@@Lebrick101 I wonder what dealership you went to? Luckily when I've taken my SC400 to Lexus to find out what the check engine light was (though I know there's a way to check what it is without a fancy scanner but had to make sure) they said I didn't even need to pay $200 for inspection since they weren't 100% sure since the code can be one of the 2 problems. But yeah thankfully I have yet to run into sketchy shops since I've always look at the reviews first before going.

I had a dealer change my air filter that I had put in just a couple months earlier. He didn't even ask me if I wanted one. It just showed up on the bill when I went to check out. That, along with $25 for "Misc. shop supplies". I told him I wasn't going to pay for the air filter so he put my old one back in. When I asked him about the "Misc. shop supplies" he said that was for shop rags they used to wipe their hands on when they got dirty. So they couldn't use a $3 roll of paper towels. They had to gouge me.

I remember when JiffyLube did this to me. I replaced the air filter the day before but the following day I was feeling lazy and decided to get my oil changed instead of doing it myself. When they showed me a dirty air filter I laughed to the point I howled.

After like 3 years of free oil changes the mechanics started to go hard on these "inspections" and problems. They once brought out my air filter with leaves on it and they were like OMG you need to change this!!! I asked the price of a new filter and they were like oh $55. Told them to dust the filter off and put it back in... They were so silly. It's too bad that car got totaled.

I have always tried to be an honest mechanic for the place I work. But we got a new manager and he is upset at me for not recommending enough stuff. His big complaint is I needed to start recommending things based on milage. He gave me a chart of how often to replace certain things. Among those are shocks and struts at 75,000 miles, even if they are perfectly fine. I have been recommending a lot of services I would have otherwise not recommended because I can't lose my job. I do somewhat sabotage his attempts to sell things by specifying that I am making a recommendation based on milage, so that when the customer reads it they question him more on it.

I bought a couple new parts and took my car in to have them change the parts (preventive maintenence, nothing broken). I've had my car for awhile now and baby the absolute crap out of it. I had changed the oil a week before taking it in. The shop calls me the next day and says my car has almost zero oil in it and they took pictures of the low oil light on the dash and a picture of the dip stick. YOU COULD LITERALLY SEE THE OIL LEVEL (albeit faintly) AT THE FULL MARK ON THE DIP STICK IN THE PICTURE. The POS drained my oil, tried to get me to agree to have them search for the leak and still charged me $30 for new oil when I refused and called them out over the phone and in person in the shop. Always record the actual odometer reading, NOT the trip odometer. I took a Ford to a Ford dealership for a stalling problem. After multiple visits they told me the mechanic drove the car for 20 miles with no problems. Evidently he 'accidentally' reset the trip odometer. How? Because I had recorded the actual odometer reading I was able to show the car had not been driven at all. 0.1 miles between my recorded mileage and the mileage they gave the car back to me, and tried to charge me.

It can be normal for there to a small amount of oil residues since there's oil in the shock

If there's oil on the outside of the shock, that means it's leaking. It's NOT normal for a shock to be leaking. And if you want to argue that you are right, then why are the original shocks on my 23 year old Suzuki bone dry?

A chain tire store told me my 2012 4Runner needed all new shocks/springs...cause `it was time`...with 66K mikes?! vehicle rides & handles perfect...they wanted around $1200 for the job...all I wanted was the free rotation of the tires I purchased there...laughable how businesses try to scam customers. Will not buy tires there again...they will loose thousands in business...not my problem, their fault. Screw them.

Smh you can just test your struts by pushing down on the car if it's stiff your good but if it's easy to push down on and it jumps up and down get them replaced and sometimes they break on there own but you don't want that ....

I've had a few inicidents that will always make me look at mechanics like politicians or used car salesmen. I realize that 99 out of 100 mechanics could be good...but the 100th mechanic could actually kill you. I actually almost died once on the highway because of a mechanic. I can work on about 70% of things on a vehicle now, but when I do have to go to a mechanic, I will have tools on me and check stuff right in there face from now on.
