@@Lebrick101 I wonder what dealership you went to? Luckily when I've taken my SC400 to Lexus to find out what the check engine light was (though I know there's a way to check what it is without a fancy scanner but had to make sure) they said I didn't even need to pay $200 for inspection since they weren't 100% sure since the code can be one of the 2 problems. But yeah thankfully I have yet to run into sketchy shops since I've always look at the reviews first before going.

I had a dealer change my air filter that I had put in just a couple months earlier. He didn't even ask me if I wanted one. It just showed up on the bill when I went to check out. That, along with $25 for "Misc. shop supplies". I told him I wasn't going to pay for the air filter so he put my old one back in. When I asked him about the "Misc. shop supplies" he said that was for shop rags they used to wipe their hands on when they got dirty. So they couldn't use a $3 roll of paper towels. They had to gouge me.

I remember when JiffyLube did this to me. I replaced the air filter the day before but the following day I was feeling lazy and decided to get my oil changed instead of doing it myself. When they showed me a dirty air filter I laughed to the point I howled.
I had that happen to me once, I actually saw the guy wet his index finger with dirty oil and then show me the "evidence" that there was an oil leak in the strut and it made the car unsafe, especially riding with my family. I responded "I don't care about them" and walked away.

Good advice as usual Scotty👍🏻
I like my small town mechanic. I thought my brakes were worn until he reminded me Pa dew makes them sound bad when they aren't.
When I bought my prior car, I wedged in the "lube for life" package for free into the contract. After like 3 years of free oil changes the mechanics started to go hard on these "inspections" and problems. They once brought out my air filter with leaves on it and they were like OMG you need to change this!!! I asked the price of a new filter and they were like oh $55. Told them to dust the filter off and put it back in... They were so silly. It's too bad that car got totaled.
EVERY thing is a scam these days. TRUST NO ONE
Happiness is an honest mechanic
Thank you for the good advice
Scotty is one of the last of the good ones left.
Scotty for President
this happened to a buddy of mine. he was told he needed to do a Big tune up of around 1500 dollars. told his buddy that checked things out (learning to fix things) and realizes most just needed lube and such. 150 bucks to do it all. within 4 years that mech. sold the place off. i agree people realized he sux sadly.
How can anyone not love Scotty? Unless your that type of mechanic he’s talking about I guess 🤷♂️🤣💯

A national treasure
I find it funny I am being recommended this after having my coil-overs replaced. All though I had a feeling a busted them after I hit a pot-hole at night, hit it hard enough to open my hood.
Scotty Kilmer, number 1!
Ten years ago, I Took my car to the same dealership for oil change service while my water pump was broken, they never said anything about it. Took it to a different dealership for the same reasons (oil change), and they told me the water pump needed to be replaced. However, a few months ago the latter dealership also told me recently that I needed new wiper blades, when I just changed them a few weeks prior.
One day a mechanic charged me 400$ for changing 4 spark plugs lol I left and done it for 60$ elsewhere
Midas in my area was *so bad* about this 15 years ago. This, and squirting antifreeze on the underside of the hood. ( I don't know if they still because _I stopped going to them!_ )

Hi I have Cadillac El dorado 1989 Strats not good. And I can not find strats assembly or even shock part. Can I buy similar length strats and simply weld in place? Engine transmission are good.
Reminds me of when I was charged for a new fuel filter and a few other things and I had to take the car back (because of poor workmanship) not even 2 weeks later. Apparently, in just 2 weeks, I somehow needed a new fuel filter again.
Give it up Scotty
If Scotty keeps exposing scams like this, he is gonna get “$uicided” by the Mechanics’ Union in the near future
Mine needed changing after going over some terrible roads. I’m up higher and smooth ride but when I drive out of my drive way the back end squeaks ?? Normal ? 2014 Hyundai Elantra.
Yeah a place told me I needed new struts on all 4 wheel. (Went in for 1 wheel collision repair). Just did the 1 wheel at another place and it's been fine so far.
The best auto insight
Oil? Mine had grease in them.
This happened to me at a quick lane … I went in for a oil change and he tries telling me I need this that and a third thing now I change my own oil and Google any questions bout my car to see if I need things taken care of
I have always tried to be an honest mechanic for the place I work. But we got a new manager and he is upset at me for not recommending enough stuff. His big complaint is I needed to start recommending things based on milage. He gave me a chart of how often to replace certain things. Among those are shocks and struts at 75,000 miles, even if they are perfectly fine. I have been recommending a lot of services I would have otherwise not recommended because I can't lose my job. I do somewhat sabotage his attempts to sell things by specifying that I am making a recommendation based on milage, so that when the customer reads it they question him more on it.
God bless you scotty 💯
Friend of a friend got new shocks. She went in to get an oil change from another place and they told her she needed new shocks. She told him she got new shocks recently. He got tongue tied and left and never bothered her.
Thank you Scotty. Live free or Die.
Check engine light came on, autozone claimed O2 sensor. Dealership changed 3 sensors, 3 spark plugs, water pump and added Lucas oil stabilizer. Picked up vehicle and check engine light came on same day, this time codes were P0420 and P0430, bank 1 and 2. I’m not educated enough to know how all this works. Could what he did cause those codes to show? I have a 2009 Buick Enclave CXL. Seems odd that those codes were not there just a few days prior
It's tough for the honest techs, that this is a situation. Also remember, we have the decades of experience and eyeballs for what other drivers do not. For the techs ripping people off, shame on you. For the drivers thinking all techs are trying to rip you off, shame on you.
I brought a used honda crv 2004 2.0 AT AWD . After buying and using it for some days i found that its head gasket was once overheated and was changed in addition to that the car ran on aftermarket CNG kit for 3000km . We removed the CNG kit and now the car is giving half it’s actual performance, please help me to regain its original performance, the car’s original 0-100 time was 10.5 seconds but now the car is giving 21 seconds for 0-100 . The agency told us to change throttle body and intake manifold and doing so helped us to improve the performance by only 20% . Odometer is 140000. The acceleration and pickup are not good , the car feels like taking up load while picking up , and while overtaking it struggles a lot. Please help me to regain the complete performance. I bought a couple new parts and took my car in to have them change the parts (preventive maintenence, nothing broken). I've had my car for awhile now and baby the absolute crap out of it. I had changed the oil a week before taking it in. The shop calls me the next day and says my car has almost zero oil in it and they took pictures of the low oil light on the dash and a picture of the dip stick. YOU COULD LITERALLY SEE THE OIL LEVEL (albeit faintly) AT THE FULL MARK ON THE DIP STICK IN THE PICTURE. The POS drained my oil, tried to get me to agree to have them search for the leak and still charged me $30 for new oil when I refused and called them out over the phone and in person in the shop. Never ever ever go to Driven Automotive in Meridian Idaho!!!!
Only you did that scotty... I have never need to do that...
I've replaced my struts and shocks if it rides like a log wagon. They won't always leak
I just replace the front struts on my 03 Celica 210,000 Mi on the original struts. If it was anything but a Toyota you'd be on your second or third set maybe more!
Well this is kind of weird situation. I had a couple situations in my short career when I lift the car up and shock absorber goes bad. You can even hear distinct noise the shock makes when it fails mid air.
@threestans9096
2 жыл бұрын
but then you say “i lifted it and it failed” a buncha pressure can keep things in place for quite a while. or at least that’s what i tell myself….kept a broken shock for a while cuz it broke at a decent place. didn’t mess with much as long as the car wasn’t lifted 😂 lasted long enough, before she ended up totaled.(unrelated to the shock)
Maybe film both the underside of the hood and the underneath of your vehicle
Went into dealer for oil change. I was then told I needed new brakes. I said "They're 1 week old. I Did them myself" . So they slightly loosened the nut on a power steering line and sent me on my way. Next day saw some fluid on the driveway. I had to pull the tire and wheel well liner to find the source of the leak. Tightened the line myself. I called my salesperson at the dealership and said what happened. I never went back.
Always record the actual odometer reading, NOT the trip odometer. I took a Ford to a Ford dealership for a stalling problem. After multiple visits they told me the mechanic drove the car for 20 miles with no problems. Evidently he 'accidentally' reset the trip odometer. How? Because I had recorded the actual odometer reading I was able to show the car had not been driven at all. 0.1 miles between my recorded mileage and the mileage they gave the car back to me, and tried to charge me.
Never thought of that
It can be normal for there to a small amount of oil residues since there's oil in the shock
@DeeDee-pw9pm

If there's oil on the outside of the shock, that means it's leaking. It's NOT normal for a shock to be leaking. And if you want to argue that you are right, then why are the original shocks on my 23 year old Suzuki bone dry?
Omg I've been wrenching for 22 years and I have never heard of this being done.

What if the seal goes on your way to that shop?

gotta love home wrenching, avoids all the bad in the world like them folks.
A chain tire store told me my 2012 4Runner needed all new shocks/springs...cause `it was time`...with 66K mikes?! vehicle rides & handles perfect...they wanted around $1200 for the job...all I wanted was the free rotation of the tires I purchased there...laughable how businesses try to scam customers. Will not buy tires there again...they will loose thousands in business...not my problem, their fault. Screw them.
I used that trick to my wife to upgade my suspension 😂😂😂

Thank good sir.
I seen a guy do that once. He was fired shortly after.
Why would you get new shocks or struts if your car isn’t riding like uncle bucks station wagon?
I know of a mechanic who would tell people they need muffler bearings...
I've had a few inicidents that will always make me look at mechanics like politicians or used car salesmen. I realize that 99 out of 100 mechanics could be good...but the 100th mechanic could actually kill you. I actually almost died once on the highway because of a mechanic. I can work on about 70% of things on a vehicle now, but when I do have to go to a mechanic, I will have tools on me and check stuff right in there face from now on.
