I gotta agree with Sissco Every competitor already knows the moves from muscle memory. The wall is always exactly the same, from the precise placement of the holds to their texture , and even the texture of the wall. When someone comes with a move to shave off time, like Reza, the world record holder, who literally skips the second hold, everyone copies the guy. It's literally like watching speedrunners but it lasts 6 seconds. It's still impressive to watch someone climb a 50 foot wall in a matter of seconds, but I feel it's way less interesting to watch than the other disciplines. Bouldering is great because each problem is unique and people can use their creativity to solve the problem in different ways depending on their physical ability. The people who come up with the problems most of the times already have a sequence of moves they want the climber to be forced to take, but competitors often try to "break" that sequence of move and come up with their own.

As it's the first time climbing is in the Olympics, they were only allotted one set of medals. In Paris, they will have two sets of medals, and will have one speed event and one combined lead / bouldering event. Hopefully, we will eventually have four or even five sets of medals (individual events, individual combined and maybe a team event).

  • @MagicTimeTravel

It wouldn't be so bad if they had two *real* types of climbing. But "Speed climbing" is not a thing. Nobody in the climbing community does it. Nobody wants to train for it because it's actually bad for your real climbing strengths.

Oh It's totally unfair. Some climbers emphasize 2 disciplines, but a majority specialize in 1. Climbers are excited that it's in the Olympics, but the format for this years Olympics is so stupid.
