the back of the board- extending your back arm at the same time (just like your saying you are).... Which leads me to a differnt conclusion to consider first for you.... if you're going out the front door as much as it sounds like then lets go for a tactical change first- before thinking about the technique..... what I mean by that is lets make all of you're windsurfing closer to the wind- it sounds like you're stuck too far away from the wind. Eithersimply

    @@Cookiesports Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! My instructor is a very good windsurfer, but I think in this case he is just wrong, or didn't quite understand what I was saying. I was even asking him exactly because I remembered watching your video before :) I think you're 100% correct about the analysis that I am too overpowered. It's my big problem, as soon as there's strong wind and my board goes planning, I'm just a passenger and bear away from the wind without my will -> Catapult incoming. I'm going to work on that :)

  • @Cookiesports

    @Cookiesports

    3 жыл бұрын

    It might help to remember how foot pressure (trim) can affect your steering... if you keep your weight on your back foot you’ll slow down and head up wind. Front foot pressure will flatten the board up, speed you up; and take you off the wind. Find the constantly changing balance between the two to remain on a good course. Remember- good windsurfer won’t go in a straight line, there is always subtle changes and adaptations happening. 👍👍👍

    I thought this video was about how to prevent actuall catapults. Your tips är good for beginners only, once you improve you dont have catapults bacause you are overpowered, you just go faster until you are so overpowered that the sail lose the profile and you need to push with your front hand. Then change to smaller sail.

    Don't get Me wrong, there are some useful tips but it has nothing to do with preventing catapults. Catapults atre caused by wrong technique and also if too little dowhaul tension, or wrong mast/bad sail that dont release in the top. As an ex competition sailer im used to sailing extremely overpowered and often still do. Im doing nothing of the things you are talking about. Just leaning back, sheeting in harder. Good power gibes! I also noticed a few things you could improve, you are not keeping the board steady or actively foot steer the board going straight, i think you are not going very fast so it doesnt look like you are overpowered. Put more pressure on your toes. Going downwind is no problem when overpowered, just bend your back leg and lean back/aft with the sail also tilted back. Keeping your backfoot in the strap will also prevent catapults. But if you do a catapult with both your straps on (very unlikely if not the air, or hitting a wave /whitewater), but good, then you can sheet in with your backhand and you will make a cheese roll. Here a clipp of Me going extremely overpowered downwind at 2:50. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYqIttOJiZzKYLQ.html

    Thanks for clarifying, I understand what you mean now. It sounds like you are a very experienced windsurfer, and amongst the 0.0001% of windsurfers who can turn an accidental catapult until a loop or cheese roll! Good on you! 👍👍👍 To be honest I’m aiming these videos at a very different level of sailor! I see prevention of the catapult through solid blasting techniques (as explained here) a very successful way to coach, gain control, and prevent getting to the point when a catapult is likely...then having the “emergency front arm” and heel pressure technique there just encase. Thanks for watching, and hope you like some of the other videos I’ve uploaded too! 🤙

    @@Cookiesports I knew you would missunderstand. I ment its almost impossible to make a catapult bringing the board with you if you are in the footstraps and lock your feet in with your toes. Not that i can do a loop, i just say its almost impossible. Hi, Good question with a few answers... Firstly, It;'s not necessary to be over the centre line unless I'm aiming for some sort of super sharp turns (like bottom and top turns in waves)- this is more of a free-ride set up. Secondly, singleit'sgenerallyfootstepsprettierstill get the pressure to the rail through the multiple fins. Finally, yes they're a lilt smaller than usual- even with the above notes. Honest answer- the kit I'm using is from the school I'm working at. I remember to check out things whists also getting multiple cameras ready- on this day i may have forgotten the footsteps! Good sharp eye you've got there! Also goes to show that however you've set your gear up you can't use it as an excuse ;-) Jumping video is on the way, waiting for a mega day/on shore day when I've got some bigger raps to play on!

    Great video, thanks man! Bent front arm means pulling the mast towards you to decrease the sail area that can catch wind, correct? Currently fighting with getting into the footstraps and not getting catapulted or tilting the board upwind and losing planing before I can reach both footstraps.

    HI! Yes, bending the front arm opens the sail, therefore catching less wind and preventing you from catapulting. However- be careful... this is not a full time thing: it only happens in an instant for a "quick fix". Many people sail far too much with the front arm bent, therefore always de-powered, and they do not have the "emergency save" available when they need to de-power. Start upwind (with everything). keeping the front arm extended begin to turn slowly off with wind, driving the power through the front foot to speed u the board and keep it flat. Only bend the from arm IF you need a moment of de-power. Try this video for the footstraps in more detail... kzread.info/dash/bejne/mmFrk7dumLq0g84.html

    @@Cookiesports Hi, thanks so much for your prompt reply, I also watched this other great video of yours! In my last session before watching your videos, I had some catapults, some planing loss by tilting the board into the wind while trying to reach the straps, some downwind drifting, and finally a mast foot rupture that made me swim a lot in cold lake Geneva, I also derigged everything on the water and eventually my 5.7 sail sank 😥 So in my next sesh i'll have to use my larger 6.9 firefly for the 1st time together with my 132 magic ride, maybe that will help me make sure i'm not underpowered and better keep planing while trying to reach the straps? I know it depends on the wind, so what would u say is good wind strength and sail size for mastering planing & footstraps? Cheers!

    @@aurelianjohn-herpin1314 6.9 FF and 132magicR is a great combo. The “perfect” set up is (like you say) totally wind and condition dependant. I could say in a dream world the water would be glass flat, non-tidal. You’d have a consistent side shore wind blowing enough the you can be powered up on a 5-6m sail and use a large (ish) board- like the 135 you mention. However in reality we deal with what we are given! Make sure your foot straps are slightly in, and forward. Make sure you start upwind, and power up generally- not just hammer it on a broad reach! Finally- upload a video and send me a link- YT, or Insta! I can give you a point or two if I see you ride! Good luck 👍👌👌

    @@Cookiesports Thanks again for your reply!! So it sounds like my 5.7 sail was a great size, good that I could find it again in the lake and dive for it yesterday! I think your advice of bearing away without going downwind and keeping the front arm straight while reaching for the straps will help me a lot to eventually master planing in footstraps! I will make sure to record myself and send it to you on insta, that would be amazing to get your feedback!!! Btw, do you have a surf school in Greece?

    But what do I do when it is too late? Meaning I am kinda flying around already. How do I not damage my board?

  • @Cookiesports

    So, if you know your going to catapult and there’s nothing you can do here’s a couple things you can do to stop you damaging the board- or hurting yourself.... - do not let go of the boom! Hold on tight with both hands. - go with the flip- stop trying to resist it, sheet in, tuck up and go round the front. Doing this will ensure you go a long way round and into the water. Resisting it is when you’re far more likely to hit the ones of the board. - take a breath and stay calm once under the sail. If you’ve held on with both hands it should be easy enough to follow the boom to the last/clew. If you’ve let go you’re more likely to be twisted and disoriented under the sail. Remember the sail isn’t that big, you’ll find your way out within a few seconds (even if those seconds feel like a lifetime!)

    When urine heavy wind and you get thrown over the boom there is nothing you can do to stop it ! It happens to the best windsurfers .

    Hi! You’re right, accidents can happen to the best of us- in light or strong winds! But with a few key adjustments you can dramatically minimise the risks! 👍

    @@Cookiesports I am a power sailor from Hood River Oregon where I was manufacturing five different brands of sale boards in the 90s. I sailed professionally that means i actually got paid ! It happens to us all with that freak hi gust of wind. Me included! And when it does there's nothing you can do to stop it. Fortunately for me it only happened once but it was big !

    Your ankles are too instable hence the board is wobbling longitudinally. ... footstearing any?

    Not sure i understand your question. Choppy water like this it's important to be "riding the board" not just locked on top of it, so there will be a lot of movement from the knee and ankle joints, plus a lot of small adjustments with where the pressure goes through my feet to keep the board cleanly moving- foot steering as you say yes! Thanks for watching.

    What also helps to stop catapulting is getting on a smaller board, then you won't be swept from the board by strong wund gusts, instead both you and the board will accelerate immediately.

  • @Cookiesports

    @Cookiesports

    Not necessary....modern larger boards can still accelerate quickly now... generally someone having issues with catapulting will have more trouble trying to get a smaller board going, than learning how to control a larger more stable board.
