Except it would be extremely hard to correctly get all of this... I mean, the lights themselfs are a huge roadblock. Plus all that equipment would be super expencive.

DivideByZero actually they do leave a lot of that stuff on the cars. Talking about when you pass a old cop car sometimes you tend to slow down because you think you could possibly get a speeding ticket. They may not leave the lights on there but they always leave the spotlights and the computer chips in the car that allow the speed governor to be enabled. When I was younger my uncle was the town's electrician and we would play around with his Sirens all the time but we had to be super careful. So it's not hard to get them at all.

This is a very cool video that this department has done. It is important to know that this does not empower a wannabe to be a successful impersonator, it helps potential victims avoid this crime altogether. Most people are fooled because they have no idea what to look for, or what the laws are in their state in regards to a traffic stop and what the police are required to do. For example, Ohio has very specific laws and regards to what type of vehicle can pull you over. By that I mean, whether the vehicle is marked or unmarked etc. This police Lieutenant also makes a very good point, it is extremely unlikely that a vehicle would be pulling you over that only has one or two lights on it. Today's police vehicles are lit up like Christmas trees, and that should be your first clue. It is also very common for police impersonators to have 1 or 2 things on their belt, and very little on their uniform shirt. As a matter of fact most of them don't wear anything police oriented other than a gun, and rely on the fact that you have no idea what you were looking at, to intimidate you. Ex-police cars like the Crown Victoria are commonly used by these idiots. Beware of this, and do some research. I would bet that no unmarked vehicles are allowed to pull people over for traffic infractions in the city in which you live.

Call 911 and pull over in a well lit area like gas station, see how many lights in the car, a real police will may have some lights sometimes christmas tree lights, impersonator will only have like 1 or 2 lights since it's super expensive, ask for the officer's ID, a real one won't hesitate to give their ID. Edit: look for its equipment too, like bullbar, spotlights. If you have eagle eye try to see if it have any computer, antennas, radar, pager. A real one will have them. Don't forget that some police car have only 1 or 2 lighting so, you can't just say they're not cops. Follow the first sentence if you're not sure

Here in California any emergency vehicle (police, fire, or ambulance etc) must have at least one solid red light facing to the front. If the emergency vehicle behind you doesn't have that, it may be fake or from a small department that isn't aware of the specific wording of CVC 25252 and 21806. These departments or individuals are exposing themselves to liability as you aren't required by law to yield to them.

Maybe police fleet department bosses and their technicians should make more of an effort to remove all signs that the vehicle was a police vehicle. One step further would be that citizens should not be able to buy police equipment unless you are in law enforcement and provide ID that you have permission by your department to buy that particular equipment, uniform, badge etc.

This video has a few issues. In 48 States, unmarked police cars use regular civilian license plates, and no markings. They also tint the lights to hide them. Sometimes they even use regular non law enforcement models as undercover patrol cars. So the only way to tell if it's law enforcement is the uniform and their identifier.

Thought I saw a fake police officer earlier this week in my town (my coworker thinks they saw them as well). They pulled out of a dead-end street (that has quite a few houses on it) and turned on their lights right away. The lights were on the dashboard and were tiny. The car was blacked out and didn't look like any unmarked car I've ever seen. He was on the other side of the road (and I'd already passed him by the time I realized there were lights) so it didn't effect me.

I was told by a County Deputy, that if at night, only pull over in a well lit area at a fairly busy place. Traveling from one county to another, have areas that tend to be dark. He also told me that if I had a flat, slow down and keep going until I can pull into a well lit place. Told me that replacing a tire and or rim, is far better than pulling over into many of our dark areas. This Deputy. gave me his business card. Thank you for this video.

In my state volunteer fire fires use all blue lights on their p.o.v. The fire chiefs use all red lights and are aloud to use a siren on their p.o.v. sheriff departments Also use all read. And both municipal police and state police either marked or unmarked all use red and blue. Also p.a. state constables are not allowed to use any lights or sirens on their p.o.v. because it's not registered as an emergency vehicle but due put decals on their cars making them look like police. Two from my county were arrested last week for outfitting their retired police charger with a like bar and lied about them being a part of a search and rescue group they made up.

First I’d like to say, there is a difference between an unmarked and undercover car. An unmarked car isn’t supposed to be indistinguishable from a regular car. It’s just so at a glance it dosent catch your eye the same way a marked car does. An under cover car could be anything from your moms soccer van to some old beat up Chevy Malibu

The entire Connecticut State Police fleet (is unmarked) has no visible markings or badging, striping or lettering indicating a police vehicle. In addition there are no longer roof mounted light bars mounted on the roof. The state is asking for police impersonators while this largely benefits the troopers who can use the vehicle, fuel supplied, unrestricted off duty.

And when try to explain to the officer the rule and officer pulls out DOT rule book but REFUSES to turn the page to where it says exempt! But instead officer says " are you telling me the law?" You reply yes and he tickets you. But when shown to the magistrate and ticket gets dismissed! Wonder? Who knows the law?

It would make for more approachable law enforcement personnel, therefore enhancing that agency-community relationship. Seriously is it really that hard? NO. This video perfectly illustrates what seems to be genuinely sincere and ethical "cops" who have the public's interest at heart. Or so it seems. I'm beginning to see that nothing is as it seems.. I am aware. You should also be aware that a judge or arbitrator isn’t required to wear a black robe either. Not even in the US Supreme Court. But most choose to because of tradition and the image of authority it conveys. That’s not to say that all do, and I actually know of a few who wear regular business suits on the bench. Wait, were they in an unmarked style fake or in a marked fake. How brazen would they be to have a "marked" fake. Have to say that just about all of the stuff on your car could be bought online. Even the badge on your uniform.

Great tips. However you never know how far an individual will go to make thier vehicle look authentic. So, always, ALWAYS, call 911 and inform them of vehicle and alleged officer with location if possible. They should be able to verify if the officer/unit is the real deal.

In our city only marked patrol cars will make traffic stops. If an unmarked car needs to stop someone they will call for a marked unit to assist.

While I find it good giving helpful tips for spotting a impersonator, there are some issues; the most identifiable way would be the municipal plate. The uniform, set. The badge/id, set. The car, heck be a railroad police officer, set. The lights, well if your lucky with that railroad police fakory, you might get lucky fully suited up if not then plenty of lights off the internet, set. That municipal plate is the only thing that exactly says "we are the police" and Michigan doesn't require a front-facing plate so you can't tell.

I was pulled over last Wednesday (my birthday) the fake police officer gave me a citation for trafficking, possession of marijuana, and intent to distribute. He called my parents. My parents showed up and when it was time to leave, I asked for my citation. He said I couldn’t keep it. I said “your fake, I’m calling the cops on you” the impersonator immediately called for back up and his fake boss came. I went to his car and flamed him saying that he needed to try harder to scam people. Meanwhile my dad is yelling at me for disrespecting a cop. My dad didn’t know he was fake until I made the fake cop leave. Ya I’m grounded af though for Doja.

With LED tech becoming cheaper and more available, the impersonators are going to start incorporating more realistic homebrew systems, so the cheesy lighting that they were using is going to become dated. I can see cars of the future having a type of NFC chip installed in the trunks, and the companion apparatus being installed on the front bumper of police cars, so they can be verified instantly during a traffic stop. Anyway, we got to think ahead of these unstable individual.

how to spot a police imposter. 1) know what types of vehicles your police department uses. 2) officers have to tell you the reason for the stop before you hand over your license or anything else. they will tell you that they don't but its part of the training that they say "hi/hello etc. etc. I am __________ with the __________ police department, the reason why I stopped you is for _____________". 3) no officer will ever pull you over and step out of the vehicle wearing plain clothes. why? because plain close officers are either undercover, off duty, a detective or in the big cities a Lt or higher rank. all of these are no longer traffic officers and do not pull people over. now different areas do different things but all pretty much follow these three so its a good way to tell if you are dealing with an imposter. and you also do NOT have to pull over immediately you can go to where you feel safe if need be like into the next gas station of well lit area. you cant go 20+ miles but you can go a mile or two before pulling over if you don't feel safe. and if it is an officer, just tell them that. the reason why I didn't stop is because I didn't feel it was safe for you or me where you were trying to pull me over.
