This comment is way too under-rated! I've learned the hard way but this is an absolutely priceless piece of advice. That and starting and ending the spray stroke before and then off the part you're painting, never starting directly on the piece you're painting. Ie start spraying a couple inches to the left of the bumper and finish your spray am inch or so off to keep the spray nice and uniform.

@@royjones9852 Get a grey scotch Brite pad and scuff it up then use an 800 then 1500 sandpaper and wet sand that primer down to smooth it all out. Then use adhesion promoter followed by paint and clear coat and make sure to wait the recommended times between coats. I'd wait 24 hours before clear coating also but that's just me.

It's somewhat recommended to paint indoors, only to mitigate dirt and debris from blowing and falling onto the paint. For other comments, from experience, base coats usually stop being tacky after 20-30 minutes, and clear coats usually harden after 45 minutes to an our unless with a breeze or wind, which will probably bring it down to 30 minutes.. I think a rule of 3s is good to start with. 3 coats of paint, 3 coats of clear coat. You need to wait for your paint to dry before sanding as it may still be mushy, and any grit will imbed easier into soft paint. I think having your piece elevated to around chest-height, or having the top of it at just under your chin makes it easier to paint, find a way to hang the piece with metal coat hangers from spots that won't be seen.

@@jdmchickkustomz9417 you'll have to sand it down over a large area after it hardens and respray. Very frustrating. You might have luck with lacquer thinner in a spray gun. You'll need to be quick because it will make the paint coat mushy. The only direct route is sanding that spot down and using Bondo and respraying with primer, paint coat, clear coat and fine-grit rubbing compound to smooth out the layering.

2 layers of adhesion promoter is fine. Wait an hour before using your base coat and then 10 minutes between 3-5 coats of base. I'd wait 24 hours before clear coating if possible and start with a lighter coat with 10 minute intervals going a little heavier each time. Then wait a hood 24 hours after that before wet sanding with say 1500,2000,2500 grit then buffing and finally polishing if you really wanna do it right.

Just curious. Why not a primer after the adhesion coat and how many cans of color did this take? Awesome vid. Thanks!

Because the bumper was already “primered” from the manufacturer. I believe the adhesion just lets the paint stick better.

Looks great! You didn't mention any safety gear. $20 for respirator (Highly Recommended to wear one) Goggles and Tyvek Suit $20 for both (For a small job like this these are optional, but it is better to be safe!) Also no mention about a wax and grease remover (Prep Solvent) wipe down before anything. If you're not using a sealer then forget about using it because some have very long flash times. I've made some videos to clarify these subjects.

Looks like this guy was using a shirt as mask. I'm like dude, your lungs are worth a $20 respirator and your eyes are worth $5 goggle.

I saw your comment that it takes 2-3 cans depending on the color. Really for clarity, does that mean 2-3 cans for the base paint? How many cans do you need of clear coat? Etc Thank you

playray91 yes, 2-3 cans if you’re using the dupli color touch up paint since they are 8oz. If you are using another brand they will most likely be 12oz so you’ll only need 2. For the clearcoat 1 can will be enough

For the base coat, you can use whatever. I would recommend using rust-oleum. It’s a good brand

The trick is to get used sand for the sanding cloth then the shit is cheaper. sometimes I make ky own sand. Start with Silica and go from there............ / / /
