HOW TO SPOT FAKE AC DELCO IRIDIUM KNOCKOFF SPARKPLUGS

Bought some counterfeit AC Delco 41-110 iridium sparkplugs on ebay and thought this would be a good opportunity to teach others how to spot the fakes.

I came across your video while researching spark plug blistering on my 3.6. I changed the plugs, AC Delco 41-988, at approximately 98,000 miles. Colors were good and plugs looked ok. I purchased a set of AC Delco plugs for her off of eBay and I distinctly recall the differences you point out in this video. At any rate, at approximately 114,000 miles, the engine developed an intermittent miss at idle. No codes were set. The miss started to get worse and the engine would vibrate at times during idle and in gear. Pulled the plugs and noted white blistering (plugs way to hot). I started to research why the plugs would be blistering. I couldn’t wait for the downtime to order plugs off of eBay so I went down to O’Reilly’s and picked up a set ($$$). When I checked the new plugs, I noted the differences as you described here. At any rate; great post! Now I know why the plugs I bought off of eBay were blistering. This information could have saved my engine and it did save a lot of research. Great information! Thanks.

Thanks for the very informative video. I made the mistake and ordered thru ebay that same part number for my 2012 Tahoe after noticing it running sluggish. Replaced the spark plugs and noticed it loosing power again after a couple months so i pulled a plug out to inspect and noticed the center electrode tip erroded. I continued to pull the rest of the plugs and all where the same! I replaced the fake set with genuine acdelco plugs i purchased from the local auto parts store and no issues. I don't understand how ebay allows the sale of counterfeit parts on their website. The time and effort is not worth the couple dollars in savings. Lessons learned!

I had this exact same thing happen. I put a set of AC Delco plugs in my car I bought off an auction site. One failed within 50 miles, the center electrode was gone. I thought ok I got a bad one, it happens I guess. I replaced that plug with one from a local parts store. My car started to get an intermittent miss after 25k miles. Sure as crap I started pulling plugs 5 out of 6 the center electrode was burned to nothing. the surviving plug was the replacement I put in and it was in perfect shape. Lesson learned.

I also recently had no idea the fake plugs were an issue , but got caught twice on an EBay order. A set of Ac Delco’s for my GMC Sierra and a set of 4 Denso’s for my wife’s Toyota. Did some research on the fakes and, Presto. All the EBay sourced ones were counterfeit . I am lucky I didn’t instal any though, instead went to the local auto parts store for all originals. This is a very well done and informative video, which I hope saves a lot of people from making the same error. I won’t be making the same mistake on this Chinese junk again ,I can tell you that much.

What’s even more funny is the fake NGK plugs I’ve seen come with plastic caps and the genuine NKGs I buy usually just have cardboard caps. Honestly the caps are kinda a new thing because I don’t remember ANY spark plugs coming with caps until maybe 10 years or less ago. They used to all come either naked in boxes or sometimes in bubble plastic containers back in the day.

Bought some on Amazon from a random seller at the "to good to be true" price. The box looks similar to your fake one dimensionally, but some differences. It does have the 2018 copyright text like your genuine one though, and all other text seems to match your genuine one. Mine are a different part number, 41-962. Pretty much everything you pointed out physically with your knock off plug matches what I bought though...

Does this counterfeiting happen on all brands? I am guessing that the reason is because a counterfeit plug is produced cheaper and sold for more money... AC delco is not a manufacturing facility. They dont have an assembly line of parts being made. AC delco is a brand, they make deals with several manufacturers that make parts and if they have parts that they make that meets ac delco's requirements then they will allow that manufacturer to print their ac delco numbers and boxes.

They make knockoffs of everything now from spark plugs to wheel bearing ups to hydraulic lifters. It’s getting harder and harder to decent the real from the knockoffs anymore. But what’s even worse is the quality control on the genuine parts has declined so far over the last few years that the failure rates of the genuine parts are almost as high as the knockoffs now. It’s a crazy world we’re living in.
