For the compressor you want to try and match the min CFM. Remember at 10 psi the CFM goes up on your compressor more than you think. Don't waste your money see my link. My wife and I spent well over an hour hand painting one side of an 1800mm X 1200mm garden trellis yesterday. We have four panels to do, and with two coats that works out to at least 16 hours of back ache (from leaning over to reach the centre) and the finish is not flash because it is so hard to avoid drips. This morning it suddenly clicked that I have a 3hp 50 litre compressor in my shop and easily enough airline to reach outside, so no need to pay a lot of money for an electric spray gun. It was a big bonus finding this video on my favourite woodworking channel. Plus I'll be able to spray paint finish on my projects. Today keeps getting better. While I was typing this comment a courier turned up with the Kreg router table insert and supports I'd ordered from Amazon. We heard last week that the USPS was stopping post to New Zealand and some other countries because of the lack of transportation, so I was worried that my router cabinet rebuild was going to be put on hold. I originally built the table top with laminated kitchen worktop that revealed itself as nasty chipboard when I cut out the hole for the insert. It was full of voids and socked up finish like a bottomless pit. Since then I have discovered Acacia hardwood benchtop which is solid and I can double thickness it for a 52mm solid hardwood top. I made the original insert out of 10mm actetal plastic which whilee being the stiffest of the machinable plastics, still distorted when tightened, so this time I am using the Kreg insert which I have a lot of experience with. So I am a happy camper right now. If only it would stop raining. :-(

I think it would be worthy of note to mention that as you widen the fan, the material coverage will be less. So as you widen (or narrow) you fan size, double check your material coverage.

New to your channel today, some really good stuff. My wife and I started a business in our home recently, as I was forced to take an extended leave from my profession, manufacturing process engineering, and production, management, and I am not the type of person to just sit on the couch doing nothing. So, we combined my prior experiences, with my education, and a particular passion of mine, music and musical instruments, with my wife's passion for art and color, as well as her work experience dealing with customers and the public, and we are building handmade, custom, electric guitars and basses. We are at the point now where we are looking at options for improving our finishing methods, and are looking for information regarding the differences, the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, in comparing HVLP with LVLP systems. We only have a small compressor and we are only finishing, at most, 3 instruments at a time, often just one instrument. We build all of our instruments using only high quality exotic and domestic hard woods, tone woods, many of them being highly figured pieces of these woods. So we will almost never be using paint, and opaque coloring, covering up these extremely beautiful, and extremely valuable, pieces. Applications of stains, dies, or other pigments for coloring, will usually be done by hand, or with a small airbrush kit that we have. The HVLP or LVLP system would be almost exclusively used for finishing of the instruments, like an application of a poly, a lacquer, etc. Any advice, Insight, or information, would be greatly appreciated! Thank You

I have the mini 4 and I love it. Can't imagine using anything else now that I've got my hands on it. I use the 3M pot too and it's a mandatory accessory in my opinion, being able to spray at any angle and never worry about the consistency of the paint feed is just so nice. Cleanup is a dream. It's one of those buy one cry once purchases. Yeah I spent $1500 on my setup. Yeah, I also have perfect finishes on everything I make for the rest of my life. I doubt these things wear out to the point they can't be rebuilt. I've sprayed everything from boat epoxy to super-thin poly and even painted a living room because I could. You've got to deliberately search to find things you can't do with a Fuji setup.

Jonathan, I've watched this video now several times, very informative and great content! One question, currently I'm building a dresser with seven drawers and was curious to know if you prefer spraying the lacquer on the long pieces of the drawers (edges half-rounded) prior to cutting, gluing and assembly or after the drawers are assembled? It seemed to me spraying first has less chance of marking up the raw wood and the joints will still have unfinished wood for the glue to hold. Thanks!

I've only used a sprayer a couple of times, but a couple of things I noticed. First don't spray it in the garage. Everything gets coated in a fine dust. Second, don't use it for finishes such as stain that need to penetrate the wood.

So how well would this work for a production setting? Our company uses water based polyurethane. We push out 75-100 end table stumps(3 coats of poly) and 20-30 tables (4 coats of poly. coffee tables, sofa tables, benches, and dining tables) a week. Just wondering if this would be practical or would we have to refill the hopper an obscene amount of times

You should mix your material in a mixing cup then strain it into the paint gun. Since material that sets for a while can pile up in the bottom of the can and then stick to the bottom of the mixing stick you just used to stir it you don't wanna stick the stick back into the paint gun.

Great video, these days most are using more water based paints for woodwork and furniture builds, have you switched or still using oil based paints and thinners. Very informative video and currently building a spray booth like yours! Appreciate if you got the time to get back to me.

Just FYI on the compressor vs sprayer air usage: most compressors rate themselves on SCFM (Standard cubic feet per minute, ie, 1cfm at 14.7 psi absolute), and most air tools use CFM at 60 or 90psi (~75 or 105psi absolute) to make their product look good. So if a compressor says it produces 5 SCFM at 60psi, it's perfectly matched for a tool that consumes 1 CFM at 60psi. A standard Porter-Cable 6-gal pancake compressor produces 2.6 SCFM at 90 psi (0.36 CFM of 90psi air). Your air sprayer specs out at about 5 CFM at 45psi (20 SCFM). So that compressor is going to need something like 8 seconds to recover for every second of using that sprayer; not unworkable but not ideal. It's dumb and confusing, and has lead to many an undersized compressor.

Not shaking the can of product really only applies if you are brushing it on. The strainer (filter) eliminates any bubbles. Even if they made it to the gun, they would be atomized. If they made it through the gun and the filter, they would pop in the air. If they didn't pop, that's a superbubble!

Air supply is a major role in deciding what spraying system to use. I myself have settled on an LVLP system (www.homedepot.com/p/SPRAYIT-LVLP-Gravity-Feed-Spray-Gun-Kit-SPRAYIT-SP-33500K/204343921), as all I'm coating are small pieces and are in small runs/batches. Something I could run with the pancake compressor I already had, as making the leap up would mean spending a few hundred more to meet the 7SCFM most HVLP guns call for. I will make the jump after I outgrow the capacity of my current set-up, at that stage, I'm jumping over the HVLP spraying requirements and going straight to sandblasting range as that is another crucial aspect of spraying, looking at minimum 10-15 SCFM. That way all bases are covered. Another option for those with small compressors is Powder coating. You can do that with a pancake compressor. Also, Cerakote, which works with the sprayer I linked above. Now, you may be limited as sandblasting is needed for a lot of powder coating, but there's a mini blasting gun that works for small things like fixtures, jewelry, etc.

In a different video you recommend a mixture of 15-25% thinner. On this video, you used 50% thinner. What factors were considered to make the change?

There were many typos in my previous comment. Do you have any tips for making Alkyd Day Glo oil based paint stick to wood ? I tried primer. That didn’t work. I’ll mix the paint three parts paint, and one part paint thinner. I am thinking that maybe the paint dries in mid air before it even hits the word because it has been atomize to be such a small particle once it leaves the gun . Just a theory. These are for indoor blacklight golf courses in rental houses. They will be getting a lot of traffic. The paint literally brushes away like powder even after drying overnight.

Am I the only woodworker using a pressure tank to spray finish? All the same features, air, fluid, fan adjustment. The cost is a little more but it holds more material for bigger projects.

great video(s), thanks. 2 questions. If applying a second coat say in an hour, do I have to clean out the gun or can I leave finish in gun, waiting for next coat? 2. can you save unused finish a use next time?

Hm, the item you've chosen (a bookcase or whatever it is with a bunch of cubbies), presents what seems to be a pretty significant spraying challenge. How do you spray the inside of all of those sections evenly? This is a glaring omission from the video.

I have a lot of hvlp experience, none of which is on wood. So THANK YOU so much for this vid. The only question i have is if you dont use a mixing cup to measure the thinner and varnish ratio, would you be worried of an inconsistent finish or is varnish a bit more forgiving than paint?

  • @katzmosestools

    @katzmosestools

Not worried at all. The thinner evaporates 100% when it cures so you're left with just clear coat. Being off 20% in either direction wont matter
