I think it’s worth mentioning the Peachy (Painting Phase) video about lightly customising Cadians to be other regiments. It’s pretty clever and is an option if people want up to date GW models and - say - Tallarn without major modelling.

Could you post a link? I love IG but I have no interest in Cadians, Kreig or Scions. I like normal people fighting the horrors of the universe. Dudes who have trained to fight since birth are just shitty space marines.
The Start Collecting: Astra Militarum was how I got started, turned the Leman Russ into a Tank commander with Gatekeeper then added a Demolisher. And if you have two tanks, you need some screening units, so got a Sentinel, then Bullgryn, more infantry and then another Sentinel.... Next thing you know, you're yelling "FOR THE EMPEROR" and fixing your bayonets for a charge against a Necron Overlord in melee.
Tip:If you don't like how Cadia looks and your just a hobbyist/crusadeonly/Causal player you'll be able to find cheaper models of every time on esty or 3rd party. If you really want to be cheap you can find some sellers selling 10x models for 20-30 a pack. That, or get little green solider and base them up.

This. The truest best way to start an Astra Militarum army is to get on Anvil Industries or Etsy and shop around until you are hitting maybe 1-2 bucks per figure. Even going full Mechanized, paying retail price for a GW guard army will be way over budget in any way that people would consider sane.

I believe it starts with deciding which of your organs you don't need.
Having a 3D printer and playing Imperial Guard is great So many people have made models for the tanks that you can just have as many Russes or Basilisks or Chimeras as you want (I've printed 2 Russes and a third and fourth are on the way) Baneblades might be harder to find, though

Starting a guard army was quite easy a few years ago. Battleforce with three Russes, a Chimera, heavy weapons teams and a command squad. Add the start collecting and you had a great start. For your infantry, there was a kit for 8 bucks with 5 standard Cadians. I now have four Russes, two Wyverns/Hydras, a Chimera, a Valkyrie and a Baneblade... a kitbashed Primaris Psyker, a few Commissars. But I really don´t like Cadians and Catachans, so I only have the two Cadian squads that were somewhere in these boxes. Since GW refuses to sell other regiments, I don´t have a playable Guard army and my tanks usually just gather some dust or are being used as terrain. Really a shame, I´d buy lots of squads if they would do some Steel Legion or Valhallans.
@evangelosvasiliades1204
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it's not the most plausible to do secondary squads for all the minor regiments as just a fun thing for one faction, the Krieg killteam was a good one time for the most popular secondary regiment, and even that format is ofcourse not ideal if you want to do a whole armies worth of infantry of special regiments. It's sad, but I suppose I'll take it over most factions which just have little sub faction aesthetic variety. Let it be said head swaps and the right colourscheme make a big difference though.
@DasVadderr
Жыл бұрын
@@evangelosvasiliades1204 It would not be much effort for GW though. They could for example replace a currently available regiment. Of course they´ll keep their Cadians but Catachans look old af and instead of updating them some time in the future, they could release another regiment. They don´t even have to do more than a Command Squad and regular Infantry, everything else would be kitbashed. Or just release a full regular squad of DK. Then the people can choose between torso with armor and torso with coat. That would be a significant improvement. GW is into this whole upgrade kit thing anyway and it works perfectly with the Marines. Upgrade kits with heads, greebly and transfers combined with two different torsos wuld suffice for most players and do GW´s arch-nemesis, the dreadded third-party-vendors, probably more harm than banning their heads from WH world.
Buy as many copies of the old start collecting box as you can before they go off shelves. Three Russes are a good start for a decent IG army.

I feel like the combat patrol should swap the sentinel and field ordinance for a russ and a HWT, and itd be an absolutely goated box, especially since combat patrol is supposed to be 500 points and curently this box only comes out to about 370, while custodians is almost 700
Everybody gangsta until you take out 8 shades of BANEBLADES.
If you find the cheap 5 pack snap together Guardsman grab box, stock up. When I was starting(before the new starter boxes), they were half the cost of the typical full squad when you did the math. A great way to boost numbers and meet minimums

Speaking of alternate sculpts, I'm a fan of pinups, so I really want to buy/print the full line of Across the Realms's Pinup Corps and ideally field them one day. I've for a single unit of 10 infantry with sergeant on the way, but I'd like to know how to adapt them to the game - what unit to run each sculpt as, what subfaction to choose, etc.
How to start an Imperial Guard Army: 1) *Make peace with your newely aquired debt*
Perfect timing! I'm just starting a (Traitor) guard army for Narrative games.
Got all my IG through 3 start collecting boxes, 2 Cadia defense force boxes, 2 Battleforce boxes. Have some other odds and ends. Probably get 6 more boxes of troops 2 Kasrkin, 2 Veteran guard boxes, and a new combat patrol box. I need to get some HQ unit’s probably Solar and Ursula Creed. I’m gonna work on having a 2000 point list built and painted later this year maybe. Necrons and Death Guard are my mine focus currently.
The first thing a new Guard player needs to understand is how the army works. In other armies (like Space Marines) you look at a unit, see what it does, and then bring one. With Guard you need to forget this. You decide what your army wants to do, and then select the appropriate units from the Codex. And this is where most new players make their second mistake. Guard is not like others. Other armies have something they are good at. Guard does not. Take for example a Hellhound tank. It has 11 wounds at T7 and a BS of 4+. But the moment it goes to 5 Wounds remaining the BS is down to 5+. And on the last 2 Wounds the BS is down to 6+. So at the beginning of the game it has an 50% chance to hit. After the first round of enemy shooting it will be down to about 33%, and before blowing up it will be down to 16%. So usually your wehicles will shoot like Orks do. But Orks get to roll a lot of dices to have any meaningful shooting at all. Guard does not. For this reason, you need at least 2 of every unit that you take. And if your list depends on it to win, then at least 3. And this is only in terms of vehicles. In terms of squads the ideal Guard list used to have at least 6 Infantry squads for an 1000 point list. Preferably more. With Arks you are not limited to 9 Infantry, and 3 Kasrkin. That is a grand total of 12 Infantry squads for the 6 Objectives and 5 turns of game. This is where it gets expensive fast, as the cost to buy the 9 Infantry squads from GW is 360 EUR. For a grand total of 585 points. Add in 3 squads of Kasrkin for 135 EUR and an additional 300 ponts, and you have yet to reach 900 points, but you have just spent 495 EUR at GW retail prices. At current GW prices if you do not plan on visiting Official GW tournaments I would highly suggest looking into alternative sculpts or a resin printer, as the printer will have payed for itself twofold by the time you build your 2000 point army. Alternative sculpts can also be a good option, as for example Wargames Atlantic usually has boxes of 20 miniatures go for around 140-150 EUR in an 5 box multipack deal. That is about half price compared to GW Infantry troops.
Been starting my guard army since the Cadia Stands box set came out. Quickly learned that 3d printing will be my best friend not to go bankrupt .-.
Hello, new noob here sorry; is the current Astra Militarum codex available the exact same as the one that came in the Cadia Stands box? Or are there some differences? Like extra pages of lore/artwork

Hello there, would anyone have a suggestion or recommendation on how someone could adapt the list at the end of the video for a 1000-pt game? Thank you 😊
It maybe not the best but I have fun with my 1k list. HQ: Tank Commander -Battle Cannon Troops: 3x10 Infantry Squads Fast Attack: 2 Armored Sentinels and 3 Scout Sentinels Heavy Support: 2 Leman Russ
I started my army buying 140 Scions, 6 Taurox Primes, and 3 Valkyries. My Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST) are being recruited and trained (built and painted) and I can't wait to deploy them to the battlefields of the 41st millennium!
I wonder which army requires a bigger lunatic: GSC, IG, or AdMech?
The biggest thing I think sells Guard is how versatile you can make them, and how well they can do it. Like artillery, all tanks, all infantry, mech infantry, air cavalry, elite scions in transports, all of it is at least a decent threat on the tabletop.
Thank you for this video. Literally JUST TODAY i made the insane decision to throw away 100% of my grey-horde from AOS and start Warhammer 100% new by having ZERO miniatures and dipping my toes in 40k. Imperial Guard are everything I want out of a fantasy setting; regular men and boys facing the horrors of the Warp; together. Something just feels "right" about hording hundreds of minis for "meat waves" to secure victory
Makes me sad seeing the Basilisk picture through this video, it has been “Temporarily out of stock Online” on the GW site for months lol :(
Is the combat patrol the same as the army box?
How to get into Astra Militarum: 1st) Do rule of cool, save up and spend hundreds of dollars on Krieg boy Grenadiers (Ebay), Death Riders and the Gorgon Armoured Assault Transport 2nd) Assemble and start painting everything! 3rd) Start your first 40k match towards the end of 8e with your new 1k points of Krieg! 4th) Hear about the new compendium, only to find out 75% of your army is now in legends, such as the now nerfed Gorgon that is still being sold for $300 5th) Flip GW the bird, and 3D print your remaining 1k points 6th) Profit! (Even as angry as I was about the timing and how everything went down, I don't regret starting AM or Kriegers at all. I love the sculpts, and I had a blast doing them! I'm currently finishing up assembling and hope to start painting soon the remainder of the army, as the time between the 4th and 5th step is 2 years due to demotivation, and because I decided to dupe the Gorgon and just go full infantry, i.e. 146 models. AM is just fun to use and Warhammer is one of the few games I've ever played where... being human you have to be a badass or die! The whole "balls to the wall" sentiment just resounds within me and is so much fun!)
I’m a new player who loves the concept of the Astra Militarum and wants them to be my first army, but it seems like they’re really pricy and difficult Should I choose a different army/plan?
I have a Guard start collecting box, and I plan to combine them with the new Guard combat patrol as the Therion Cohort to accompany my Raven Guard

I held off on starting an Astra Militarum army a month ago - I only bought a Rogal Dorn and 3 Leman Russ tanks for a Brood Brother detachment for my Genestealer Cults army. But now that AM’s second wave is being released, I’m being tempted all over again. @Moonwake534

You can but you will lock a lot faction specific rules out plus it’ll be very expensive in CP for the detachments you’ll have to buy. If you are playing with your own play group then knock yourself out with using all the rules so long as everyone agrees, but if you play against anyone else that may be a different story
So according to some forces, there are about 30 TRILLION active guardsmen, which means about 1.5 trillion dollars in models. So, sounds fun
I just got the Cadia Stands box about a month and a half ago. I also bought a squad of Kasrkin off ebay along with a Rogal Dorn and Lord Solar. Iam a relatively new player I only started to collect right before Guard had an actual announcement about their new edition so I got lucky and didnt sink too much money in before the new models dropped. Guard is definitely an expensive army, its not horrific for points if you go the route of buying more Kasrkin than regular infantry to both fill points and be good models its just Kasrkin dont exist right now I got once box from the shadowvaults launch like 3 months ago and the recent launch of their standalone box has been a pain to find anything for MSRP people just scalping them for $30 more than what they were sold for or more but I'm hoping to have 3-4 squads of Kasrkin by the time everything is said and done and I do think that for a new player and for an effective army it is the way to go is to get them over the usual Cadian infantry supposing you arent going to go super armor heavy, along with that if youre looking to do either Krieg or Catachan or really anything else go find an STL somewhere and 3d print or have a friend print them because they are not worth the money they want to charge you. A squad of Krieg supposing you buy a box of veteran guard is $60 for 10 models which is horrific along with that their forge world minis are ludicrously expensive like $400 for an earthshaker platform. I wouldnt even look at Catachan aside from rule of cool and even then finding a comparable print would be better than paying an arm and a leg for models older than me. Imperial Guard is not a cheap army being pseudo horde depending on how you spec yourself out, as said I'm going more the heavy infantry route having some chaff and objective holders in the form of regular Cadian infantry but my backbone is going to be made up of Kasrkin, the Rogal, and a Baneblade with the deathstrike playing area denial on objectives. Guard are a very versatile army at the moment and it will be interesting to see how they hold up in 10th edition when that eventually comes but at the moment you can really play them however you want to as long as you arent too wishy washy on what you want, dont be half in with infantry and half in armor go one way or another or youll have either an issue of too many infantry are getting chewed up or youre not getting enough firepower out of your tanks.

But you can squad for example 3 Leman Russes into one data sheet so you can bring 9 tanks and then 3 tank commanders for a total of 12 Leman Russes. Troops choices do not apply to the rule of 3 though so you can have like 12 Shock Troops.
Just buy 4 baneblades… that’s about 2k points and an awful lot of fun (not the most competitive but loads and loads of fun)
GW has made some strange decisions lately, if they want people to buy a lot of Astra Militarum models. I have put my catachan force on pause for now. Have plenty of troops since a lot of them were built to be elite units that no longer exist. There's no reason to buy anything right now, besides tanks. But I gotta finish painting all the things I've bought, but are not really playable, now. Once I finish painting all the stuff I can't use, maybe it'll be playable again. Who knows? For now though, I'm back to working on my orks. Most of that stuff is still reasonably playable. I don't feel emotionally attached to GW products, so I'm always tempted to get various third party kits because they look cooler. And if many units aren't very useable, why would I pick a GW model over any other? I can't imagine any scenario where anything from forgeworld would be appealing to me, a catachan player. I am thankful they don't seem to desire my money. Weird business model

What? Guard should consistently bring 100 inf + for screening even when they aren't the list's focus. A ton of Scions and Kasrkin are absolutely valid, and one of the most powerful tools the Guard has is a Scion deathball. By the 'no longer exist' comment I assume you mean vets, but the double special weapons of Cadian shock troop squads deals with that problem and have a great little bonus to boot. There are plenty of things I complain about with GW in general and guard related things of the past, but I have no idea how you wound up where you are at.

@evangelosvasiliades1204 Vets and conscripts hurt a lot of guard players hearts and wallets since they have been a codex for what +5 years now? I may enjoy the new DKIS as great infanty choice for my Vallahans but I won't lie and say I wouldn't rather just have the option to run +20 bodies for 100 or less pts. With artillery basically being pointless with +5s to hit, and flyers being given absolutely nothing to do it's not hard to see many people who enjoyed those playstyles with a long running codex being rather disappointed. Someone said this when the leaks first happened. "It's not about what was gained in this codex but rather what was lost.

@@BrotherVoidBomber Conscripts weren't something I saw taken that often in the past, but it does suck to lose them 100%, they were the epitome of just having meat for the grinder which is fun. Vets I just don't get though, Cadian Shock Troops are functionally their rule adaptation, less consistency in favour of exploding dice, I don't see anything I would use vets for in the past no longer being doable, and the Mechanized regiment trait makes that style feel better than it has ever since 7th atleast. Artillery and Aircraft situation sucks, but thats a general rules problem, not guard. Heres hoping 10th edition doesn't just leave both in the gutter. I'm getting the feel that will be the case for artillery sadly (admittedly after years of balance problems with them) but that aircraft will get a positive rework.

Like i have like 15 baneblade 18(ish) lemun russ battle tanks 12 lemun russ demolisher 20+ Imperial Gaurdsmen 5 ogryn 10 valkyries 2 basilisks 9 hellhounds 20+ Chimera 10+ commissar And etc various other boxes. Sad part is now if i need something i have to drive 200km to the nearest hobby shop.
Maybe Starting with 2 Combat patrolls are the way to go if making Astra Militarum... Then.. purchasing 1 by one or 2nd hand Leman russ
Add a comment...169 First purchase the codex, $110nzd and going up 6%
1) Buy a 3D printer... 😜

buy a 3d printer it will be cheaper and you will have a printer for free.
Don't buy the codex, it'll be obsolete by the time you finish painting your models.

My advice to any who enters to play guard is proxy a lot of your infantry. There are cheaper boxes out there and all have all the stuff you need. Also consider 3d printing your stuff, and if you can do your best to Ebay through it. Buying from GW is not worth it.
Please, for the love og God don't it's so much money its insane.
