Worked like a charm. A used a clean rag to work it into the wood and seen better results, verses a paint brush

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I have watched videos for hours and I finally found yours. I have a maple dresser I need to redo for our master bedroom and I desperately wanted to stain it a little darker like the walnut you have here. I didn’t know what to use or what to do because maple is so 😬😬 to work with but a beautiful wood.

thanks man this is helpful, i'm not getting good results with the minwax preconditioner either, so i will try this. I own a cabinet shop and maple has always been finicky. One of the best woods I've ever stained is Alder, it's just very soft. Thanks!

This video saved my bacon on some very characteristic maple slabs. Client picked them out and like them because of the spalting but hated how some of the samples looked when stained. She wanted these maple slabs to have the yellowness of like a yellow pine. tried this technique with a semi transparent natural Minwax and they turned out great thank you!

@@valeriya105 no I did the denatured alcohol/ shellac mix first. Let it dry. Then sanded that. Once i sanded the alcohol/shellac mix coat then I put the dark Danish oil on. I would recommend trying it on several sample pieces to get it worked out before you do it on your piece. As you saw in the video I played around with it until I was confident in the process

I’m refinishing an old maple farm table that an older lady gave me that’s been in her family since the 40s and I am so scared to mess it up! I want to make it a nice as possible so I can pass it down through my family like she did; we want a darker walnut color but I’m so scared to even try to stain. This is super easy to follow and makes me feel less anxious about it- but is there a way to get it darker? I don’t think the lighter cinnamon/honey tones will work in our space and I’d like it darker to match the other furniture. Thank you for your video!

My advice would be to get some maple boards that are not apart of the table and experiment. As you saw in the video I did several test pieces. Be a student and experiment. You would rather mess up on test pieces. You may also look into ordering some wood dyes. Dyes are different than stains and may allow you to get it darker.

I have not tried on cabinets. it was a scary process. but i did several tests before I moved forward. My suggestion is you test out several pieces of scrap maple and get confident with it before you try. if you do make sure to get the shellac that is wax free. Most hardware stores sell the shellac that has wax in it. I bought the kind i used online.

@@richardeberlefurniture It depends if you want ready-made colors or want to custom mix your colors, or do a combo of both. Mohawk & General Finishes both make excellent ready made dye stains. For concentrated dye stains: WD Lockwood makes a powder version and Homestead Finishes makes Trans-Tint liquid dye concentrate. Both are fantastic. I highly recommend watching Charles Neil Woodworking KZread Channel-- He has an in-depth video series on Dyes vs Stains; how to apply, how to mix your own, and a plethora of excellent advice. Sadly, Charles passed away a few years ago, so you can't ask questions, but the legacy of knowledge he left behind in his videos is incredible! I have never encountered anyone with the depth and breadth of technical knowledge about wood finishing products as Charles. I hope this will be valuable for you. Christy

I don’t have a video, but it is simple. Maple is a very hard dense wood with grain that is intertwined in multiple directions. Wetting the surface fills the grain with water, expanding it. Once it is dry, the stain has a place to be in the wood grain. The stain will penetrate much better, giving it a much more even and stained appearance. For an even darker finish, like piano black, you would use an analine dye to radically increase the acceptance of the color. Using a steamer to raise the grain is a fast and easy way, because the steam dries really quickly. After doing this, your stain will work on the maple quite nicely.
