I've had my SM58 for 32 years now and I've never stopped using it as it never breaks (and when I played with the Cramps a couple nights Lux used it... And it still didn't break. It's a must have mic for any metal or rock based music and I'm seeing a lot of rappers using them now as well.

It is hard to tell. Shure should start stamping serial numbers on their microphones so you could run a check to see if it is real.

Is it normal for mic to have made in Mexico at the bottom. It's got a round smooth bottom, its 1 piece, silver connectors but has made in Mexico at the bottom

One more thing you didn't realize Sr, The Place where the XLR cable sits there's an "hole" for the Conector of the XLR Cable I mean there a little space cured were the Holder Button of the XLR Cable Goes, on the Original this "hole" it's Round and on the Fakes it's Absolutely Square!

Side note about Sweetwater: if you live around Fort Wayne Indiana, you might not realize that Sweetwater is nationally known as one of the best online places to buy from. Great service, easy to work with a real person, etc.

I got had by a fake one once. The one I got sounded like a $5 junk mic.

These are dynamic mics, you never use phantom power on them unless necessary on your preamp. You only use phantom power on a condenser mic. And _NEVER_ on a ribbon mic, as it can destroy it. But thanks for the video. 🤘

On smaller mixers phantom can only be turned on all XLR inputs or none, and you may be using a mixture of condenser and dynamic mics. A dynamic will not see the phantom power, unless something is wired wrong. It is my understanding that some fake 58's make a hum under phantom power. It was a test to see if I herd a hum. As far as ribbon microphones go, I have never had one, but upon doing some research on the matter only some vintage ribbon microphones would be damaged. Modern microphones would have no issues having phantom power turned on

@@stevehill1802 I can agree that a dynamic mic can go unaffected, but I am not sure even modern ribbon mics could handle +48v. Thanks for the reply, I will look into that, and whom is saying it. My guess is that most people that even know what a ribbon mic is would want an older one.

@@ClearAdventure Phantom powering applies a positive voltage to pins 2 and 3 in the mic, and the ground of the phantom supply is connected to pin 1. In a condenser mic, pins 2 and 3 are wired to the circuitry inside the mic. Phantom current entering pins 2 and 3 goes through the mic circuit, then exits out pin 1 and returns to the supply ground. In a dynamic mic or ribbon mic, pins 2 and 3 are wired to the mic’s voice coil or ribbon. Normally, the coil or ribbon is floating from the pin 1 ground. So the circuit loop to and from the phantom supply is incomplete. No current can flow through the mic’s voice coil or ribbon if you apply phantom power. Result: no damage, unless something is wired wrong.

@@stevehill1802 Not completely true, brother. Like I said, most older ribbon mics (the pricey ones from the 60's) did not have the same common circuitry that we have now. I first learned about this around 25 years ago when I was singing at Vintage Recording Studio in Phoenix, AZ. I was lucky enough to sing on the actual mic that Stevie Nicks, the Beach Boys, etc used. When I was in the control room I asked the engineer why the preamp had not only a 48v phantom power button, but also a "Ribbon" button, and that is when he explained it to me. You can see a power amp with a ribbon button in this video fallowing. @@stevehill1802 Additionally, whenever switching condenser mics, as you know we have the phantom power off when we plug the mic in, and off before we unplug it, but also the power takes about 1 minute to dissipate, so make sure to count to at least a minute before plugging in a different condenser mic after turning off the phantom power. 👍

Fake is louder but identical in character.

Your lisp is more prominent on the fake SM58. Idk if that matters to you but that is my observation

Sound-wise, I could barely tell, if at all. Yeah I’d pay $20 for. Fake too 😂😂😂

The EQ should fix any parameter diffrences between the 2 if they are already that close. Yep get a cheap knock off for a knock around mic makes sense. Even a pub gig whos going to notice after a few drinks. Your not trying to impress sound engineers😂😂😂

Report the matter to Shure.. They want to know.

I wouldn't be using a SM58 for recording (Phantom Power)...I would be using a Condenser MIC

@@DEGUIDER didn’t order online, got it from someone who obviously bought in bulk. Asked if he was selling he said yes so I got 2. I knew it was fake, but I was looking for a cheap mic anyway, so I didn’t care how well it worked, and turned out to be very ok. Didn’t even ask if he had a store.

This is what we get for sending all our manufacturing over to China. Maybe that wasn't such a bright move.

Hi Steve, could you clarify which microphone is real and which one is fake @ 1:39? Is the Fake still on the left? And could you talk a little more about the metal screen under the element at 1:47; what exactly is "the element"? Maybe you could post a closer picture of what you are referring to? The whole idea of making this video is to show that almost can not tell if you have a fake or not. I sent the fake I had back to the seller for a refund. You literally have to sit a genuine 58 next to the mic in question, and then it's hard to tell.
