A round brush, nearly dry, with a light tapping/stabbing motion at a 90 degree angle to the wall, to clean up those last bits of unpainted material is a neat short cut if you're tuckered out at the end of three or four passes. I've done the entire stencil with a small brush making sure the brush does not deform and bristles penetrate under the stencil and started with no paint on the wall at all. I was able to do two passes, and have arms like Popeye to prove it!

That’s a lot of work. It looks lovely. But using a very large stencil brush that has been off loaded (removing the paint by brushing paper towels before stenciling) is much quicker and easier. Also, using a brush allows you to apply more or less paint.

thank you. sure wish I didn't have these textured walls! for the size wall I was looking to do this looks completely out of the question for us. thanks for helping me decide NOT to try stencil on my wall :)

Thank you for sharing this! Did you consider using a paint brush?
